Area Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED National Weather Service Bismarck ND 338 AM CST Fri Mar 8 2019 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 338 AM CST Fri Mar 8 2019 Highlight in the short term period is the upgrade from the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning across the southern counties and through the James River Valley, while a Winter Weather Advisory has been hoisted across the remaining portion of the previous Winter Storm Watch area. The Winter Weather Advisory essentially runs along and south of Highway 200 where it then meets up with the Winter Storm Warning mentioned above. Latest water vapor imagery shows a split flow with the northern branch and associated upper Low seen circulating over southern British Columbia this morning, while the southern branch/upper low was over central California. Through the short term and into the long term period, as the the northern stream upper low ejects through southern Canada, it remains detached/far enough apart from the southern branch upper low. Hence the focus tonight through Saturday will solely rely on the dynamics and corresponding snowfall amounts from the track of the southern branch upper low. For today, a transitory mid/upper level ridge will shift across western/central ND with warm air advection, leading to an increase in mid/high clouds west into portions of central ND. Fog/Stratus imagery loop shows a solid line of stratus from Hettinger to Bismarck, and from Garrison to Westhope. There will be some erosion in the stratus this morning across central ND as low level winds become west to northwest and advect in drier air, however as the HRRR low level RH fields indicate, stratus will remain across the James River Valley today. Highs will range from 22F at Rolla to 32F over southwest ND. Snow develops this evening 00z-06z southwest, and spreads into south central ND 06z-12z Saturday. Lows tonight mostly between 10F and 20F. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 338 AM CST Fri Mar 8 2019 As mentioned in the short term period, the focus Saturday becomes the track of the upper 700-500mb upper Low now over central California. As it scoots east Saturday, the 700mb low remains progressive while and mostly concentrated over Nebraska. However it does elongate out and reach southern North Dakota during the day Saturday, where synoptic scale ascent is maximized within the dendritic growth zone per NAM/GFS BUFKIT soundings. This results in periods of moderate to at times heavy snowfall Saturday morning and into the afternoon, especially south. Within the warning snowfall, expect mainly 6 to 8 over far south central into most of the James River Valley. The advisory area can expect 3 to 6 inches of snowfall through Saturday night. Gusty northwest winds (20 to 30 mph) will accompany the snow Saturday afternoon and evening, with patchy blowing snow. Blowing snow and reduced visibilities would likely be worse if temperatures were much colder than our projected highs in the mid 20s Saturday afternoon. Winds have to be much stronger at these warmer temperatures to have a significant impact on Blowing snow and resultant low visibilities.
