Increased snowfall amounts slightly over the mountains this
afternoon into the evening as high resolution models are
consistently showing a wave of higher snowfall rates pushing
southeast with the cold advection. This, along with the
strengthening winds over the mountains creating blowing snow, will
likely impact this evenings mountain rush hour.

Getting higher confidence on the need to upgrade the High Wind
Watch to a Warning for the mountains and foothills and Cheyenne
Ridge area, looking now further east along the northern Colorado
plains as it seems like the strong winds may push further. The
precipitation over the mountains may limit some of the highest
gusts of 90 mph mentioned, yet still think there's a good shot of
75 mph.

Today, the upper level ridge will be over the Central Plains
with a strong southwesterly flow developing over western CO. A
southwest to northeast oriented 140 kt jet max over central UT at
12z will shift into western CO by 18z today and over eastern CO by
00z this evening. The heaviest snowfall is expected to occur over
zone 31, where the orographic component will be most favorable.
The best period of snowfall is expected to be from around 15z to
21z today. The models show a brief period of weak to moderate QG
ascent as this upper level jet translates eastward across the
state. By this evening, the flow aloft will transition to a zonal
pattern with moderate to strong QG descent developing in the 06z-
12z window. Best snowfall on the west facing slopes of the Front
Range mountains will occur this evening once the trough axis
shifts to the east and the orographic component is more favorable.
The deepest moisture will be from 00z-06z. After 06z, the
moisture depth decreases somewhat as the subsidence and wind
increase. No Winter Weather Advisory planned for zones 33 and 34
as the window for moderate snowfall is relatively short, around 6
hrs. Main concern tonight however, will be the threat of strong
winds above timberline and the strengthening downslope component
in and near the foothills. The model shows more of a post-frontal
bora type wind event initially, in the 09-12z window. For this
reason, we have issued a High Wind Watch for the Front Range
Mountains, as well as areas in and near the Front Range Foothills
and Cheyenne Ridge. Those areas could experience some wind gusts
in the 65 to 75 mph range. Another round of even stronger winds is
expected on Monday afternoon. Reference the long term discussion
for those details. The strong winds will elevate the fire danger
in the watch area, but other factors are marginal and not enough
to hoist and Fire Weather Watch at this time.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

Subsidence with only light orographic snow is expected at 12Z
Monday, behind tonight's exiting trough. This will be short-lived
as the next quick moving trough and jet max track across Colorado.
Snow is expected to increase Monday morning with this system and
linger into Monday evening in the northern mountains. The main
focus with this system will be strong winds. Expect a brief
decrease in winds Monday morning before they pick up Monday
afternoon and evening. Northern Colorado ends up on the subsident
side of the jet Monday afternoon and evening. Models showing a
strong wind max 00Z Tuesday over southern Wyoming and northern
Colorado. The NAM and GFS show wind speeds topping out at 80-100
mph at 600mb, near ridge top level. Mountain wave activity should
transfer some momentum down, in and near the mountains and
foothills. Will mention wind gusts to around 90 mph for the
mountains and higher foothills. Above timberline, roughly 12,000
MSL, a few gusts to 100 mph can't be ruled out. Will issue a High
Wind Watch for the Front Range Mountains and Foothills as well as
areas along the Cheyenne Ridge. Winds will decrease late Monday
evening as this system shifts east of Colorado and a ridge starts
to move into the Great Basin. This ridge will bring mild and dry
conditions for Tuesday.

Good agreement among the models that some sort of ridging will
prevail across the Great Basin and Rockies from Wednesday into next
weekend. This will result in mild and dry conditions. Towards the
end of the week, models diverge somewhat. The ECMWF shows a weak
trough passing southeast through the ridge while the GFS keeps this
feature farther east. Regardless, both models are dry. Will have a
slight cool down for the wave the ECWMF shows for Friday and
Saturday.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon)

VFR conditions expected with broken mid and high level ceilings
above 10 thousand feet agl expected. Wind direction forecast is
proving difficult as gusty west winds out of the foothills will be
sporadic and not widespread. Where its not widespread and at lower
elevations (KDEN) the winds should trend to the east. Therefore,
the current light winds may go easterly by this afternoon, or they
could go northwest and stay northwest thorugh a push this evening
as cold air advection moves overhead with gusts to around 25 kts
at KDEN and KAPA. Gusts of 30-35 kts possible at kBJC this
evening. After 09z, should see a bit of a lull, but after 15z
Monday, winds will really pick up with gusts in the 35 to 50 kt
range.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Another mild afternoon can be expected over the northeast plains
of Colorado this afternoon. A fast moving Pacific system is
expected to bring light to moderate snowfall to the mountains
this afternoon and evening. The heaviest snowfall is expected in
the Park Range, with 5 to 9 inches through late this evening.
Lesser amounts of 1 to 4 inches elsewhere. Timing of the heaviest
snowfall rates looks to be between 4pm and midnight, as colder air
pushes in from the northwest. Wind gusts over the mountains will
be increasing this evening as well, from 25 mph to 50 mph by
midnight, which will create low visibility in blowing snow. This
may impact this evening's travel in the mountains. Travelers
should make sure to keep updated with the latest forecasts and
road conditions, and allow for extra time on the roads.

It will become very windy in the Front Range Mountains, as well as
locations in and near the Front Range Foothills and Cheyenne Ridge
starting around midnight. Peak gusts in the 65 to 75 mph range
will be possible in these areas, with gusts ranging from 35 to 45
mph elsewhere.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Windy conditions will continue Monday with even stronger winds
possible, especially by Monday afternoon and evening. Gusts up to
90 mph will be possible in the mountains and foothills. For the
eastern plains, wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph will be possible,
highest near the Wyoming border. In addition to the windy
conditions, snow is expected over the northern mountains where 2
to 6 inches of snow may occur. Farther south towards I-70,
snowfall is expected to be lighter.

The strong winds will decrease late Monday night and Tuesday with
a drying and warming trend through the rest of the week.
