...POTENT WINTER STORM CONTINUING TO ORGANIZE AND TAKING AIM AT 
EASTERN COLORADO...

.Satellite imagery and the latest computer forecast models
continue showing a very strong storm system developing over
Colorado in the next 24 hours. Scattered showers and a few
embedded thunderstorms have been moving over northeastern Colorado
this evening and snow shower activity has been on the increase
over the mountains. By Wednesday morning, a rapidly deepening low
pressure area is forecast to be located over southeast Colorado.
Rain is expected to be falling across the northeast plains by
sunrise. A cold front will move over the northeast plains between
8 AM and noon, changing precipitation over to snow and drastically increasing
the winds as cold air moves in from the north. Blizzard conditions
are expected to spread across northeast Colorado through the
afternoon as snow intensities increase and strong winds produce 
poor visibilities in blowing and drifting snow. The most hazardous
conditions will be from the I-25 corridor eastward. Blizzard
conditions are expected to persist overnight. 

West of the I-25 Urban Corridor, winds will be a little less than
out on the plains, but moderate to heavy snow will combine with
the winds to produce significant travel impacts during the
afternoon and evening. 

Mountain areas will also see more accumulating snowfall overnight
and Wednesday.

...INTENSE WINTER STORM DEVELOPING FOR THE MOUNTAINS AND EASTERN
COLORADO...

.A winter storm centered over southeastern Colorado will rapidly
intensify this morning. This will produce very strong winds and
areas of heavy snow. Rain will change to snow along the Front
Range this morning, with blizzard conditions developing quickly
in the late morning or early afternoon. These conditions will
spread eastward across the plains this afternoon. Near zero
visibilities are expected with wind gusts of up to 80 mph and up
to a foot of snow on the plains east of a line from Greeley to
Denver International Airport. In areas closer to the mountains,
there will be less snow, but a period of very heavy snow and
strong winds is likely during the day today that will likely
create near blizzard conditions for a while. Strong winds will
continue to create blizzard conditions on the plains overnight
tonight. Closer to the mountains, there will be some improvement
but still enough wind for some drifting snow and continued
difficult travel.

Much of the northern Colorado mountains will also see heavy snow
and windy conditions today, especially near the Wyoming border. 

Travelers across the Colorado mountains and eastern plains should
consider canceling travel plans today, as conditions will
deteriorate quickly during the late morning or early afternoon. Be
aware that if you go somewhere this morning, you could become 
stranded or have a very difficult time returning this afternoon.
Road closures can be expected, especially on the eastern plains
and near the Wyoming border, but possibly also along the I-25
corridor during the peak of the storm later today. Residents
should also be prepared for power outages from the very strong
winds.

.A winter storm centered over southeastern Colorado will continue
to intensify through this afternoon. This will produce very 
strong winds and areas of heavy snow. Rain has already changed to
snow over the I-25 urban corridor, and rain will change to snow 
over the plains during early to middle afternoon. Blizzard 
conditions will develop quickly through the early afternoon. Near 
zero visibilities are expected with wind gusts of up to 80 mph and
up to a foot of snow on the plains east of a line from Greeley to
Denver International Airport. 

In areas closer to the mountains, there will be less snow, but a 
period of very heavy snow and strong winds is likely during the 
day today that will likely create near blizzard conditions for a 
while. Strong winds will continue to create blizzard conditions on
the plains overnight tonight. Closer to the mountains, there will
be some improvement but still enough wind for some drifting snow 
and continued difficult travel. Much of the northern Colorado 
mountains will also see heavy snow and windy conditions today, 
especially near the Wyoming border.

Travelers across the Colorado mountains and eastern plains should
consider canceling travel plans today, as conditions will
deteriorate quickly during the late morning or early afternoon.
Be aware that if you travel today, you could become stranded or 
have a very difficult time returning this afternoon. Road closures
can be expected, especially on the eastern plains and near the 
Wyoming border, but possibly also along the I- 25 corridor during 
the peak of the storm later today. Residents should also be

.The powerful winter storm affecting eastern Colorado today has
spread blizzard conditions across northeast Colorado from the
Front Range Foothills eastward to the Kansas border and from the
Wyoming border down to the Palmer Divide. Winds have been gusting
to 65 mph at most locations and up to 80 mph at a few locations. Snowfall
of several inches has also occurred. 

Travel across northeast Colorado has been severely impacted with 
many highways across northeast Colorado closed. Highway closures 
include I-76 northeast of Thornton, I-70 east of Watkins and I-25 
from the Denver Tech Center to the Air Force Academy. I-70 west of
Denver has also been closed from Golden to Idaho Springs. Pena 
Boulevard to Denver Airport has also been closed. 

Power outages have also been scattered across northeast Colorado
with up to 128,000 customers without power. 

The blizzard conditions are expected to continue through the
afternoon. Some improvement is expected this evening as snowfall 
rates decrease and wind speeds begin to come down.

...INTENSE WINTER STORM CONTINUES EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS...

.The powerful winter storm affecting eastern Colorado today has
spread blizzard conditions across northeast Colorado from the
Front Range Foothills eastward to the Kansas border and from the
Wyoming border down to the Palmer Divide. Winds have been gusting
to 65 mph at most locations and up to 80 mph at a few locations.
The winds and snow have decreased in the mountains, so blizzard 
warnings have been downgraded to advisories for the night for
continued light snow. The most intense portion of the storm has 
now shifted east of the Interstate 25 corridor. 

Travel across northeast Colorado has been severely impacted with
many highways across northeast Colorado closed. Highway closures
include I-76 northeast of Thornton, I-70 east of Watkins and I-
25 from the Denver Tech Center to the Air Force Academy. I-
70 west of Denver has also been closed from Golden to Idaho
Springs. Pena Boulevard to Denver Airport has also been closed.

Power outages have also been scattered across northeast Colorado
with up to 128,000 customers without power.

The blizzard conditions are expected to continue through the
evening hours across lower elevations. Some improvement is 
expected this evening as snowfall rates decrease and wind speeds 
begin to decrease.

...INTENSE WINTER STORM CONTINUES OVER THE EASTERN PLAINS AND
PALMER DIVIDE...

.The powerful winter storm that brought blizzard conditions to
much of the area will slowly pull away from the state tonight. As
a result, snow intensity will slowly decrease across the plains
and Palmer Divide area tonight. However, strong winds will
continue east of I-25 and over the Palmer Divide, and that is 
keeping blizzard conditions in place. 

The roaring winds across the plains on Wednesday mostly peaked in
the 60 to 80 mph range. Snowfall amounts have ranged from 2-6 
inches right next to the foothills, to 6 to 20 inches in the 
mountains and foothills, to between 4 and 10 inches across most of
the northeast Colorado plains and Palmer Divide area east of 
I-25.

Travel across northeast Colorado has been severely impacted and many
highways east of Denver remain closed.

Power outages have also been scattered across northeast Colorado,
with at one point up to 200,000 customers without power.

A slow but gradual improvement in conditions can be expected
overnight into early Thursday morning, but travel in some
locations is extremely dangerous. Do not travel unless absolutely

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy
  blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The cold

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 320 AM MDT Tue Mar 12 2019

Today will be the calm before the storm with noticeably warmer
temperatures on the plains this afternoon. The big upcoming storm
is currently spinning over northern Baja with a resultant
southwest flow aloft over Colorado. There is a chunk of moisture
lifting northward over the area with a few showers over southern
and eastern sections of the forecast area this morning. At the
surface there is a light, yet moist south to southeast low level
flow and has resulted in some low clouds/patchy fog over the far
northeast plains.

The upper low will begin to track northeast today and into
central Arizona by early this evening. There will be some increase
in moisture by late in the day but QG ascent is still fairly
weak. The airmass will become slightly unstable and even a few
thunderstorms are possible over the mountains and eastern plains. As
the upper low approaches far south central Colorado later
tonight, moisture and QG ascent will be increasing over much of
Colorado. This will continue to increase chances of precipitation
especially later tonight. 700mb temperatures will remain above
zero on the plains tonight, so any precipitation will fall as
rain. Have delayed the start of the winter storm watch in the
mountains/northern Front Range foothills until 12z Wednesday as
any snowfall tonight will be under 3 inches.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

A deep trough currently centered over Baja California will move
northeastward onto the central Great Plains by midday Wednesday.
During this time, a coupled jet will setup in the upper levels
with northeast Colorado being under the right entrance region of a
jet over Wyoming and Montana and the left exit region of a jet
over Kansas and Oklahoma. Models show great upper level divergence
and QG ascent from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.
At the low to mid levels, warm air advection will help to lower
surface pressures before strong lee cyclogenesis develops late
Tuesday night across southeast Colorado. During the day on
Wednesday, a TROWAL will develop to the northwest side of the
cyclone and this will help bring moderate to heavy precipitation
to north central and northeast Colorado. One feature of note that
is important to the development of this system, is the secondary
trough that is currently off the coast of Oregon. This trough has
colder air associated with it and the injection of this cold air
is critical in that it will help to deepen and amplify the main
trough, further strengthening this storm. It is also important
because it will be the key factor in changing the precip type over
northeast Colorado from rain to snow during the day Wednesday.
One of the biggest question marks with this system is the timing,
location, and strength of this low to mid level cold air. Right
now, it appears the Denver metro and surrounding areas will see
this transition from rain to snow between 15-18Z. If it gets into
north central and northeast Colorado faster than predicted, it
will likely mean that there will be a quicker transition to snow
and, therefore, higher snowfall totals. If it gets into the region
slower, more rain may occur.

To put this storm into perspective, the NAEFS and GEFS both show the
MSLP across southeast Colorado and Kansas to be at the minimum
pressure for all hours in the climate database. The climate
databases include 30-year (NAEFS) and 27-year (GEFS) period of
records. In addition, a tweet from the Dodge City, KS office
mentioned that they will be close to setting an all time record
low surface pressure with at least a 140 year period of record. A
quick look at the SPC sounding climatology page revealed that
Denver (DNR) may set a record low 700-mb height, among other
noteworthy records, depending on the exact track of the low
pressure system. Point being, this storm is quite an anomaly and
forecast models may be subject to more errors and worse forecasts
compared to more normal conditions. It is something to keep in
mind for those forecasting this storm.

With that being said, global models have been consistent with
this storm and are generally in good overall agreement. They
differ on the exact location of the heaviest band of precip but
that may be difficult to forecast until a couple hours before the
event. Convection allowing models also show the potential for very
heavy banding and they disagree on the location the heaviest
bands as well. Some models indicate that there will be a
considerable amount of downslope flow over the foothills and
western urban corridor that will shutoff the snowfall by Wednesday
afternoon. Judging by the position of the low in southeastern
Colorado, it seems fair that this downslope flow will occur so I
have decreased the QPF and snow amounts in this area. With the
uncertainty with regards to the potential for downslope flow and
the slight decrease in snow amounts across the this area, we have
decided to keep the Winter Storm Watch. With the onset of the
snow still over 30 hour out from the time this discussion was
written, there's still enough time to consider more data and
model runs to then make a decision. It is important to note that
this does not change the message. Those expecting to travel during
the late morning through the early evening should expect
dangerous travel conditions and should reconsider travel if
possible. QPF and snowfall amounts were kept roughly the same or
increased from the Palmer Divide to the northeast plains. Blizzard
conditions still appear likely there.

The part of the forecast with the highest confidence is the strong
wind gusts of up to 75 mph that will occur on the eastern plains.
This is due to the tight pressure gradient and strong boundary
layer winds of above 60 knots that will likely be brought down to
the surface in the heaviest snow showers. Sustained winds and
gusts were both increased mainly east of I-25.

Some light snow will linger in the mountains on Thursday but the
rest of the extended forecast will see mainly dry conditions with
below normal temperatures.

VFR with varying amounts of middle and high level moisture through
the middle of the afternoon. Expect scattered showers to develop
late in the day and through the evening as the upper low moves
closer to Colorado from the southwest. Expect IFR conditions to
develop later tonight as more widespread rain showers develop.

Strong winter storm is expected to the hit the local terminals on
Wednesday. Rain is expected to change to snow 15Z- 17Z Wednesday.
Heavy snow, strong winds, and blowing snow are expected at KDEN
and the Denver area after 18Z Wednesday. An extended period of
visibilities less than a quarter mile are expected Wednesday
afternoon and early evening.

Plains Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night...

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

There will be a chance of snow showers in the north central
mountains today and this evening with a slight chance of rain
showers in the foothills, across the Palmer Divide, and over the
near by plains. Any snow accumulation in the mountains will be on
the light side today. An isolated thunderstorm could occur as
well. There will be a gradual increase in shower activity
overnight tonight in advance of the upcoming storm system.
Temperatures will be warm enough for showers to remain as rain
across the plains.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

A strong storm system with heavy snow and very strong winds will affect
the forecast area Wednesday into Thursday morning. The combination
of the low visibilities in the heavy snow and strong winds will
create blizzard conditions over the plains of eastern Colorado
Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. For the urban corridor,
snowfall amounts will be lighter but near blizzard conditions will
still be possible with hazardous travel conditions Wednesday
afternoon and evening. The mountains will see moderate to heavy
snowfall amounts from this system. By mid Thursday into early next
week, dry weather is expected for the forecast area with below
normal temperatures.
