.SHORT TERM...

A few rain showers have developed across west central Alabama this
hour. Weak isentropic lift around the 295K surface, a weak short
wave trough, enhanced column moisture have been just enough for
this weak activity to get going. It is not going to be cold enough
for any wintry precip associated with this activity. Expect this
activity to remain rather light and limited in duration and
eastward progression. Made some changes to the hourly temperature
trends with this enhancement in cloud cover.

Previous short-term discussion:Tonight through Tuesday Night.

This afternoon, there is a weakening surface high pressure ridge
across Alabama with westerly winds across the area. The low level
flow will turn southerly tonight into Monday with dew points and
overall moisture set to increase ahead of our next system. We have
had considerable middle and high cloudiness today thanks to an
upper level shortwave moving across the state. The clouds are
expected to push east by late this evening which will allow us to
dip down into the 30s during the late night hours tonight. With
onshore warmer flow for Monday expected, daytime high temperatures
will be milder from the middle 50s to the lower 60s. Big changes
are a brewing after that.

The main forecast changes in our winter system time frame will be
that of an earlier arrival of precipitation. The 00z Euro threw a
monkey wrench into the mix by coming in with considerably less
moisture. The consensus was that this was in error/underdone. Kept
with the more consistently moist GFS. The GFS also brings in the
precipitation sooner with our hires models now coming in agreeing
with a quicker onset. For the most part, otherwise, our forecast
is similar as rain changes over to snow as the column becomes
saturated and quickly cools with very little if any warm nose
aloft in the soundings. So, as the rain changes over, there should
be little if any sleet (or quick) between rain to snow. Or we
could still have a rain/snow mix initially due to shallow warmer
temperatures right near the surface.

We have issued a winter storm watch from Tuesday 06z until 18z.
Are we expecting snow to last that entire time in any one county?
No, but to avoid confusion and to account for the possibility of
future model runs slowing the timing back some, we will leave a
larger window of opportunity. Please see our timing graphicast for
more specific windows on our web page. Amount expected will be up
to around 2 inches. There may be some isolated higher amounts.
Initially with temperatures above freezing, the snow may not
accumulate unless we have a stronger burst or until the surface
temperatures lower enough. Some areas in the southern part of the
watch area may be under/close to 2 inches, but with the similar
impacts though to travel. With temperatures dropping quickly, and
the event not until Tuesday, adjustments are inevitable. We are
erring on the side of caution and potential impacts to folks. The
winter storm watch is generally along and north of a Linden to
Clanton to Wedowee line for now.

By Tuesday afternoon, the cold and drier air is here, we should
see some sunshine before dark and that will help get rid of
"some" of the moisture, but whatever is left will freeze on
surfaces overnight which will make for hazardous travel for some
areas as overnight lows Tuesday night into early Wednesday will be
in the upper teens to the middle 20s.

Wednesday through Saturday.

--Stretch of dry weather with limited chance of late-week showers;
moderating temperatures into the weekend--

Chilly temperatures continue Wednesday/Thursday due to the post-
frontal air mass and glancing low-level advection around the polar
low toward our north. A milder air mass is expected to nudge into
the region for Friday/Saturday as the polar low moves into the
Quebec and Newfoundland Province region of Canada, and ridging
builds upstream of Alabama. Forecast deterministic and ensemble
guidance show low agreement with a (possible) impulse on Friday.
I've maintained an increase in cloudiness and low-end shower chances
during this time frame.

06Z TAF Discussion.

VFR conditions will dominate the period. Although VFR is expected,
the boundary layer winds have become southerly and dew points may
hold steady. Therefore, some patchy ground fog may develop across
Central Alabama. Added a tempo for brief MVFR fog at All sites
except BHM around sunrise.

A mixture of clouds will be present Monday, some 5-7k ft, some
around 9-10k ft, and cirrus. There may be some ceilings here and
there, but all VFR. The next storm system will be approaching
Central Alabama by the tail end of the period. Restrictive
ceilings, rain, snow, and some reduced vis is anticipated between
06-18z Tuesday.

Rain free conditions are expected through Monday afternoon, and
minimum relative humidity values should stay above critical
values. The next chance of precipitation arrives Monday night
through Tuesday with the passage of a strong cold front. There are

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the counties served by the
National Weather Service office in Birmingham.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight.

Due to recent rainfall, minor river flooding is expected along
portions of the Black Warrior River. Please refer to river
statements for details.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

A strong cold front is expected to bring a transition from rain to
snow Monday night and Tuesday morning. The transition could begin as
early as midnight in the northwest and progress southeastward
through the morning hours. Snow accumulations of one half inch to 2
inches are anticipated. Some isolated higher amounts are also possible.
Impacts to travel appear likely near and north of a line from Linden
to Clanton to Wedowee. Snowfall amounts and impacts may still be
adjusted. Stay tuned to the latest forecast issuances concerning the
snow impacts.

Minor river flooding is expected to continue along portions of the
Black Warrior River through Monday. Please refer to river statements
for details.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Activation of storm spotters and emergency management may be needed
late Monday into Tuesday morning.
