For 18Z Aviation.

.SYNOPSIS...

A shortwave trough was quickly moving east over the Deep South
region this morning in fast zonal flow aloft. A broad positively-
tilted longwave trough extended from near Hudson Bay Canada
southwest through the High Plains and into Colorado. A shortwave
ridge was present over the Rio Grande Valley of southwest Texas
ahead of a closed upper low near central Baja California.

A potent surface arctic front extended from the Colorado Front
Range south into northern Texas. This front extended northeast
through Oklahoma and into southern Missouri and stretched further
northeast roughly along the Ohio River Valley into the New England
region.

The 11/12Z BMX sounding contained a sharp surface inversion up to
near 960 mb followed by a strong subsidence inversion around 885
mb. Ample dry air was present higher aloft. Winds were from the
southwest off of the surface to near 600 mb up to 30 kts while a
more zonal flow prevailed above 600 mb with speeds increasing to
around 90 kts around 180mb.

.SHORT TERM...

Through Tonight.

Minor adjustments made to sky, wind, PoP and temperature trends
with high level clouds arriving from the west will continue to
overspread the forecast area for the rest of the day. Surface
winds will increase from the south and southwest this afternoon
and evening as the arctic front approaches from the northwest.
Expect rain chances to increase from mid afternoon into early
evening far west/northwest followed by high chances for rain this
evening through overnight from west to east.

Highs today will range from the mid 60's far north to the low
70's south. Low-level temperatures will quickly fall this evening
through Tuesday morning as the arctic front slides southeast
across the area. Expect temperatures to fall into the upper 20's
far north to the low 30's central before all the precipitation
ends near and north of the I-20 corridor where rain mixed with
sleet and freezing rain will be possible before the precipitation
ends Tuesday morning.

A freeze warning will go into effect roughly along and northwest
of a line from Demopolis to Calera to Anniston at 3 am Tuesday
morning and will expand southeast to include areas along and north
of a line from Selma to Wetumpka to Auburn at 3 pm Tuesday. The
rest of the forecast area will be included in the Freeze Warning
at 8 pm Tuesday night. The freeze warning will remain in effect
for the entire area until 9 am Wednesday morning.

.LONG TERM...
/Updated at 0315 AM CST Mon Nov 11 2019/

Tuesday through Sunday.

Precipitation should be ongoing across much of the area at 6 AM
Tuesday in association with frontal lift and approaching 500 mb
shortwave. Compared to 24 hours ago, models have trended a few
degrees colder with the airmass behind the Arctic front, while
delaying the end of the precipitation due to an increase in omega
above 700 mb. With surface temperatures of 29-32F and a shallow
cold layer at 925 mb reaching -6C, rain changing to freezing rain
and ice pellets appears to be a possibility in a narrow band near
and northwest of I-59 from 4 AM to 8 AM. The northwest extent of
the precipitation is a point of disagreement within hi-res and
global models, and the precipitation could end sooner than
expected. NAM forecast soundings indicate saturated profiles up
to 250 mb, suggesting a potential for brief bursts of ice pellets.
There would be a very low, non-zero chance of impacts if this
occurs, but we are not officially expecting any impacts at this
time. Precipitation will quickly end from northwest to southeast
after 8 AM and be completely out of our forecast area by noon.

As the unusually cold airmass settles in across the region,
record-tying or record-breaking temperatures are possible on
Wednesday morning. Temperatures should moderate on Wednesday
afternoon and into Thursday as warm advection occurs ahead of an
upstream shortwave. Models are still in disagreement over the
evolution of this system, and the northward extent of potential
rainfall remains uncertain. Only a slight chance of showers was
added to our southeast counties for Thursday night. The associated
shortwave should move to our east on Friday and Saturday, leading
to cool and dry conditions through the weekend.

18Z TAF Discussion.

The general terminal forecast trend has been held intact this
period. Increasing cloudiness can be expected through the
afternoon and into early evening, but ceilings will generally
remain above 5k ft through at least 02z. Winds will be south to
southwest generally 5-10kts, but a few gusts to around 20kts may
sporadically occur.

An arctic cold front moves into Central Alabama this evening with
a wind shift occurring around 02-03z to the northwest.
Simultaneously, restrictive ceilings invade the area around 025
with VCSH. Much of the rain will be post-frontal and expect the
best rain chances from 04z-13z, rather rapidly moving from west
to east. Ceilings will drop into the 015 neighborhood in light to
moderate rain. Winds will also pick up, with northerly winds
becoming 13-16kts gusting to 25-30 kts. There will be a brief
period where the rain may mix with or change to some ice pellets.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the counties served by the
National Weather Service office in Birmingham.

.DAY ONE...Outlook through Tonight.

Temperatures will drop near or below freezing by 6 am, generally
along and north of a line from Altoona to Gardendale to Ethelsville.
Lows in the freeze area will be 27 to 32 degrees.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday.

Temperatures will continue to fall below freezing through mid
morning with areas along and north of a Geiger to Calera to Heflin.
Temperatures will rise some by the afternoon, however, a few
locations in the far north may not get above freezing.

A widespread and significant freeze will occur across all of Central
Alabama Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Lows are forecast to
range from 17 degrees in the north to 27 in the southeast. These
temperatures would end the frost and freeze program for this fall
season.
