Issued at 753 PM MST Thu Nov 28 2019 Areas of low clouds and fog, were over the nern plains, and were beginning to move southward, over nrn areas of the I-25 Corridor, around the backside of a sfc low east of Denver. Thus should see low clouds and fog over much of the plains overnight. Some dense fog could certainly form over portions of the Urban Corridor after midnight and along the South Platte River Valley. Meanwhile high wind potential still exists Fri night into Sat. An intense upper level low, will develop over nern CO Fri evening, an then move ene into central NE by Sat morning. Latest cross- sections, show a stg critical layer over nrn CO Fri night into Sat morning, with component along winds around 70 kt. Hi res data has been rather consistent in showing wind gusts from 80 to 90 mph, across portions of the mtns and in and near the foothills as well. These winds combined with recent heavy snowfall will create considerable blowing snow as well Friday night into Sat with very poor visibilities in and near the foothills. Have added zone 38 to the high wind watch, since some of the stronger winds may affect the Fort Collins area and along I-25 from Wellington to the Wyoming border. UPDATE Issued at 340 PM MST Thu Nov 28 2019 Issued a Winter Storm Watch for zone 31, where the heaviest snow is expected Friday into Saturday. Snowfall amounts of 6 to 15 inches will be possible Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. This along with strong winds possibly up to 55 mph will likely impact travel. Another concern is zone 33, however winds will likely be more of the issue (gusts over 70 mph likely) than snowfall, and the High Wind Watch already covers this potential impact. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday) Issued at 257 PM MST Thu Nov 28 2019 Northern Colorado will remain under a strong southwest flow aloft tonight and much of Friday, ahead of a very strong storm system across California. Much of the mountains and adjacent plains are mostly sunny and hazy this afternoon while the eastern portions of Colorado remain under low clouds and patchy fog. There continues to be a moist, low level southeast flow through this region along with strong low level inversion helping to keep clouds into the picture. Main question is for tonight how much the low clouds wrap in along the Front Range. High resolution models tend to keep much of the low clouds north of Denver but given weak Denver cyclone feel the stratus/fog will at least wrap into north Denver, including DIA by later tonight. Mountains will remain mostly dry tonight under strong southwest flow which is not conducive to much precip. There will also be steeping lapse rates with even some surface based CAPEs across elevated terrain across the Palmer Divide and across the mountains. SPC has much of the area in general thunder and wouldn't be surprised to see some thunder Friday afternoon especially given lightning strikes across southern California. Mountain snow showers will also increase during the afternoon, but initially lightning the downsloping south-southwest flow at mountain top. Could see 2-4 inches of snow which locally higher amounts given the convective element. For now, don't believe it will warrant an advisory. Across lower elevations, will go with scattered showers which could be rain or snow given there will be quite a range of temperatures during the afternoon. Don't expect much accumulation but could be local amounts up to an inch under a brief heavier snow shower. As mentioned, temperatures will be quite varied with coldest readings form Denver north and east which will be under the soup of clouds/fog. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday) Issued at 257 PM MST Thu Nov 28 2019 The surface, 700 and 500 mb lows will push northeast into Nebraska Friday evening, becoming vertically stacked overnight. With higher pressure west of the Rockies pushing winds into the low to the east, a tight pressure gradient will force strong winds across the mountains and down the leeside into the foothills and western suburbs. Forecast cross sections and soundings continue to show the mean state critical layer set up as flow reversal sets up by 03z, with 70+kt winds at mountain top, ready to be shoved down the lee slopes. The difficult forecast challenge is the question on whether the strong winds will scour out the cold airmass over the urban corridor. Overall, most models seem to want to hold on to the cold airmass, having the strong winds stay above it. However, with winds this strong after the upper trough passes overhead as well with possible convection in the afternoon, I have to believe that the winds should be able to scour it out. Therefore, have increased winds into the urban corridor, and have warmed minimum temperatures as well as max temperatures for Saturday by bringing the 700mb temperatures down dry adiabatically. I also zeroed the chances of precipitation along the urban corridor after 8pm Friday night, as we should be downsloping at this point. The one exception is up near the Wyoming border where synoptic lift will be better. As for the High Wind Watch in place, though confidence is growing that criteria will be reached, will keep it going as a watch as its still 30 hours out. Travelers planning on driving in the mountains/foothills as well as the normally windy spots in the western suburbs should be aware that conditions will be difficult due to the strength of the winds and the reduction in visibility due to blowing snow. I did start the watch a little later, at 8pm, as the strong winds won't likely push down until then. Have also limited it going out to Saturday early evening, as winds will still be strong but not up to criteria by 6 pm. Another 2 to 4 inches of snow may occur over the high mountains, with possibly up to 8 over the mountains north of Rabbit Ears Pass. This area may need a highlight if models continue to show this amount of accumulating snow. Did not want to at this point, as southwest and west usually isn't the best wind direction for those areas. The vertically stacked low over SD/NE Saturday morning will continue slowly pushing away from Colorado, however strong northwesterly winds from the surface up to 300 mb at least will mix down in the downward QG motion over the plains. Speeds of 25 to 45 with gusts to 65 mph possible are expected over the far northeastern plains. Confidence is also improving for the strong winds, but it's tough to know exactly where depending on whether the colder airmass at the surface will limit the winds mixing all the way. Will continue the highlight as a watch also, as its 36 to 40 hours out still. Some light snow will likely occur, but less than an inch. Still, with this strong of winds, some snow already on the ground from the snowstorm a couple days ago may be lofted and cause visibility issues. Saturday will likely be a challenging day to travel over northeastern Colorado. Sunday and Monday will have warming temperatures and mostly dry weather as an upper ridge builds in from the west. An upper trough will sink down slightly over the northern Rockies however to bring some snow potential to the northern mountains. Winds, while not at warning criteria, will still remain breezy to strong over the mountains due to the jet rounding the top of the ridge being overhead. This will bring light snow and a few possible thunderstorms to the mountains, perhaps 3 to 8 inches of snow accumulation, with highest amounts near and north of Rabbit Ears Pass. However the main impact for the forecast area will be strong and potentially damaging winds. The wind threat will begin in the Front Range Mountains and foothills Friday night, spreading onto the northeast plains Saturday. Northwesterly winds are currently expected to have speeds of up to 85 mph in the mountains, and up to 65 mph over the northeast plains. With the recent snowstorm, this could cause reduced visibility in the aforementioned areas due to blowing snow on the ground. Those traveling Friday night or Saturday may need to alter plans due to the strong winds and blowing snow. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT... Spotter activation will not be needed today or tonight but reports of fog, snow and strong winds would be greatly appreciated.
