Issued at 644 AM CST Sun Dec 29 2019 We added areas of fog to the forecast in western ND through 18 UTC with this update in respect to observational trends, which reveal reduced visibilities where a low stratus deck is intersecting with higher terrain. We've chosen to handle impacts of the fog with a Special Weather Statement versus a Dense Fog Advisory since we're not confident in spatiotemporal extent of lowest visibilities. Otherwise, regional radar imagery suggests intensifying snow in eastern ND in line with earlier expectations, and we still expect this to spread westward into the James River valley through the morning. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 429 AM CST Sun Dec 29 2019 Confidence in the details of snowfall amounts has increased area- wide with this forecast release, including along the western gradient of snow in south central ND. We continue to expect impacts from the winter storm today and tonight, and it remains possible that some portions of the James River valley and adjacent south central ND could still need to be upgraded to a Blizzard Warning in the next 6 to 12 hours, though confidence in widespread and prolonged blizzard conditions was not high enough to make any adjustments to existing headlines as of this writing. Surface low pressure is located in northwestern Iowa early this morning with broad and notable 3-hour pressure falls to its north centered across MN, indicative of broad warm air advection driving ascent across the region and supportive of northward movement of the low into southwestern MN today. The 00 UTC global model suite and most recent ensembles agree well on QPF totals for the rest of the event and ensemble plumes suggest that the predictability horizon has been reached even at Bismarck, where even the mixed- physics WPC superensemble guidance has fallen into agreement in the most likely outcome being 2-4 inches of additional snowfall within the Winter Weather Advisory area. This is largely because the most recent ECMWF ensemble set -- which had favored a more western extent of heavy snow for days -- shifted eastward such that only two of the ~45 member WPC superensemble/PWPF guidance model inputs exceed the 4 inch mark at Bismarck/Mandan today and tonight. Note that forecast soundings from the 00 UTC NAM and GFS continue to suggest midlevel drying developing across central ND today, which would reduce snowfall production and could result in it completely ceasing for a time. However, model soundings also suggest saturation with respect to ice could be close enough for continued production of light snow from Bismarck/Mandan to Harvey through the day, and the 00 UTC ECMWF -- which matches overnight radar trends well and which is lighter than its prior cycles -- suggests light snow could continue through the day. Thus, we showed a reduction in PoPs from 100% this morning to 60% this afternoon in the Winter Weather Advisory area, but chose to keep them in the likely threshold at this juncture. Meanwhile, ensemble and more recent RAP/HRRR guidance is also closely clustered in the Winter Storm Warning area centered on the Ashley, Steele, Carrington, Jamestown, LaMoure, and Ellendale areas with an expectation of 8-12 inches of additional snowfall today and tonight. Frontogenesis based near 850 mb resulted in an enhancement of snowfall in eastern ND between 06 and 09 UTC, and then a subtle decrease in intensity, but guidance suggests there will be additional frontogenetical forcing upticks today. Even if they are transient, strong QG-forcing for ascent driven by large- scale synoptic vertical motion including broad warm air advection will support enough QPF for heavy snow in those areas. A blend of NBM and MOS-based wind guidance suggests sustained speeds near 30 kt at times today, and inspection of the Canadian blowing snow model suggested blizzard criteria could be met, but the expected snow density and surface temperatures suggest a bit stronger wind speeds are required for widespread blizzard conditions. Recent RAP forecast soundings at Ashley and Ellendale suggest gusts closer to 45 kt developing, and if that comes to fruition than an upgrade to Blizzard Warning will be required. However, other guidance is not quite as strong with winds, and HREF-based blizzard probabilities which take into account visibility reductions from heavy falling snow and forecast gusts from CAMs were less than 30%, too. Thus, in collaboration with NWS Aberdeen and Grand Forks we have chosen to hold off on upgrading to Blizzard Warnings for now, though we will closely monitor trends and upgrade later if necessary. By tonight, frontogenetical circulations are forecast to diminish but broad ascent associated with continued warm air advection aloft and a related TROWAL will cause light snow to linger. The snow may actually move westward and be centered on the Bismarck and Mandan area by tonight given the expected forcing mechanisms, but amounts will be light by that point. The surface pressure gradient will remain strong and thus areas of blowing snow will continue. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 429 AM CST Sun Dec 29 2019 On Monday, conditions will slowly improve during the day as the stacked midlatitude cyclone slowly shifts into the Great Lakes. However, lingering light snow and gusty winds could result in a continuation of winter weather impacts in south central ND and the James River valley, so later trends may dictate some extension in time of winter weather headlines past their existing expiration at 12 UTC Monday. Otherwise, the 00 UTC global models support a warming trend this week with NBM-based highs still in the 30s to around 40 F across western ND Tuesday through Friday. Low-predictability shortwave trough passages could yield some light precipitation and gusty winds at times, and given expected thermal profiles we may have to contend with mixed-phase precipitation forecast challenges.
