Issued at 1232 AM CDT Wed Oct 9 2019 Current satellite and surface weather observations show low clouds moving into northwest North Dakota, behind an advancing cold front that is draped southwest to northeast across western and central North Dakota. Wind gusts behind the front are now approaching 30 kts, which is much less than the NBM. Therefore, the max of all models was used for the wind forecast, which matches observations much better than the NBM. Light snow is falling across northeast Montana, and is moving slowly into northwest North Dakota. Expecting light snow to move into the Williston area shortly after 12z this morning. UPDATE Issued at 1021 PM CDT Tue Oct 8 2019 The cold front is advancing south and east a bit quicker than model guidance has suggested. Also, winds behind the front have been a bit stronger. Made some adjustments to account for these trends. Otherwise, the forecast remains on track. UPDATE Issued at 858 PM CDT Tue Oct 8 2019 We have extended the Winter Storm Watch across central into southeast North Dakota to cover the second round of snow. It is now in effect from late Wednesday night through early Saturday morning. Accumulating snow will reach its peak during the Wednesday evening through Thursday morning time frame. Temperatures will fall into the 20s across the area Wednesday night. Accumulating snow looks to continue Thursday afternoon through Thursday night across all but northwest North Dakota as a very large Colorado low develops immediately downstream of an upper low centered over Colorado. With strong synoptic scale forcing and mid level frontogenesis, moderate snow should be easy to sustain. In fact, some heavy snow bands may develop, especially east of the Missouri River. It will also be windy Wednesday into Friday, which will lead to blowing snow. QPF amounts from the latest NAM/GFS/EURO/NBM/WPC all agree fairly well for the Wednesday through Thursday night timeframe. A mix of NBM/WPC QPF/snowfall amounts were used for the forecast during this time, which currently gives a wide swath of 6 to 13 inches of total snow from southwest North Dakota into northeast North Dakota. Northwest and north central North Dakota are shaping up to see less snow, around 2 to 5 inches. Regardless of exact snowfall amounts, expect significant impacts to travel. While uncertainty remains for the weekend, it does appear we are in for more winter weather and it could be very significant. The 12z run of the GFS/EURO continue the westward trend of the 06z run. Unfortunately, this means both models have the Colorado low stalling out over eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota due to a downstream ridge blocking the flow. With the low barely moving Friday through Saturday, very impressive snowfall amounts are possible for Friday through Saturday, mainly across the eastern half of North Dakota. The latest GFS/ECMWF are producing a large area a foot or more of additional snow this weekend for the entire eastern half of the state, with snowfall amounts dropping off rapidly to the west. Additionally, a 50-70 kt 850mb northerly jet also sets up over eastern North Dakota while snow is falling, suggesting blizzard conditions may be possible... especially for the James River Valley area.
