Dry and seasonably cold conditions will continue through tonight
as high pressure ridge builds to the north. A storm system will
bring snow changing to ice and rain Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday
night with a significant impact to the evening commute. Remaining
seasonable, yet breezy, later Wednesday into Thursday. Soaking
rains, potential nuisance flood issues Friday into Saturday.
Return cold air and breezy Sunday into Monday. Watching for
another potential storm system the following midweek.

The calm before our next impactful winter storm. Blue skies
outside this afternoon as subsidence and drier air moving south
have allowed the mid deck of clouds to mostly dissipate.
Satellite imagery shows some lingering mid and high clouds along
the south coast. These will increase late tonight into early
Tuesday morning from southwest to northeast as midlevel flow
becomes southwest and pulls in more moisture. Temperatures
tonight dip into the teens and 20s as clear skies and light
winds help radiate efficiently.

*/ Overview...

We continue to forecast a winter storm to impact southern New
England on Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Looking at the big
picture a deep mid level trough and parent surface low pressure
system swing through the Great Lakes region early Tuesday.
While this system stays to our northwest, a secondary low spins
up along the frontal boundary as it traverses the mid- Atlantic
and this low crosses the PVD-BOS corridor. This, as has been
the case recently, will be a mixed bag event. A preceding large
high pressure center to our north over Canada will allow for
snow at the onset, and lingering cold air at the surface. The
problem comes with a warm nose aloft. Given the along shore
track of the surface low and especially the far northwest track
of the 850 mb low, a strong southerly LLJ will push warm air up
and over the colder air lingering at the surface leading to a
period of sleet and some freezing rain before changing to rain.
The exact timing of the changeover is still not 100% certain, a
wavering of 1-2 hours could have significant impact on snow
amounts. This contributed to the decision to hang onto the
Winter Storm Watch for another period and reevaluate with more
of the hi-res guidance available tonight.

1) Timing / Ptype / Impacts

Snow starts over western MA/CT mid-late morning and expands to
eastern MA by early afternoon. Plenty of moisture available
with this event, PWATs approaching 1" and a saturated DGZ. Lots
of forcing for ascent on the front end of this event with a
strong WAA signature, isentropic lift, and a good band of low
level frontogenesis moving through. HREF guidance indicates
robust probabilities of snowfall rates >1"/hr before the warm
nose changes things over. The better chance for these rates
looks to be the further north you are, but everyone has a
chance. This will certainly disrupt the Tuesday evening
commute. Heavy snows are expected to cause hazardous conditions,
especially on untreated roads.

Snow transitions to sleet from the south coast by late
afternoon, moving north. Areas north of the Mass Pike are
expected to change over to sleet after 23-03Z. This event is
a bit unusual in that northwestern MA is likely to change to a
wintry mix before northeastern MA given the wind and trajectory
of the warm air. While a brief period of freezing rain is
possible across the region, the best chance will be over
interior MA...this will depend on how long that cold drainage
flow can hold on at the surface before being overcome. As warmer
air expands we'll change over to rain. The transition line
moves north and west until by early Wednesday morning the all
except for the high terrain of the Berkshires will be purely
rain.

2) Snow and Ice Amounts and Headlines

Snowfall and ice forecasts are holding generally steady, if
adjusted up slightly in some locations. Still expecting 1-2
inches along the south coast, 2-4 inches south of the Mass
Pike, and 4-8 inches to the north. As noted previously, given
the heavy snowfall rates, a small shift in timing of changeover
can have a significant effect on snowfall totals. While
confidence is increasing, given the marginal nature of the
event, a Winter Storm Watch was continued for northern MA while
a Winter Weather Advisory continues for CT, RI, and southeast
MA. Ice accumulations are generally expected to be 0.10" or less
with patchy spots up to 0.25" in interior MA. Accumulations
like these aren't expected to cause widespread damage.

3) Coastal Flooding

Not expecting much in the way of coastal flooding with this
system. Astronomical tides are quite low which helps. A Gale
Warning has been issued for the eastern waters for wind gusts of
35-40 kts which could cause a storm surge of 1.5 to 2 ft. With
seas forecast to only reach 12-14 ft we don't expect flooding to
occur. At most we may see some splashover or very minor flooding
on the east coast during the Tue night high tide.

One thing is for sure, reiterating, is this pattern is not conducive
for a snowy New England winter. Thru mid-February, lee cyclogenesis
maturing over the NE CONUS, deepening interior low centers, initial
wintry precip types with transition to rain courtesy warm air influx
into low centers before clearing out, cold air advection following,
blustery winds with snow showers / flurries lingering along the high
terrain before high pressure settles in, things quiet, before the
next storm takes shape. Break down the details below, confidence is
lower further out, preference to EC / ECens.

Wednesday into Thursday ...

Occlusion lifting, shower activity lingering over the high terrain,
blustery W winds early with surface pressure rises, remaining breezy
through Thursday with the pressure gradient. Mixing well up to H7
with cold air advection, may need to consider wind headlines with
future forecasts. However, worth noting, not incredibly cold as
Arctic air is buffered N by additional energy upstream. Influx of
sub-tropical energy out ahead of lee cyclogenesis, temperatures just
around freezing through H85, seasonable at the surface.

Friday into Saturday ...

Soaking rains Friday night into Saturday. Anomalous S flow and pwats
preceding a surface low occlusion beneath a negative-tilted H5 trof.
Sub-tropical plume, elevated instability, negative showalters, can't
rule out convection especially SE New England. Convergent low-level
forcing beneath a potent H5 vortmax and left-front-quadrant of the
H3 jet, undergoing lift with frontogenetical forcing ... forecast
models suggesting +1" rainfall, mainly courtesy of a prolonged S
plume ahead of the occlusion. Some uncertainty, surprised how models
are underdoing the thetaE tongue compared to the oncoming storm.
Streamflows running high, ground is pretty solid, can't rule out
nuisance flooding of urban centers, small streams / tributaries. One
last note, cold air damming / wedging cold air with advance N
flow but lacking neighboring Arctic air N/E. Maybe a brief onset
freezing rain before all rain. Clearing out Saturday night, likely
shower activity lingering along the high terrain, with preference
to the EC slower solution over faster GFS. Plenty of time to iron
out details.

Sunday onward ...

Cold air proceeding with blustery W winds as the occlusion lifts out
and high pressure settles in. Gradient driven. High settling in by
early next week before the next potential system.
