.SYNOPSIS...

Mainly dry weather is in store for the region today, especially
south of the Massachusetts turnpike where temps will be mild. A
strong cold front will then cross the region Tuesday with some
rain, which will likely end as a brief period of snow/ice with
rapidly falling temperatures. Near record cold along with windy
conditions follow Tuesday night and Wednesday as wind chills
drop into the single digits. Temperatures will remain well below
normal on Thursday, but with much less wind. A brief moderation
likely occurs by Friday, but another cold front should allow
cold weather to return by Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

10 PM Update...

W-SW winds have become light/variable or calm away from the
coast, and about 5-10 kt along the shoreline. Lower clouds have
pushed in across most of NE, central and W Mass at 03Z as seen
on latest observations and on GOES-East satellite imagery. These
clouds will continue to push E through the remainder of the
night.

Noting light rain across central/W NY state except some -SN
across far N NY state from about KMSS-KART. Generally light
radar reflectivities seen on latest NE regional 88D radar
imagery as it shifts E. Still rather dry in the lower levels
across the region, with dewpoint depressions from 5-10 degrees
and a bit higher across E coastal areas at 03Z. Should see these
lower overnight especially across the E slopes of the Berkshires
into the western CT valley after midnight as deeper moisture
approaches.

Looks like timing of the onset of precip across the E slopes
close to previous forecast. Also, still have mixed precip at the
onset as well, as temps look to linger in the lower 30s there
with light/variable winds.

Have updated to incorporate near term conditions into the
overnight forecast.

Previous Discussion...

Expect temperatures return to near normal levels as clouds
continue to lower/thicken. Low risk for some light
precipitation late tonight towards the east slopes of the
Berkshires. With temperatures close to freezing, cannot dismiss
the possibility of some light snow or freezing rain.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...

Still anticipating low pressure to develop along an approaching
front. This low pressure should approach southern New England
later Monday. Increasing risk for showers associated more with
the presence of a front than this low pressure, which should be
more of a factor Monday night. Expecting temperatures to rise
above freezing rather quickly Monday morning, ending the threat
of wintry precipitation by mid morning. Some wet snow may linger
into late morning at elevations at or above 1000 ft.

A concern will be the light north to northeast flow, which may
keep temperatures lower for longer. This will need to be
monitored closely over the next day or so.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...

Highlights...

Details...

Tuesday night...

Any lingering snow across the southeast New England coast will
quickly come to an end early Tue evening.  A highly anomalous
airmass for the first half of November will be ushered in on strong
northwest wind gusts between 25 and 40 mph.  Low temps will bottom
out well down into the teens to lower 20s. Record lows might be
broken at a few of our sites. More importantly, the strong
winds will result in wind chills dropping to between 5 below and
10 above by daybreak Wednesday.

Wednesday...

Record cold with windy weather continues across the region Wed.
Despite plenty of sunshine, afternoon highs should only recover
into the middle to upper 20s across the high terrain and the
lower 30s elsewhere. New record low maximum temperatures are
pretty much a lock to be set in BOS, PVD, and ORH. BDL will have
a good shot too.

Wednesday night...

Large high pressure builds in from the west resulting in mainly
clear skies and light winds.  This will result in a good night of
radiational cooling.  Overnight lows should bottom out between 10 and
15 above in many outlying areas with even some high single digits
possible.  The urban centers should see low temps by daybreak mainly
in the upper teens to lower 20s.

Thursday...

High pressure slowly moves east of our region on Thu.  After a very
cold start, afternoon high temps will recover into the upper 30s and
lower 40s across much of the region.  While these temperatures are
still well below normal for this time of year, much less wind will
make it more comfortable especially during the afternoon.

We may have to watch for a few brief rain/snow showers late Thu or
Thu night in the warm advection pattern.  Any precipitation though
should be rather light and short-lived.

Friday and Saturday...

Temperatures rebound nicely on Fri with southwest flow out ahead of
a cold front. Highs probably will top out in the upper 40s to
the lower 50s. This will be short-lived through as another
strong cold front crosses the region late Fri or Fri night. Not
much moisture associated with this front, so probably comes
through mainly dry. However, it will bring a return to
unseasonably cold temps Sat with highs mainly in the 30s to near
40.

Sunday and Monday...

High uncertainty by next Sun and Mon.   We will have to watch if an
offshore storm brings any precipitation late Sun and/or Mon.  There
is lots of spread though in the ensembles, so it remains uncertain
if we will be impacted or the system slides harmlessly out to sea.

.AVIATION /08Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Tuesday/...High confidence through early
tonight, then moderate confidence.

Overnight...VFR for most areas. MVFR CIGS and MVFR to local IFR
VSBYS around or after 09Z across NW MA in patchy -RASN. Light
W-SW winds less than 10 kt, except up to 10-15 kt across outer
Cape Cod and the islands through 05Z.

Monday...VFR most areas. MVFR to local IFR CIGS across central
and W MA, especially across higher terrain. Patchy mixed precip
across north central/NW MA through around 11/14Z, then chance
of light RA from midday through the afternoon along the Route 2
area of northern MA with areas of MVFR CIGS/VSBYS. Front draped
across southern New England. Generally light N/NE winds,
becoming light E/SE towards the south coast.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Outlook /Tuesday Night through Friday/...

Tuesday Night through Wednesday: VFR. Windy with gusts up to
35 kt.

Wednesday Night: VFR. Breezy.

Thursday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible.

Thursday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Breezy.

.MARINE...

Short Term /through Tuesday/...High confidence.

Allowed the Small Craft Advisories on the eastern waters to
expire at 03Z as wind gusts have diminished and seas have
lowered. W-SW winds up to around 15 kt across the outer waters
through around 07Z or so, then will diminish. Seas 4 ft or
less.

Relatively light winds continue through Monday with a front
draped across the waters. Light N/NE winds generally north of
this boundary, with light E/SE winds to the south.

Outlook /Tuesday Night through Friday/...

Tuesday Night: High risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
40 kt. Rough seas up to 11 ft.

Wednesday: High risk for gale force winds with gusts up to 40
kt. Areas of rough seas.

Wednesday Night: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds
with gusts up to 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching 5 ft.

Thursday: Winds less than 25 kt. Seas locally approaching 5 ft.
Slight chance of rain showers.
