Issued at 1237 AM CST Wed Feb 6 2019 For this update, mainly tweaked precipitation chances and QPF based on the latest trends, high resolution guidance, and observations. UPDATE Issued at 934 PM CST Tue Feb 5 2019 For this updated, made some adjustments to PoPs to account for current trends and the latest model guidance. A mid-level wave that can be seen on GOES-16 channel 9 water vapor imagery is bringing a "burst" of light to moderate snow across south central North Dakota late this evening. This is not being handled well by models. The 00Z suite of guidance that has arrived so far looks very similar to previous iterations. Two notable differences are a slight westward shift for the heaviest snow on Wednesday and light snow persisting through Wednesday morning in far northwest North Dakota. UPDATE Issued at 640 PM CST Tue Feb 5 2019 Overall, the forecast remains on track. For this updated, made some minor adjustments to PoPs and blended in current observations and trends. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday) Issued at 257 PM CST Tue Feb 5 2019 Another upper level shortwave trough is approaching from Montana and will interact with a baroclinic zone in between an arctic surface high pressure area centered over Manitoba, and a lee side surface low over eastern Wyoming. This impulse will bring widespread light snow to all of western and central North Dakota this afternoon through tonight. Accumulations generally of 1 to 3 inches will be possible. The highest totals will likely be seen across northern North Dakota. Regarding wind chills; Warm air advection should give us a brief reprieve from wind chill headlines through most of the night. There are a few locations that may dip below advisory criteria, but conditions are marginal enough tonight that we decided not to complicate headlines more by issuing an advisory tonight, cancelling it tomorrow morning and then reissuing another one for tomorrow night. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday) Issued at 257 PM CST Tue Feb 5 2019 The long term forecast period is characterized by the continued arctic air outbreak and chances of accumulating snow on Wednesday through Thursday morning. Yet another shortwave rotates around the base of the upper level trough Wednesday through Thursday morning and develops a band of snow that could potentially lead to more significant accumulations across the southern James River Valley. 12z GEFS plumes have clustered generally in the 0.3 to 0.4 inch range for liquid QPF at Jamestown with the highest amounts favored further south. We are starting to see some weak banding signals in the models which further complicates the forecast and actually introduces more uncertainty. There is a decent possibility of widespread 3 to 6 inches across the southern James Valley, but with the potential for banding some locations could see several inches more than that. Additionally, winds could be strong enough Wednesday night/Thursday morning that blowing and drifting snow could become an issue. Therefore, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued. Arctic air remains in place over our area during the long term period, with another reinforcing shot of dangerous cold behind the Wednesday/Thursday system. The end of the work week is shaping up to be the coldest part the week. Temperatures will fall to the 20 to 35 below zero range by Thursday night. During this time frame, wind chill values will likely approach 40 to 55 below across much of western and central ND. As the arctic high moves southeast on Friday, another western CONUS trough sets up once again and we transition back to southwest flow aloft by Saturday morning, which helps to moderate temperatures a bit with widespread highs right around or above zero on Saturday and Sunday. Chances of light snow increase again Saturday and Sunday, but model agreement is poor on wave timing and details. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night) Issued at 1237 AM CST Wed Feb 6 2019 Light snow continues to fall over much of central and northern North Dakota and will drift north while diminishing into Wednesday morning. Ceilings are generally VFR but sporadic reductions in Visibility will continue to create scattered MFVR and isolated IFR conditions.
