Continuing to monitor the development of heavy banded snow. Latest
12z models, including the higher resolution RAP13 continue to
trend the same as the global solutions. That is, there will be an
area of heavier banded snow from near Killdeer to Dickinson, from
around Washburn into Bismarck, and Jamestown through Oakes.
Essentially, portions of southwest, most of south central and
through the James River Valley. Timing on this would be between
21z through 07z, becoming enhanced from west to east, and then
ending from west to eas during the above mentioned timeframe.
Contemplating the need for a possible warning if anticipated snow
amounts reach 6 inches or greater. This will highly depend on the
strength and duration of the instability and resultant deeper
ageostrophic response through the column. We are currently
advertising 4 to 6 inches in the area where the heavier bands are
forecast, so not real excited at this time to change things to 7
inches or 8 inches unless we see a long lasting signal that we
will have widespread higher amounts above 6 inches. Impacts will
not be much different from 5 to 6 inches, verses 6 or maybe 7
inches. However, will continue to monitor for changes per latest
impacts and potential winter weather headline changes.

.UPDATE Issued at 945 AM CST Sun Dec 8 2019

Latest water vapor imagery shows a leading 700mb shortwave
scooting through central ND resulting in light snow, while the
main 500mb shortwave is just west of Glasgow. It will be this
latter shortwave that mesoscale banding is likely, but in question
right now is the strength and duration. First, approximating
instability for upright convection using the 700-500mb lapse
rates, values barely become conditionally unstable, meaning lapse
rate values at or greater than 6C/Km. It would appear that the overlap
of the strongest Q-Vector Convergence (500-300mb) with low level
frontogenesis (850-700mb) is not directly coupled, but is lagging
behind a bit. However, a cross section taken from Williston to
Oakes shows EPV (Saturated Equivalent Potential Vorticity) around
zero, which is just above the main frontogenetical forcing layer.
The spacing between the saturated theta-E lines does increase in
height which also supports lower stability and may result in a
greater response to the frontogenetical circulation and heavier
bands of snow. Will continue to monitor the trends this morning,
but previous forecast is on track.

UPDATE Issued at 619 AM CST Sun Dec 8 2019

Some of the CAM models suggest a more robust forcing mechanism
for heavier precipitation for central North Dakota this afternoon
and evening. Frontogenetic forcing is the main culprit at play
today. The RAP model has been increasing vertical motion across
central north Dakota with the FG forcing increasing. We may have
to increase snow amounts and consider a possible upgrade to a
winter storm warning for portions of central North dakota later
today. For now we will see if more consensus appears in the CAM
models.

We added more freezing drizzle this morning central where some
reports on roads suggest some glaze has formed across central
North Dakota. This will diminish as the increasing moisture aloft
allows ice crystals to form, by mid morning.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Short term concerns will focus on winter weather and snow amounts.
Global models are in good agreement bringing an h500 trough
across the northern plains today and tonight, bringing snow across
northwest North Dakota first, spreading southeast through the day
into Tonight. The GEFS plumes are also solidifying into a narrow
spread of solutions as well.

In addition to the broad scale lift expected with the h500 trough
passage, CAM models are showing east-west oriented frontogenetic
forcing around 700 mb across central North Dakota beginning at 18z
and continuing for about 3 to 4 hours. As a result we expect banding
with the possibility of heavy snow, perhaps one inch an hour,
shortly after noon through 6 pm across central North Dakota.

So overall we expect a swath of 4 to 6 inch snow amounts from the
northwest to the southeast today, with the highest amounts generally
along and and north of I94 over western North dakota and along and
south of i94 across the east.

The overall progressive nature of this system, the speed it's moving
though the region, will be the limiting factor in snow amounts. So
we have topped the snow to about 6 inches. An isolated 7 or 8 inch
amount would depend on the intensity of the FG forcing and speed of
the system, but confidence is low forecasting that much at this
time.

Increasing winds to 15 to 30 mph will create patchy to areas of
blowing snow later this afternoon and tonight.

Temperatures will be steady or slowly falling today, and tonight's
lows will fall below zero over all but the far southwest. Wind
chills close to 20 below are possible north central and east.

Tonight the snow will gradually taper off and end.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

After tonight, The extended will feature much colder weather. The
next chances for some snow will be Thursday and Saturday, however
confidence is low on snow amounts at this time. The coldest
temperatures will be Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning as arctic
high pressure moves over the region. The expected lows are zero to
near 20 below. Morning wind chills of 25 to 30 below are expected
central and east both days.

After this a gentle warmup into the 20s east to mid to upper 30s
west is forecast for Thursday and Friday, then a tad cooler Saturday
as a cold front moves through.

Heavy snow is expected to impact KDIK/KBIS/KJMS, from west to east
between 21z Sunday through 07z. Expect cigs in the MVFR to IFR
range, with vsbys in the VLIFR category in heavy snow. Cigs and
Vsbys will improve at these terminals after 09z Monday, then
deteriorate again late Monday afternoon as another slug of stratus
arrives behind a cold front. KXWA and KMOT will continue to
experience light snow Sunday afternoon/evening resulting in MVFR
cigs and IFR vsbys until 23z-04z, then improve to MVFR and low VFR
cigs and VFR vsbys.
