Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 411 AM MDT Sat Sep 28 2019 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 345 AM MDT Sat Sep 28 2019 One final batch of showers is seen on radar and satellite this morning over the north central mountains. These showers will move out of our CWA by sunrise as the back edge of the colder cloud tops has entered Grand County around 345 am this morning. Low clouds and light drizzle will be possible through the mid morning over the eastern plains mainly south and east of DIA. Water vapor imagery currently shows the leading edge of a dry intrusion over eastern Utah which will push through our CWA later this morning drying conditions out and dissipating cloud cover. Today will be the beginning of a rather windy stretch for our area as we begin to feel the influence of a deepening trough over the western US. The higher terrain will see gusts up to 40 mph out of the southwest as winds mix down from the southwesterly jet stream overhead. Strong cyclogenesis over Wyoming today will aid in strengthening south to southeast winds over lower elevations with gusts up to 35 mph possible. There may be just enough instability to form a few showers over the mountains this afternoon but the coverage will be minimal. I expect that if any showers do form, they will likely be over and downstream of the stretch of mountains from Leadville to Idaho Springs which normally has the best orographic forcing in southwest flow. Highs will be near to slightly above normal in most locations. Persistent southerly flow tonight will allow for low temperatures to be well above normal with dry conditions. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 325 AM MDT Sat Sep 28 2019 A stg storm system will remain over the nwrn US with southwest flow aloft across the area on Sun. Cross-sections show a dry airmass covering much of the area with no precip expected thru the day. At lower elevations, sfc low pres will intensify from sern WY into nern CO with gusty south to southwest winds across the Palmer Divide and plains. Meanwhile, with downslope southwesterly low level flow, this will allow for well above normal temps. Highs across the plains will be in the 80s with a few lower 90's possible in a few spots. For Sun night, there will be some increase in moisture over the far nrn mtns mainly in zn 31. This area will also be in the vicinity of a stronger upper level jet so will mention a chc of higher based showers and storms. Elsewhere it will remain dry. On Mon the flow aloft will remain southwesterly with little moisture embedded in the flow. Thus dry conditions will remain over much of the area. Meanwhile, a cold front will be near the WY-CO border around 12z, but is fcst to stall out near a Denver to Akron line by midday. South of the front, gusty south to southwest winds will continue, with another day of well above normal temperatures. North of the front temperatures will drop back to more seasonal levels. By Mon night into Tue a stronger surge of cooler air will move across nern CO with abundant low clouds expected. Soundings also would support some very light rain/drizzle as well overnight into Tue morning. If inversions hold and low level cloud cover doesn't burn off, then highs may not get out of the 50s across much of nern CO. Meanwhile across the higher terrain along and west of the divide it looks dry and windy as southwesterly flow aloft continues. For Tue night there may end up being a better chc of rain over portions of nern CO. QG fields show some mid level ascent moving across overnight. In addition the right exit region of an upper level jet will be in place. Thus have left in higher pops across the plains. Over the higher terrain it looks mainly dry. On Wed, the main upper level trough will move across the northern and central Rockies. Overall, there isn't that much moisture associated with the southern part of the trough, so precip chances over the higher terrain will remain on the low side. Over nern CO, the low level flow will be east to southeast with some influx of moisture. Thus as the main portion of the upper level trough moves across Wed night, could see another chance of rain across the plains. Highs on Wed will remain below normal as readings over nern CO range from the mid 50s to lower 60s. By Thu, the upper level trough will move east of the area with dry west to southwest flow aloft. Temperatures will begin to moderate with high in the mid 60s to lower 70s over nern CO. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Sunday morning) Issued at 325 AM MDT Sat Sep 28 2019 VFR conditions will continue through Saturday night at DEN and APA. There are currently lower ceilings around 2,000 ft at BJC and these MVFR ceilings will be possible through 14Z. Lower ceilings are not expected at DEN and APA as clouds seem to be moving away from those locations. Light southeast winds will become moderate to strong southerly winds by the late morning. Winds will be sustained between 15-20 knots with gusts up to 30 knots possible this afternoon at DEN and APA. It will generally be windier up near the Wyoming border, with gusty westerly winds up to 50 mph, and drier further south over the foothills and urban corridor or Boulder and Jefferson counties. Care should be taken with any kind of outdoor burning in these areas. Increasing moisture from the west will lead to a few showers or thunderstorms later this evening into the early morning hours over the mountains. A cold front will drop south across the plains after midnight. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday Dry, warm and windy conditions are expected on Saturday. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph over the mountains. Stronger winds are possible on Sunday with gusts up to 45 mph over the plains and 55 mph over the mountains. Due to relative humidities reaching as low as 10 percent, there will be elevated to critical fire danger mainly over the plains, southern foothills and mountain valleys.
