.SYNOPSIS...
Scattered showers, breezy and rather mild today ahead of a cold
front. Locally heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms possible
near the south coast late today and this evening as the front
moves through. Behind this front, windy and cooler conditions
Saturday, then colder Sunday into the middle of next week as
high pressure builds into the region.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

945 am update...

Expecting scattered to isolated showers over SNE during the
next few hours. There will be an increase in shower and isolated
t-storm potential as the afternoon wears on, especially along
far southeastern New England. While there is a low level
inversion, moderate mid level lapse rates could allow for a few
more rumbles of thunder. TSRA was noted earlier this AM at ORE
ASOS and also N into S NH (EEN and AFN).

Low level inversion limits full mixing of a strong LLJ to the
surface. However it will still be breezy/windy. Wind gusts
25-35 mph possible thru the day, best potential along the
interior higher terrain, and the coastal plain inclusive of
eastern MA and RI.

Made minor adjustments to forecast based on latest trends. Forecast
looks on track. Quite mild this morning with 9 am temps in the
mid 40s and 50s. Expecting highs in the 50s to low 60s.

Early Morning Discussion...

Cold front moves slowly east across New York
state today and sweeps across SNE tonight. Anomalous PWAT plume
will be over the region this morning then shift to the south
coast this afternoon and evening as mid level drying moves into
the western New Eng. Scattered showers are expected to move into
SNE this morning within this deep moisture plume, but given
main shortwave energy remains well to the west today with weak
forcing for ascent a washout is not expected today.

During the afternoon, the main focus for showers will shift to
near the south coast close to the deep moisture and low level
jet axis, with mainly dry conditions in western New Eng.
Elevated instability is present so showers will be convective
and can't rule out an isold t-storm. Then by late today and
especially this evening, hi-res guidance is suggesting a renewed
area of showers and increasing potential for locally heavy rain
and isold t-storms near the south coast and especially
Cape/Islands as secondary low level jet strengthens and lifts NE
across SE New Eng. Max rainfall amounts will be over the
Cape/Islands with amounts 0.50-1.0", with low risk for up to 2
inches over ACK if convection is realized. Fortunately the
heavier rainfall amounts should remain south of the vulnerable
areas near the south coast so flooding is not anticipated. A
wet evening is anticipated near the south coast and may also see
a few showers this evening further in the interior assocd with
the actual fropa, then improving conditions with partial
clearing overnight as the front moves offshore and drier air
moves in.

Unseasonably mild day today, especially interior as warm sector
airmass overspreads region. While clouds will dominate today,
can't rule out a few breaks of sun this morning. Otherwise
stratus and patchy fog will become more widespread near the
south coast later today and this evening. Highs should reach
well into the 50s, with some lower 60s in the CT valley and
especially NE MA. Along the south coast, southerly flow will
keep max temps in the lower 50s.

Breezy SW winds expected in the coastal plain today as low level
jet shifts to the coast. Soundings show very shallow mixing with
potential for gusts 25-35 mph across SE MA, but stronger LLJ
winds remain above the inversion. However, any convection would
increase risk of mixing down stronger gusts so this will have
to be monitored.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY/...
Main issue for Saturday will be strong and gusty west winds with
strong cold advection in place. Soundings show very steep low
level lapse rates approaching dry adiabatic which will promote
excellent mixing. Wind gusts to 30-40 mph are likely, with
strongest gusts across northern MA. There is a risk that gusts
could be even stronger reaching wind advisory thresholds if we
can mix 850 mb winds down to the surface. Given the very steep
lapse rates and strong cold advection, this can't be ruled out
so this will need to be monitored in later forecasts.

Otherwise, expect a mix of sun and diurnal clouds as mid level
trough moves into New Eng. Given strong cold advection, only
minor temp recovery expected, with high temps mostly in the
mid/upper 40s, but colder over higher terrain.

Saturday and Sunday...

Big picture for the long term period is a persistent broad troughing
over much of the northeast U.S. Within the base of that trough flow
is fairly zonal and progressive, with a series of weak shortwaves
rotating through over several days. The overall weather story is
mostly dry, save for a chance of showers Monday, with below average
temperatures moderating by mid week.

By Saturday night the lagging mid-upper level cold pool makes its
way overhead bringing 850mb temps back down below -12C making for
quite a drop in low temperatures compared to Friday night (by 10-15
degrees). Most locations dip into the 20s. Sunday with high pressure
to our south and a more relaxed pressure gradient we'll be dry with
light winds and temps slightly below normal in the low 40s.

Monday and Tuesday...

Good model agreement in continued below average temperatures under
the lingering trough/cold pool and persistent CAA from the
NW...highs in the upper 30s and mid 40s. Decreasing odds of
rain/snow showers, but the low chance is there for some light precip
on Monday if a weak low can pass close enough to our south. Latest
model runs would indicate less and less chance of us seeing any
precip from it as it stays too far south.

Wednesday and Thursday...

Less confidence in how things play out mid week and beyond, but the
main idea will be increasing temperatures, back to near/slightly
above normal as flow backs around to the SW. Highs reach back into
the mid-upper 40s. There is a chance of a shortwave/surface low that
drops through eastern Canada Thursday will bring the return of
precip chances on or about Wed night/Thursday but sticking with a
slight chance for now.

late afternoon. S/SW wind gusts to 25-30 kt SE MA Cape/Islands
and coastal RI, as well as higher terrain of interior SNE.

IFR conditions in the evening with numerous showers/isold
t-storm and areas of fog focused near the south coast.
Conditions improving after 06z, eventually becoming VFR.

25-35 kt developing, strongest over northern MA.
