.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system passes just off the South Coast this
evening. Dry, blustery conditions will follow Sunday, then
colder temperatures arrive for Sunday night and Monday. Another
system will likely bring a transition to snow to rain Monday
night through Tuesday. Potential bouts of snow or rain Tuesday
night through Wednesday night. Cold and dry conditions Thursday
through Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
Observations showed low pressure centered south of RI around
19Z. The low is moving northeast and will pass near/south of the
Islands this evening and pass south of Nova Scotia tonight.
Upper low and associated upper jet are also moving northeast
with the surface system, generating continued lift through the
evening hours. Sufficient instability associated with the low
such that lightning data shows out over the ocean south of the
Islands. Precipitable water values continue around 1 inch this
evening, then diminish tonight.

Expect areas of rain through early tonight, with heaviest rain
along or south of the South Coast. Rain then moves offshore by
midnight, followed by partial clearing overnight. Temperatures
upstream support min temps low to mid 30s, possibly some upper
20s in northwest Mass. This may turn any lingering wet surfaces
into icy patches.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Sunday...

Upper shortwave moves overhead during Sunday. Cold temperatures
advect in at the surface and aloft. This should allow good
mixing during the day, with mixing reaching near 850 mb. This
will tap moisture for daytime clouds. Winds in the mixed layer
will tap northwest winds of 30 to 35 mph, so we expect winds to
gust 30 to 40 mph during the day. Temperatures in the mixed
layer will support surface high temps in the 40s, except a few
high 30s in northwest Mass.

Sunday night...

Continued pressure gradient and cold advection should maintain
gusty winds for at least a part of the night. High pressure
building in will generate subsidence, leading to clearing skies.
Pressure gradient diminishes in Western Mass/CT late at night,
which may allow some radiational cooling...certainly the coldest
temps should be in this region. Expect min temps in the teens,
except lower 20s along the coast.

Overview and model preferences...
Influence from both the N and S stream, under nearly neutral
teleconnections suggest a relative struggle across the N CONUS,
which, through the period remains under at least some influence
of the dominant upper lvl jet. This does not mean that the flow
remains flat/confluent, as there are some perturbations that
will be worth watch. The first starts Mon morning, with an open
trof linked to Baffin Island vortex yielding a shift to much
colder temps, especially compared to the weekend. The next is
more complex, as an initial open wave linked to occluding low
pres passes followed by a sharper wave into Wed. As previous
forecaster noted, this is a marked change from earlier forecasts
for mid week, which remained dry. In fact the influence of this
wave is more strongly reflected with the 05.12Z guidance suite,
which indicates the possibility of a slight negative tilt. With
offshore cyclogenesis to follow and a linked inverted trof, the
risk for continued precip in the form of both snow/rain is
possible. Confidence in this will increase with time, as
guidance has only caught on in the last couple of runs. In any
case, the W coast ridge shifts E late week, allowing the flow to
once again become flat and nearly confluent aloft, yielding a
drying trend into next weekend. A blend of long term operational
guidance looks good into Tue, as it takes into account the cold
air and thermal profiles from the initial occlusion. After this
however, given the complexity mid week, will lean more heavily
on ensemble means to account for the many different meso-scale
features.

Details...

Mon...
Early morning cold thanks to radiational cooling. Morning lows
in the single digits and teens, combined with H92 temps starting
around -8C will limit highs in the 20s to low 30s, mainly a few
degrees below seasonal normal values. Increasing clouds through
the late afternoon/evening.

Mon night into Tue...
Weakening occluding low pres sweeps NW dragging its remnant
frontal boundary across the region early Tue. Moisture loading
overnight is top down, with a deep layer of nearly 20C dewpoint
depressions to overcome, so expect a slow start to the precip,
which is likely to take until after 06Z to begin impacting the
sfc. Column/near sfc wetbulb temps are cold enough to suggest
mainly snow to start, with some light accumulations by the time
of the Tue AM commute. Through the morning, gradual sfc warming
expected with some change over to RA (mainly S) and some
remaining snow (mainly N). Dry air intrusion aloft provides some
issues here, as it cuts off the moisture that is initially
within the DGZ. A transition to potentially sleet/drizzle is
possible as ice nucleation is lost. Sfc temps will ultimately
define what occurs and whether ice accretion is an issue. In
any case, a snow mix for the first part of the day with light
accumulations possible thanks to the strength of the initial
overrunning. More on totals as we approach and thermal issues
are better resolved.

Tue night into Wed night...
Second and slightly more robust shortwave crosses the region,
yielding initial offshore cyclogenesis in the Gulf of Maine with
inverted trof hanging aback across New England. It does have
some NORLUN tendencies to watch, but is lacking the lower lvl
instability one likes to see, time will tell. In any case this
does suggest a risk for precip to continue across S New England,
with the possibility of a narrowly focused band where lower lvl
convergence is maximized. Given the smaller scale nature here,
the exact location will take time to resolve. Temperature
profiles cool with the wave's approach, and sfc layer wetbulbs
do suggest some light SN accumulations possible the trof pivots
and low pres shifts further E.

Thu into the weekend...
Strong cold advection Thu will yield blustery cold conditions.
The below normal temps continue into Fri with slight moderation
by the early weekend. Generally dry conditions during this
period thanks to subsidence with the ridging and confluence
aloft.
