.SYNOPSIS...

Low pressure developing along a strong cold front will result in
rain overspreading the region this afternoon into early this
evening. The rain may end as a brief period of snow across the
interior tonight with very minor accumulations possible in the
high terrain. Windy and much colder conditions follow Friday
with well below normal temperatures persisting into Saturday,
but with much less wind. A return to milder and more seasonable
temperatures occurs on Sunday. Another strong cold front will
cross the region early next week with the potential for some
rain and/or early season snow in the Monday night to early
Wednesday time frame. Near record cold will follow by the middle
of next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

1 AM Update...

Skies remain clear across the region, except for some patchy mid
level clouds crossing portions of NW Mass from time to time as
seen on GOES-East Nighttime Microphysics satellite imagery and
observations. With light/variable or calm winds thanks to high
pres cresting across the region, temps have fallen to at or
below freezing away from most locations away from the coast.
Noting a temp of 32 degrees at KMVY, however, with clear skies
and calm winds there. Elsewhere along the shore, temps were in
the mid-upper 30s, except in the 40s on the outer Cape,
Nantucket and Block Island.

Should see temps begin to level out along the coast as winds
shift to S-SW and gradually increase. Readings will continue to
slowly fall further inland, though may also start to level out
well inland as clouds increase.

Previous Discussion...

SKC across SNE with light winds as high pres builds south of
New Eng. Temps are falling quickly under ideal radiational
cooling conditions. Given this setup, derived min temps tonight
from the coldest guidance. This yields lows in the 20s for most
of the suburbs with 30s in the urban areas including Cape Cod
and the Islands.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...

Today...

Good model agreement on dry weather lingering thru the morning
hours across the region. Could be some dim sunshine through a
mid deck of clouds early, otherwise clouds will be on the
increase with rain overspreading the region from west to east
during the afternoon. Rain likely reaches the Boston to
Providence corridor close to sunset.

As the cold front approaches from the west SSW winds will be on
the increase with model soundings supporting gusts up to 20-30
mph, strongest along the coast including Cape Cod and Islands as
well as the high terrain. This low level jet will also result
in increasing thermal advection with temps climbing into the mid
and upper 50s during the afternoon, upper 40s high terrain. So
seasonably mild tomorrow.

Tonight...

Very progressive trough with window of precip from about
20z/21z western MA/CT then exiting Cape Cod and the Islands by
around 09z Friday. Given the progressive nature the trough is
less amplified than previously thought and thus frontal wave is
weaker and slower to develop. Thus arrival of cold air is
delayed and by the time it arrives the bulk of the qpf is
exiting the area.

Thus looking at a mainly rain event with rain mixing with and
changing to snow during the evening hours, first across the
Berkshires then the Worcester Hills and possibly ending briefly
as light snow elsewhere before ending 1 am to 4 am. Temps are
very marginal and given the lack of precip intensity any minor
snow accumulations (a coating to an inch) should be confined to
the higher elevations and non paved surfaces.

Clearing conditions will overspread the region before sunrise
Friday across most of the area, the exception may be Cape Cod
and the Islands where clouds linger. Subfreezing temps likely
before sunrise across much of northern CT/central-western MA
into northwest RI but a gusty NW wind will be accompanied by low
level dry air overspreading the region which should preclude
residual ground moisture from freezing. Thus not expecting any
travel/road issues Fri morning.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Highlights...

* Near record low temps Fri night in the teens to middle 20s

* Dry and still unseasonably chilly Sat, but with rather light winds

* Mainly dry Sun with temps moderating to seasonable levels

* Rain and/or snow possible sometime in the Mon night to early Wed
  period depending on the timing of a cold front and surface waves

* Near record cold temperatures follow by the middle of next week

Details...

Friday night...

It still will be quite breezy during the evening, but should see
diminishing winds overnight especially in the low-lying locations.
This in response to high pressure building in from the west.  Given
the anomalous airmass in place, this will set the stage for near
record low temperatures.  We expect overnight low temps to bottom
out in the teens to middle 20s in most locations.

Saturday...

High pressure will be centered just south of our region.  Plenty of
sunshine is expected, but it will remain unseasonably cold across
the region.  High temperatures will only recover into the lower 40s
in most locations, which is about 10 degrees below normal.  It will
feel more comfortable compared to Fri given much less wind.

Saturday night and Sunday...

Light winds and just some scattered high clouds Sat evening will
allow temps to quickly fall back into the 20s and lower 30s after
sunset in many locations. However, as the high pressure system moves
off the coast a southwest LLJ will develop.  Many of the low-lying
areas may remain below freezing overnight, but areas along the
southeast New England coast should see temps rise late Sat night.

We can not rule out of few brief spot showers during the early to
mid morning hours across the Cape/Islands in the warm air advection
pattern.  Otherwise, generally dry and milder temperatures to close
out the weekend on Sun.  High should recover back into the lower to
middle 50s in many locations and there will be a bit of a southwest
breeze.

Monday through Wednesday...

A highly anomalous and complex weather forecast during this time
frame. Very strong upper level ridging into Alaska coupled with
potent shortwave energy which will carve out a deep east coast
trough.  In fact, the GEFS ensemble situational awareness table
shows many height/temperature fields outside the models forecasted
climatology.

With all that being said, still high uncertainty on how exactly
things will evolve.  Timing/strength of northern stream shortwave
energy and where a strong cold front is in respect to a couple waves
of low pressure that may ride along it.  We may be relatively mild
Mon and perhaps into part of Tue depending on when the cold front
crosses the region followed by a return to well below normal temps.
In addition, a wave or two of low pressure working along the frontal
boundary will likely result in some rain and/or early season snow.
Timing looks to be somewhere in the Mon night to early Wed time
frame. Ptype will depend on where the waves of low pressure travel
with the respect to the front. While certainly not set in stone the
potential exists for some early season snowfall.  This will depend
on whether or not a wave of low pressure rides along the front when
it is south of our latitude. While interior southern New England
would have the best shot, the coastal plain could be impacted too.

In a nutshell, it remains uncertain if we will see any snow during
the Mon night into early Wed time frame but this anomalous pattern
certainly bears watching.  What appears to be a lock is the
unseasonably cold air to work into the region by the middle of next
week.  Based on various parameters from the ensembles, near record
low temperatures are expected.

from NW-SE in -RA and patchy fog reaching S coastal areas
around 21Z. IFR conditions after 21Z across E slopes of the
Berkshires. SW winds 10-15 kt. Gusts to around 20 kt across
central/E Mass/RI/NE CT during the afternoon.

Tonight...

MVFR-IFR conditions in -RA and patchy fog, mixing with or
changing to -SN across central/W areas from 01Z-06Z. Conditions
improve to VFR from W-E after 06Z, except -RA lingers through
12Z across Cape Cod and KACK. Less than 1 inch snow accumulation
across N central to E slopes of Berkshires. Winds shift to W-NW
up to 10-15 kt with gusts to 20-25 kt, highest across E coast
and Cape Cod terminals after midnight.

Friday...

Leftover -SHRA across Cape Cod/Nantucket with local MVFR CIGS
through 13Z, otherwise VFR/dry conditions. NW winds gusting to
25-35 kt, highest across outer Cape Cod and Nantucket.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Some uncertainty on
exact timing of details Thu night.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Some uncertainty on
