Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 317 AM MST Fri Jan 11 2019 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 305 AM MST Fri Jan 11 2019 An upper level trough will affect the area today with a closed low eventually developing over sern CO by late aftn. This low will then move eastward across Kansas tonight. At the sfc, low pres will be over the Texas panhandle as high pres builds into nrn Co thru the day. Analysis of qg fields shows favorable ascent across the area today into the evening hours although the strongest ascent will be across srn portions of the CWA. Meanwhile, although sfc winds will become northerly this aftn into the evening hours, the 700 mb component will have more of a northeast component based on latest data. Furthermore soundings show airmass becoming moist adiabatic later this morning and continuing into the early evening hours. Thus will see widespread pcpn across much of the area today into this evening except for areas closer to the WY-NE border. As for snow potential should see advisory amounts in the mtns east of the divide and across the nrn foothills. Across the srn foothills and over the Palmer Divide amounts could approach warning criteria. Over lower elevations there is still some uncertainty how much accumulating snow may occur during the daylight hours as highs will be in the mid 30s with rather warm ground temps. At this point roads will probably stay wet thru the aftn with any accumulation confined to grassy areas in an around Denver. After sunset temps will become cold enough for snow to start accumulating on roads. Currently have inherited advisories in the Denver area but main impact would likely be this evening through midnight. Across the rest of the plains temps will be warm enough for a rain/snow mix through the aftn except along the I-70 towards Limon. By late this aftn/evening there could be a need for advisories in zones 45 and 46. After midnight should begin to see a decrease in pcpn as qg ascent weakens along with the upslope component, although lingering snow could continue much of the night in the srn foothills and across the Palmer Divide. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 305 AM MST Fri Jan 11 2019 |Exiting storm system will be well into Kansas by early Saturday morning but lingering moisture will keep clouds and still a chance of snow showers over the Palmer Divide and southern foothills. The lower atmosphere will slowly dry out through the day on Saturday but very little warming expected. Have dropped high temperatures a few more degrees from previous forecast. As the blocking high pressure ridge remains over the northern Rockies another weaker system expected to to traverse across far southern Colorado on Saturday night and Sunday. This will keep a chance of snow ongoing, especially in the mountains along and south of the interstate 70 corridor. Additional snowfall with this weaker system looks to be rather light. Sunday night and Monday look to be dry along with a slow warming trend. Weak ridging aloft will remain over the region until Wednesday and then more zonal westerly flow through the end of the week. This will result in a chance of snow moving back into the mountains in the Tuesday through Thursday time period. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning) Issued at 305 AM MST Fri Jan 11 2019 IFR conditions will develop this morning LIFR conditions at times thru the day as snow falls through this afternoon.
