482 WWUS45 KBOU 261116 WSWBOU URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE National Weather Service Denver CO 416 AM MST Tue Nov 26 2019 ...HEAVY SNOW SPREADING FROM THE FOOTHILLS ACROSS NORTHEASTERN COLORADO WITH WINDS INCREASING... .Heavy snow that fell overnight from the Front Range mountains across the Denver area and nearby plains spread across the rest of northeastern Colorado during the early morning hours. The snow will continue to spread eastward into Nebraska and northwest Kansas today. In the areas that have already received heavy snow, there were some road closures, and side streets were becoming impassable. Travel conditions will deteriorate quickly early this morning in areas further east, from Limon to the northeast corner of the state, as the heavy snow moves in. The snow will end in areas near the Wyoming border around midday. Around Denver heavy snow is expected this morning, then only light snow is expected this afternoon. Heavy snow will likely continue in areas south and west of Denver through at least the early afternoon. On the plains, the snow will end from west to east during the afternoon. Winds will increase with gusts of around 30 mph near the mountains, and up to 45 mph on the eastern plains, producing extensive drifting and limiting visibility at times. Blizzard conditions are expected over the eastern part of the plains and south and southeast of Denver for several hours during the middle of the day. Travel conditions will improve from west to east during the afternoon as the snow moves eastward and winds decrease late in the day. Travel along the Front Range and in northeastern Colorado is strongly discouraged until conditions improve later today. Additional road closures are likely, and travel may become impossible on rural roads and unplowed city streets. This storm may be historic in the Fort Collins and Loveland areas where 20 inches or more of snow is expected. That would put the storm near the top 5 of all snow events there. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 341 AM MST Tue Nov 26 2019 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 340 AM MST Tue Nov 26 2019 The general picture remains unchanged with the trough closing off as it digs into southeast Colorado and then western Kansas today. That initial intense snow band with 1-2 inch per hour rates associated with the front of the jet streak has shifted east of Denver, and we're in a short break, but the synoptic scale upslope is starting from Denver northward. Deep and stronger ENE flow will give Boulder and Larimer counties a second round of equally intense snow over the next 4-6 hours which could potentially double the existing snow amounts. That's a lot of snow! This area will drop south into Denver, mountain areas west/southwest of the city, and Douglas county during the morning hours, though it may not be quite as intense by then. We will also see the barrier jet redevelop which will back the very heavy snow eastward at least as far as I-25. Areas further east should see some uptick in snow again this morning with at least a steady 1/2 to 1 inch per hour rates. The snow will eventually fade from north to south starting late morning in Fort Collins and midday around Denver as the new snow band turns into the synoptic scale back side deformation band and moves east, and drier air undercuts the system in the northerly winds. This is all pretty well covered. Changes with this updat will include issuing a blizzard warning for the eastern part of the plains and Douglas and Elbert counties. Winds may be a bit marginal for true blizzard conditions, but with such a large amount of fluffy snow, there will be lots of drifting and the blowing snow combined with the falling snow will probably produce pretty low visibilities for several hours. Further west, we'll change the end time of the warning for southern Weld county and Denver to 2 PM as we expect accumulating snow to be done about then. We'll cancel the advisories in the mountain parks as snowfall in those areas should remain light. We did raise accumulations a bit more in the areas expected to get heavy snow this morning, generally over the foothills and eastward about 30 miles. Temperatures will drop sharply in wind sheltered areas tonight, but it does look like we'll get typical drainage winds by about midnight that will limit the cold in most places. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 340 AM MST Tue Nov 26 2019 On Wednesday, a dry and stable airmass will be over the forecast area as a ridge of high pressure aloft moves over the state. The ridge axis itself will shift into the Central Plains in the afternoon with an increasing southwesterly flow aloft developing Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. A weak disturbance embedded in the flow will clip the eastern fringe of the cwa late Wednesday night into Thanksgiving Day. In addition, enough moisture slipping into western CO will produce a chance of snow in the western portion of the forecast area, no pops in the middle which would include I-25 corridor. Moisture will continue to increase over western CO Thursday night, with the southwesterly flow favoring the zones 31 and 33 the most. A broad closed low will stretch along the west coast from central CA into Washington by 00z Friday. Late Thursday night into Friday night, the pattern become increasingly unsettled as a disturbance associated with this system will lift across north central and northeast CO. This will result in another another chance of snow over the area. At this time, it looks like western and northern portions of the forecast area would benefit the most. Snowfall amounts should be on the lighter side. By 12z Saturday however, this trough develops into a strong storm system as it lifts into South Dakota. The mid level flow will become northwesterly for Saturday, allowing for some orographic enhanced snowfall to continue in the mountains, with some residual snow showers along the northern border on exiting part of this system, with dry but continued cool weather elsewhere. On Sunday, a ridge of high pressure will again move over the state allowing for a dry airmass to spread across the entire forecast area. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night) Issued at 340 AM MST Tue Nov 26 2019 LIFR conditions in heavy snow are expected in the Denver area through 14z-16z, then lighter snow with IFR conditions until the snow ends 21-00z. This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central Colorado. .DAY ONE...Today and Tonight A significant snow storm will occur over the forecast area this afternoon through Tuesday. Snow will develop over the northern mountains by late morning and spread gradually southward. The snow will become heavy in the northern mountains by late afternoon and spread south toward the Interstate 70 mountain corridor and onto the plains around Fort Collins, Loveland, Longmont and Greeley by early evening. The heavy snow will reach the Denver area by late evening, and spread east across the plains overnight. The snow is expected to be very heavy in areas north of Denver during the evening and overnight hours, and this will be moving into Denver and the nearby foothills after midnight. Snow accumulations by sunrise Tuesday are expected to range from 8 to 18 inches in areas north of Denver, with 6 to 12 inches in the higher mountains and from Denver east across the plains. The foothills of Larimer and Boulder counties may have even heavier amounts. Travel will become difficult or impossible in the areas of heavy snow. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday Moderate to heavy snow will continue across the forecast area Tuesday morning, then decrease from west to east through the afternoon, and end early Tuesday evening. Total snowfall amounts will range from 8 to 16 inches across most of the area, with up to 22 inches from Boulder north to Fort Collins and up to 30 inches in the foothills of Larimer and Boulder counties. Strong northerly winds of 15 to 30 mph are expected over the plains later this evening through Tuesday creating blowing snow. Gusts to 40 mph over the eastern part of the plains may create near blizzard conditions Tuesday afternoon. Travel conditions will be difficult to impossible in the warning area Tuesday morning, then improve from west to east later Tuesday afternoon and early evening as the storm moves out. Wednesday looks pretty dry across the forecast area. An unsettled weather pattern is expected Thursday through Saturday with a good chance of snow and temperatures below seasonal normals. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
