...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO
2 AM EDT SATURDAY...
The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has issued a
Coastal Flood Advisory, which is in effect from 10 PM this
evening to 2 AM EDT Saturday.
* LOCATIONS...Nantucket MA.
* TIMING...From 10 PM this evening to 2 AM EDT Saturday.
* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Up to one foot of inundation
above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near
shorelines and tidal waterways (5.2 to 5.6 feet Mean Lower Low
Water). Minor coastal flooding begins on Easy Street in
Nantucket.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Coastal Flood Advisory is issued for minor coastal flooding of
the most vulnerable shore roads and/or basements due to the
height of storm tide or wave splashover. The majority of roads
remain passable with only isolated closures. There is no
significant threat to life...and impact on property is minimal.

Category thresholds are based on still water levels. Impacts

* LOCATIONS...The southern-most shoreline of RI in Washington
and Newport Counties.
* TIMING...From 5 PM until 9 PM EDT this evening.
* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Up to one half foot of inundation
above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near
shorelines and tidal waterways (5.3 to 6.0 feet Mean Lower Low
Water). Minor coastal flooding occurs along the most
vulnerable shoreline locales in Newport, Portsmouth and
Middletown. This includes flooding at parking lots near
beaches in Newport, and a portion of Hazard Road. Minor
coastal flooding also occurs on several streets in the Common
Fence Point area.
Time of high total tides are approximate to the nearest hour.
Category thresholds are based on still water levels. Impacts
may be greater, depending upon wave action.

.SYNOPSIS...
An ocean storm well south of New England will continue to impact
the coast with strong winds today along with periods of rain
into tonight, mainly confined to eastern MA. The storm exits out
to sea Saturday with a gradual drying trend. Big improvement
Sunday with weak high pressure in control. Dry seasonable
weather likely lingers into Tuesday before a potential strong
frontal system brings the risk of showers midweek. A drying and
cooling trend follows Thursday and Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
145 PM update...
As of the 11 am NHC advisory, Subtropical Storm Melissa was centered
over 38.5 N, 69.6 W. With our area on the outer fringes of
Melissa, the biggest impacts will be felt across eastern MA and
into RI, as well as the coastal waters.
We continue to be in close collaboration with NHC, OPC and adjacent
WFOs. Plan is to continue with the Wind Advisory for
Cape/Islands/BI and Gale Warnings for the coastal waters as
currently in place.
From SPC/RAP mesoanalysis, there was some moistening of the
column over east coastal/SE MA and RI, but over the interior
drier airmass continued to hold on, with PWATs under an inch
and surface dewpoints in the upper 30s to low 40s. Dewpoints in
the Berkshires were in the upper 20s!
Radar continued to show bands rotating inward but eroding as they
progress further W. Will continue close to pops from previous
forecast, ranging from likely/categorical for eastern MA and
most of RI, then chance central MA/northern CT, to slight chance
closer to the east slopes of the Berkshires. Confidence with
continued wind and wave impacts along the coast. Forecast
largely on track but the extent and amount of rainfall remains
fairly uncertain.
Early morning discussion follows...
Ocean storm wobbles well south of New Eng today with not much
movement. The low level jet remains stationary just south of New
Eng and weakens a bit but wind field expands. Drier air still
making its presence felt as bands of rain rotating west from the
ocean continue to break up as they move onshore. However,
deeper moisture plume just offshore as seen in WV imagery is
moving west and will overspread SNE through the morning with all
the guidance showing a near saturated deep column developing.
Thus, expect bands of rain to back in across Cape/Islands and
into eastern MA later this morning.
Deep moisture plume within the warm conveyor belt combined
with convergence along the nose of the low level jet will bring
periods of rain today to eastern New Eng, but mainly confined
to eastern MA. Much of the hi-res guidance is targeting coastal
Plymouth county into Cape cod for locally heavier rainfall
where frictional convergence appears to be playing a factor.
Localized rainfall amounts over an inch are possible through
Fri night in this area. Further west into western MA and the CT
valley, expecting mostly dry conditions although can't rule out
a few showers making it this far west.
Regarding wind forecast, still expecting strong NE winds today
with gusts 40-50 mph outer Cape and especially the Islands,
30-40 mph along the coast decreasing to 25-35 mph gusts back
across I-95 corridor. Wind advisory will continue today for the
Cape/Islands. Highs mostly in the 50s but closer to 50 over the
hills in central MA.

Tonight...
Ocean storm will begin to slowly pull away with decreasing low
level jet. Result will be diminishing wind and rainfall.
However, expect periods of light rain to linger in the east,
particularly eastern MA for much of the night. Gusty winds
persisting along the immediate coast into the evening before
diminishing overnight. Gusts to 40 mph possible over
Cape/Islands in the evening.
Saturday...
Ocean storm continues to pull away with slowly improving
conditions expected, especially in the west. A few showers may
linger across eastern MA into the morning, otherwise clouds
should give way to partial sunshine in the afternoon in the
west as drier air moves in. However, considerable low level
moisture hangs on in the east where clouds will likely dominate
through the day. Gusty northerly winds 20-30 mph over the
Cape/Islands in the morning then diminishing in the afternoon.
Temps reaching the 60s in the CT valley where sunshine develops
50s in the east.

energy ahead of which mild Atlantic air funnels across N Europe. A
series of Rossby wave breaks across W Russia, enough to kick E the
present Siberian H5 cyclone energy. Rippling downstream, the pattern
transitioning across the N Pacific, a WPO / EPO teleconnection role
reversal towards positive yielding a mild N Pacific jet into the W
CONUS. Bering Straight / Alaskan H5 low promoting subtle H5 ridging
into the W Canadian maritimes, a Hudson Bay / E CONUS trof deepens
through which energy rotates round remnant cyclone energy presently
associated with the N-Plains storm system into mid-October. Overall
temperatures close to seasonable during which there'll be shots of
wet weather throughout the following week.

Sweeping occluded front associated with the N-Plains cyclone. Mid-
level drying extending down into the low-levels with lift lacking,
heights rising, subsidence noted in forecast model atmospheric
profiles, looking like a dry frontal passage as the airmass warms
aloft.
Around Monday...
Connection to or separation from the N-Plains cyclone to S-stream
energy. Sub-tropical connection and low-level wind enhancement,
two camps: N-Plains cyclone and lower heights extending S/E
capturing H85-5 vortmax energy pulling it inward along with
convergent low- level forcing putting rainfall outcomes across S
New England, yet another camp keeping the two separate.
Ensemble member spread, not convinced to bite into the 11.0z
GFS. EC however had edged lower H5 heights with the latest run.
Maintain the slight chance to chance PoPs over SE-coastal MA and
RI.
Tuesday into Tuesday night...
Let's keep it seasonable with highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s.
Dry.
Around Wednesday into Wednesday night...
What looks to be a double-barrel low setup. Downsheared energy that
rotates round the remnant N-Plains cyclone over E Canada / NE CONUS
captures S-stream energy / eastern N-Pacific tropical energy. As it
obtains a negative-tilt, parent PV-lobe, a double-barrel low setup
as Great Lakes low transfers towards the mid-Atlantic undergoing
rapid cyclogenesis towards the SE Canadian maritimes. Guidance has
edged further with a slightly stronger storm system with each model
run but variance with rainfall outcomes across our region with the
low transition. Sweeping cold front associated with the Great Lakes
low that loses support as dynamics shift S/E immediately offshore.
Notable spread within ensemble members. So hesitant on advertising a
washout. Chance PoPs. Potential in-between wedge of subsidence and
dry air between the two systems. Likely shifts with later forecasts,
changing rainfall outcomes. Be interesting if offshore cyclogenesis
tucks closer to the coast. Confident however on a windy, cool, dry
day on Thursday. developing
Friday onward...
Though questionable magnitude of cold air aloft can't rule out that
with parent surface high pressure, light winds, and clear conditions
that a combination of frost / freeze headlines for Thursday night
and Friday night are possible. Long range, should the pattern reload
with W CONUS cyclone development, downstream E CONUS ridging, then a
brief warm-up is possible early the following week that's advertised
in the 8-14 day CPC temperature outlook.

MA and RI, MVFR to IFR, with periods of rain mainly BOS-PVD and
vicinity, and Cape/Islands. BAF-BDL CIGs lower to MVFR, but at
this time rain not expected. NE gusts to 35-40 kt Cape/Islands,
30-35 kt BOS-PVD, and 25-30 kt gusts rest of SNE. Winds
diminishing tonight.
Saturday...
MVFR/IFR cigs gradually improving to VFR from west to east
during the afternoon, but MVFR cigs persisting across eastern
MA and IFR lingering on the Cape/Islands. Lingering morning
showers possible eastern MA. N gusts around 25 kt along the
coast, diminishing in the afternoon.
KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF. MVFR cigs with
periods of rain today. Cigs may lower to IFR by 00Z this evening.
KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence in a period of MVFR cigs
late this afternoon into tonight.
