With winds north central greatly diminished from earlier, went
ahead and removed Ward and Renville counties from the high wind
warning, and Bottineau and McHenry from the winter weather adv for
blowing snow. Additional removals are likely over the next few
hours.

No major changes to the forecast at this time. Expect to see
winter and wind headlines downscaled after midnight. Winds
continue to be strong/gusty west and south central, with winds
tapering off north central. Will leave headlines be for now at
this late evening hour. Will maintain isolated/scattered snow
showers through tonight.

Issued at 811 PM CST Sun Jan 27 2019

Strong winds have failed to make it into the Turtle Mountain
region or the western Devils Lake basin area, so after
collaboration with WFO Grand Forks will convert the blizzard to a
winter weather adv for my northeast through 12Z. Converted
Renville, Ward, and Sheridan counties to a high wind warning
through 12Z with the warm temperatures today crusting their snow
pack. Products will be sent shortly.

Issued at 630 PM CST Sun Jan 27 2019

No changes to headlines with this product issuance. Winds ramping
up as advertised with the strong pressure rises moving south
across west/central North Dakota. Have had several wind gusts over
60 MPH along with a few reports of power outages. Band of snow
accompanying the front is resulting in blowing snow and reduced
visibilities, so have inserted blowing snow with the snow band as
it moves south early to mid evening.

POPs were modified based on latest radar and high res guidance.

Will take another look at headlines later this evening.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday)

Blizzard conditions, very strong winds, and light freezing rain
accumulations associated with a strong Alberta Clipper highlight a
very tricky short term forecast period.

Mid-level vorticity max is approaching northwest North Dakota
from southeastern Saskatchewan generally on schedule. The initial
band of snow that put down a coat of 1 to 2 inches has mostly
moved into eastern North Dakota, associated with an eastward
moving warm front. At the surface an arctic cold front extending
west from a deepening surface low south of Regina has entered the
far northwest and will quickly sweep southeast across the state.

Behind this front, very strong cold air advection and 13 to 16 mb
3-hour pressure rises will contribute to very windy conditions
across the forecast area. Thus the need for high wind warnings
across the west/parts of the central and the blizzard warning
across the Turtle Mountains and James River Valley. 2pm MST
observations show 40+ mph wind gusts across portions of Divide
county and these winds will gradually increase in magnitude and
spread south and east. The Clipper will race across the state
overnight and winds should be greatly diminished near sunrise, so
decided to change the expiration times for all warnings at 12z.
The overnight shift may have to decide if a winter weather
advisory will be needed for blowing snow after the blizzard
warning expires. Along the front, a band of snow is likely to
develop in an area characterized by steep lapse rates and strong
upward motion in the dendritic growth zone. This band will likely
produce some heavy snowfall rates late this afternoon and into the
night across parts of the southern James River Valley.

Finally, it was decided a winter weather advisory was needed for
Emmons, Burleigh, McLean, Mercer, Oliver, Morton, Grant, and Sioux
counties for ongoing areas of freezing rain. We've received
reports of icy roads and guidance suggests we will continue to
see the potential for light ice accumulations over the next couple
of hours. This advisory will bridge the gap in these areas to the
high wind warning which begins a 00z.

Behind the front, much colder air will filter in from the arctic
airmass situated over Canada and Monday will see highs in the
single digits and teens above zero. Winds will continue to
subside, but lingering breezy conditions will keep the potential
for patchy blowing snow in the forecast across the east through
the day.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)

Life threatening wind chills and some of the coldest weather of
the season is expected Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Wednesday morning looks to be especially frigid with widespread
lows in the 20s and 30s below zero and wind chill values from near
30 below zero across the southwest, to near 60 below zero across
parts of the east.

breezy side for Monday. Scattered snow showers will also continue

shower.
