.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure moving into the Great Lakes will bring bands of
heavy rain showers and a few embedded thunderstorms late tonight
into early Monday, with a second area of showers and isolated
thunderstorms possible Monday afternoon. This will be followed
by dry but windy conditions Monday night into Tuesday, with a
return to more seasonable temperatures. A warm front slowly
approaches late Wednesday into Thursday, which may bring a few
showers. As a low pressure stalls west of the region late this
week, there is the potential for some heavy rain by Friday
and/or Saturday along with milder temperatures.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 10 AM MONDAY MORNING/...

***Heavy showers and a few embedded thunderstorms cross the
 region from west to east between 5 and 10 am Mon morning***

1010 pm update...

Scattered showers will persist into the overnight hours in the
broad warm advection pattern. We also did go ahead and issue a
Dense Fog Advisory along the south coast, Cape and Islands as
high dewpoint air streams over the relatively cold ocean.
Temperatures should generally be in the upper 50s and lower 60s
away from the marine influence along the coast. The exception
will be across far northeast MA where a backdoor cold front may
result in temps in the 40s to around 50.

The main action still on schedule to occur between 5 and 10 am
Monday morning. This on the nose of a modest low level jet
ahead of a pre- frontal trough. This combined with a Pwat plume
of 3+ standard deviations above normal and several hundred J/KG
of MU Cape will set the stage for a cluster of heavy showers and
a few embedded t-storms. Brief nuisance poor drainage street
flooding and a few embedded t-storms are the main concern.
Fortunately, this LLJ and moisture axis is transient so main
thrust of the activity will be exiting the southeast New
England coast by late morning.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Monday...

Showers and possible isolated thunderstorms expected to move
offshore by mid morning, mainly due to the departure of the
deeper moisture plume. However, we will still need to contend
with a potent mid level shortwave rotating around the base of
the longwave trough during the afternoon and evening. Mid level
lapse rates are still right around moist adiabatic, but the low
level laps rates should be slightly steeper. Expecting at least
another round of showers, and possible a few more
thunderstorms, too.

While the strongest low level jet should be offshore Monday
morning, still thinking we are at risk for strong west to
northwest wind gusts as the colder air arrives. 925 mb winds are
still thought to be 30-40 kt. Unlike the early morning, these
winds are more likely to transfer to the ground as any surface-
based inversion should be overcome by afternoon.

Timing of temperatures remain complicated, and tied directly to
the passage of a warm front Monday morning. Much of the high
resolution guidance still push this boundary north of the Mass
Pike by 9-10 AM. Would not be surprised to see a slightly slower
timing. Highs should reach mid/upper 60s away from the coasts
and higher terrain, especially once some sunshine breaks out.

Decent cooling late in the day into Monday night behind a cold
front. A surge of strong post-frontal W/NW wind gusts 30-40 mph
expected late Mon with the strong cold advection, but the
strongest wind gusts will occur Monday night.

Monday night into Tuesday...

Drier weather develops during this time, but there could be some
lingering showers along and north of the Mass Pike Monday
evening. Winds remain gusty, although this time from the W to
NW. A Wind Advisory continues for portions of Massachusetts late
Monday into Monday night. Near to slightly above normal
temperatures expected.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...

Details...

Tuesday night and Wednesday...

N-S oriented high pressure ridge from central Quebec to the mid Atlc
in place Tue night while warm front develops S and W of the region.
A majority of the 12Z model suite keeps mainly dry conditions in
place across the region through Wednesday, though clouds will begin
to lift NE across W Mass and N central CT Wed afternoon.

Will see leftover wind gusts up to 25 kt Tuesday evening, but they
should diminish rather quickly, then will shift to E-SE albeit light
on Wednesday. Temps will fall back to the upper 30s to lower 40s
overnight. Readings recover to the 50s during Wed, mildest across
the lower CT valley and interior E Mass, with a few spots possibly
touching 60.

Wednesday night through Thursday night...

The high will shift slowly E off the coast Wed night, allowing winds
to shift to S. However, looks like the warm front will be slow to
push NE, though clouds will continue to increase. Could see some
scattered showers move into W Mass/N central CT overnight. Looks
like another cool night with lows in the mid 30s across the E slopes
of the Berkshires to the lower 40s along the immediate coast and
lower CT valley.

Big question for Thursday will be the timing of the leading edge of
precip and the warm front as it slowly pushes toward the region.
Ridging across the Gulf of Maine at the surface and aloft. Should
see a chance for showers increase from W-E especially during the
afternoon and continue through Thursday night. It will remain chilly
as the warm front remains S and W of the region, with highs Thursday
only in the 50-55 degree range.

Friday through Sunday...

Strong H5 cutoff low meanders across the northern Plains into the
western Great Lakes on Friday, with its strong surface low also
slowly moving N-NE. This system will be very slow with its NE
progression through the upcoming weekend. Excellent moisture feed up
the eastern seaboard thanks to the deep trough to the W with
responding ridge crossing eastern New England to the Maritimes.

With this highly amplified, slow moving pattern in place, will
eventually see deep tropical moisture plume push up the coast,
reaching the region Fri night and continuing through Saturday night.
Noting the 12Z GEFS ensemble PWAT plume on the order of 3-4 SD above
normal for mid to late April, especially from 06Z to 18Z Saturday.
Current QPF forecast suggests upwards to 1-2 inches of rainfall
during the Fri to late Sat timeframe, highest across central and
western areas.

12Z models are suggesting that the warm front will eventually pass
across the region sometime Friday, though have lower than average
confidence with this timing. Could see highs both Friday and
Saturday running 5 to as high as 10 degrees above seasonal normals.

May see some elevated instability move across the region late Friday
into Saturday, so have a slight chance for thunder mentioned across
central and western areas.

Precip may start to taper off late Sat night or Sun across N CT into
RI, but timing is very much in question considering the high
amplitude steering pattern in place. Carried CHC POPs for northern
and eastern areas.

afternoon. Line of SHRA/TSRA moving across E and SE New Eng

afternoon. A period of gusty S winds to 25-35 kt possible along
the coastal plain Mon morning, then increasing W-NW winds with

Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Tuesday/...High confidence.

Expecting another night of poor visibility on the south coastal
waters. South winds increase, and should reach Small Craft
Advisory levels after midnight on the southern coastal waters.
It will take bit longer to get that strong on the coastal waters
east of MA. A few 35 kt gusts possible in any thunderstorms
which develop over the waters.

A wind shift to W/NW late Mon/Mon evening with widespread gale
force gusts likely. Poor vsbys through Mon over south coastal
waters in areas of dense fog. Showers and isolated t-storms
tonight into Mon morning.

Gale force gusts expected to continue through Mon night, before
diminishing through Tue. Gale Watches may be upgraded to Gale
Warnings with later forecasts.

Rough seas develop on the exposed waters tonight into Monday,
and continue through Tuesday.

Wednesday: Winds less than 25 kt. Seas locally approaching
5 ft.

Thursday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up
to 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching 5 ft. Slight chance of rain
showers.

Thursday Night: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds
with gusts up to 25 kt. Seas up to 5 ft. Chance of rain
showers.

Friday: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts
up to 30 kt. Areas of rough seas. Chance of rain showers.

.HYDROLOGY...
**Minor flooding is possible on the lower Connecticut River,
 including the MA and CT sections, early this week**

Rainfall events tonight into Monday, will bring soaking
rainfall to New England. One to two plus inches of rainfall is
locally possible through Monday.

Warm temperatures over northern New England (NH/VT) will also
result in substantial snowmelt. Due to the combination of
rainfall and snowmelt, strong rises are expected on the lower
Connecticut River. There is a risk early next week for minor
flooding along the Connecticut River in MA and CT. River Flood
Watches have been posted for the most vulnerable locations.

Due to less snowpack in the headwaters of the Merrimack River,
river flooding is not expected on the lower Merrimack River in
MA at this time.
