...MORE SNOW HEADED FOR THE MOUNTAINS...

.A moist Pacific storm system will move into the northern
mountains of Colorado, bringing snow and hazardous winter travel
conditions tonight and Friday. The snow will first increase in 
the mountains around Rabbit Ears Pass late this afternoon and 
evening, and will be heavy at times through Friday. In the Front 
Range mountains from Rocky Mountain National Park southward 
through the I-70 Corridor, snow will become widespread this 
evening, with a period of more substantial snow late tonight into
Friday morning. Travel conditions will deteriorate overnight and 
remain hazardous through Friday. People planning to travel in the 
Colorado high country should be prepared for slick roads, slow 
travel, and reduced visibilities in snow and blowing snow. Travel
delays and restrictions over the higher mountains are likely.

...SNOW DECREASING THIS AFTERNOON...

.A moist Pacific storm system will move from the Colorado
mountains across southeastern Colorado this afternoon. Snow over
the mountains will slowly diminish during the afternoon. A batch
of heavy snow showers along the foothills west and southwest of
Denver will move onto the plains toward Limon, diminishing in
intensity. 

Travelers should still expect poor road conditions in the
mountains this afternoon. There will also be some areas from the
west and south sides of the Denver metro area into the foothills
and Douglas county that will have slushy roads for a few hours.
Travelers in these areas should check for road and traffic
conditions. Some improvement is expected by rush hour, though 
there may still be a little slush around Monument hill and in the
foothills southwest of Denver.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Main concern through tonight will be the incoming snow for the
mountains. Latest satellite and radar imagery shows a deep plume
of Pacific moisture streaming across California and into Nevada,
with 700-500 mb Specific Humidity values of 2-3 g/kg and
Integrated Vapor Transport (IVT) near 2 standardized anomalies.
This plume will reach our northern mountains by this evening. Flow
is initially southwesterly which will limit the more significant
snowfall to the mountains near and north of Rabbit Ears Pass early
in this event. However, we do anticipate widespread lighter snow
to spread into the I-70 Corridor as well through the course of the
evening as there is sufficient synoptic scale lift seen in the QG
vertical motion fields and lapse rates are nearly moist adiabatic.
Snow will continue across the mountains through Friday - see
further details below in the Long Term section. That will support
the issuance of a Winter Storm Warning for the northern Gore and
Park Range where the heaviest totals will occur, and a Winter
Weather Advisory for the Front Range Mountains from the Medicine
Bow Range and RMNP area southward through Summit County.

Backing up to today, strong westerly flow aloft will bring gusty
winds to the higher slopes, along with a few lingering snow
showers this morning. Then, there should be a gradual decrease in
clouds and break in snow showers before the deeper moisture plume
arrives late this afternoon and early evening from the west. On
the plains, some mountain wave clouds may impact temperatures,
although they should break a little in the afternoon as flow aloft
turns more southwesterly. Downslope flow and shallow inversions
would support highs in the mid to upper 50s, but will have to
watch cloud cover of course which could result in slightly cooler
temperatures.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

An upper level trough will move across the area on Fri along with a
shot of mid level qg ascent and favorable lapse rates.  Thus will
see snow in the mtns thru the day with most amounts in the advisory
criteria.  Only exception would be in zn 31 where warning criteria
will be met.

Over lower elevations a cold front will move across nern CO in the
morning hours with northerly low level flow. Combination of front
moving across and associated mid level ascent should produce a
good chc of snow over the Palmer Divide/srn Foothills and over
portions of the Denver metro area. Accumulations will be light
with 2 to 4 inches over the srn Foothills/Palmer Divide with an
inch or two possible across portions of the Denver metro area. As
for highs readings will be in the mid 30s to lower 40s across the
plains.

For Fri night the upper level trough will move southeast of the area
as drier air spreads across so snow will decrease in the mtns.
Across lower elevations there will be a chc of light snow in the srn
Foothills/Palmer Divide early in the evening otherwise it will be
dry.

On Sat northwest flow aloft will be over the area with some moisture
embedded in the flow.  Thus will keep in a chc of orographic snow
across the mtns.  Across nern CO it will be dry as sfc lee trough
develops.  This will allow for downslope flow which will allow highs
to rise into the 45 to 50 degree range.

By Sun the flow aloft will become more westerly with a dry airmass
in place.  Thus will not mention any precip.  Meanwhile the sfc lee
trough will intensify which will lead to stronger downslope flow and
allow for highs to reach the 50s across the plains.

On Mon another upper level trough will move into the region.  Timing
and strength of of this system is still not certain but will keep
in a good chc of snow in the mtns with a chc across lower
elevations. By Tue this system should move out of the area with
dry conditions returning with below normal temperatures.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday morning)

VFR conditions expected through tonight. South/southwest winds
around 10 knots this morning may turn a bit more southeasterly
16Z-19Z, but also can't rule out a more westerly wind with gusts
around 20 knots depending on amount of mixing today. Most likely
this would occur at KBJC and not KDEN or KAPA. Cold front is
expected to arrive by 15Z Friday with north winds increasing to
15G25 knots. Ceilings expected to gradually lower to around 5000
feet and likely lower than that by Friday afternoon as snow
showers develop in the area.

MOUNTAINS...

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A weather system moving over the state today will increase snow over
the mountains, with 6 to 12 inches over the Park Range and 2 to 6
inches over the rest of the mountains. Winds will increase in the
mountains with gusts to 50 mph by this afternoon creating areas
of blowing snow, impacting travel especially over mountain passes.
The plains will remain dry with above normal temperatures.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Light snow showers lingering in the northern mountains Thursday
morning will give way to partial clearing and improving travel
conditions for the remainder of the day.

Another weather system will arrive Thursday night, bringing
accumulating snow to all of the Colorado mountains Thursday night
and Friday. There will also be a chance of snow across the plains
on Friday, with mainly light accumulations expected and mostly
south of I-76. It will also be cooler and windy on the plains
Friday.

After dry and warmer weather returns this weekend, another weather
system may bring more snow and colder temperatures for late Monday
into Tuesday.
