.SYNOPSIS...
Dry and seasonable weather today but windy conditions, which
will diminish on Wednesday. Low pressure passes north of the
region, with its associated cold front bringing showers and
isolated thunderstorms late Thursday into Friday morning.
Another brief dry period late this week, then fast moving
systems may bring scattered showers at times during the holiday
weekend. Mild temperatures may return by Memorial Day.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

720 AM Update...

GOES-East sunrise visible satellite imagery showing area of
wave clouds working S-SE across the interior, though tending to
dissipate as they approach the coastal plain. These clouds
extend westward into eastern and central NY state and E PA. Will
remain across most of the region as the mid level cold pool over
southern Quebec will push southward through the day.

NW wind gusts up to 20-25 kt early this morning will continue
to increase with excellent mixing across the region.

Near term forecast on track. Have updated to bring conditions
current.

Previous Discussion...

Robust mid level low diving SE from Quebec moves across Maine
this afternoon. Associated cold pool will remain well to the
north so dry conditions expected with just some diurnal cu
developing. The main issue for today is the windy conditions
that will develop today. Steep low level lapse rates, near dry
adiabatic, will promote deep boundary layer mixing. Soundings
support gusts to 30-40 mph, strongest over higher terrain in MA
which will likely peak during the late afternoon. Seasonable
temps in the upper 60s to near 70, cooler higher terrain, with
very dry airmass as dewpoints fall into the 30s.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Surface high builds over the Great Lakes tonight before moving
into New Eng on Wed. Very dry airmass will result in clear skies
through Wed. While winds will diminish tonight, enough gradient
to keep winds from becoming light/calm and gusty winds will
persist along the immediate coast, especially Cape/Islands. This
will limit radiational cooling but still a cool night tonight
with lows in the 40s. Some upper 30s possible in some of the
sheltered valleys in western MA. Temps will recover into the
mid 60s to lower 70s Wed, with much less wind. Developing sea
breezes will keep temps a bit cooler along the immediate coast.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...

* Fast steering flow will bring scattered showers from time to
  time over the holiday weekend

Details...

Wednesday night...

Dry conditions continue Wednesday night as high pressure moves
across the region. Light/variable winds shift to S-SW overnight
as the ridge moves offshore. Expect overnight lows in the mid
40s to around 50, which is close to seasonal levels for late
May.

Thursday and Friday...

After a brief H5 ridge crosses Quebec into the northeast, it
breaks down during Thursday. Another short wave in the fast,
nearly zonal mid level steering flow aloft, will push across
the region late Thursday. Noting total totals around 50 and LIs
around zero to -1, so could see some isolated thunderstorms
that may develop as the surface cold front approaches mainly
after midnight Thursday night into Friday morning. A thin PWAT
plume up to 1.5 inches may also bring locally moderate to heavy
rainfall at times especially across central and eastern areas.
Center of the low passes across northern New England to the St.
Lawrence valley, so should see mainly S-SW winds ahead of the
front. Overnight lows will run in the lower-mid 50s.

Precip should taper off across N CT by around daybreak Friday
as winds shift to W, then should improve by around midday or so
across the remainder of the region. Expect highs in the lower
60s along the immediate E coast as winds veer to NE during the
day, ranging to the lower 70s across N central/NE CT.

Friday night through Monday...

High amplitude ridge crosses the northeast Friday night while
another H5 short wave sets up to push SE across the Great Lakes
by Sat morning. Questionable timing on how quickly this system
approaches on Saturday, but does look like scattered showers
will push across during the day as another cold front
approaches. The front may briefly stall across the region Sat
night as the zonal steering flow holds in place. Most of the
energy may push offshore by Sun morning, so could see a brief
dry and mild period during the holiday weekend. Highs Sunday may
reach the lower-mid 70s across most locations.

Quite a bit of uncertainty whether yet another short wave moves
along in the fast steering flow that could bring another round
of showers for Memorial Day.
