Overall, additional accumulation amounts through Saturday have been lowered a bit west and the gradient tightened further across central North Dakota. Currently, it appears the heaviest snow and biggest impacts will be felt east of a line from Minot to Bismarck late tonight through Saturday afternoon. Blizzard conditions are most likely from the Turtle Mountains, down through the Devils Lake Basin into the northern James River Valley. An upgrade to a Blizzard warning for these areas is possible this afternoon. UPDATE Issued at 841 AM CDT Thu Oct 10 2019 For this update...lowered QPF/Snow amounts for most locations due to the slower transition to snow and dry slot working into the region. Utilized an ensemble blend for QPF that ends up toward the highest end of the GEFS ensemble members and around the mean of WPC ensemble members. This yielded a forecast around the average of most deterministic model guidance and generally lowered snowfall amounts by a few inches across most locations. UPDATE Issued at 632 AM CDT Thu Oct 10 2019 Current radar observations and surface weather observations continue to show a band of light to moderate snow across central North Dakota, with light snow lingering across southwest North Dakota. Gusty northerly to northwesterly winds also continue, leading to patchy blowing snow in areas where enough snow has accumulated. Rain showers are moving northward across the James River Valley, and should be switching over to snow showers later this morning. No significant changes were needed to the forecast for this update. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 451 AM CDT Thu Oct 10 2019 An impactful winter storm system will continue to impact southwest and central North Dakota tonight and tonight with accumulating snow and windy conditions. Snow has ended across northwest North Dakota. A very slow moving band of moderate snow was being observed across central North Dakota early this morning, with light snow continuing across southwest North Dakota. The band of moderate snow is moving eastward even slower than expected, and is finally just beginning to move into the Bismarck area. This band of moderate snow should be capable of producing a few inches of snow within 3 to 5 hours, with a more gradual accumulation of snow expected this afternoon and evening as light snow lingers. Light snow lingers across central North Dakota tonight as synoptic scale forcing increases dramatically and the center of the surface low moves up into northern Minnesota while the upper low moves across the Dakotas. Although only an additional inch of two of snow is expected today and tonight across southwest and north central North Dakota, 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected across south central North Dakota through the James River Valley. Locally higher amounts will be possible. WPC QPF/snowfall amounts were used for the forecast, which does not vary much from the latest iteration of NBM. Snow ratios were limited to 12:1 as forecast soundings suggest temperatures may bit a bit too warm for snow ratios of 15:1 or higher. CONSMOS was used for the wind forecast, with northerly winds sustained between 20 and 30 mph expected today and tonight. Gusts to 40 mph are possible. This will lead to patchy blowing snow in areas that have accumulated enough snow on the ground. Regardless of snowfall amounts, expect dangerous travel conditions today and tonight across southwest and central North Dakota. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 451 AM CDT Thu Oct 10 2019 Significant additional snowfall accumulations are expected across portions of central North Dakota Friday and Saturday, along with even windier conditions. Expect highs mainly in the 30s throughout the long term forecast, with lows mainly in the 20s. The 00z NAM/GFS/EURO agree quite well on the storm track for Friday and Saturday, with the surface low stalling out across northwest Minnesota due to a downstream ridge located across the northeast U.S. blocking the low from pushing eastward out of the eastern Northern Plains region. This signal has been consistent over the past few days, with only minor shifts in the storm track from run to run. Nevertheless, these minor shifts drastically change the snowfall forecast for places like Minot, Washburn, Bismarck, and all the areas in between. This is because these areas are right on the edge of what looks to be a very tight snowfall gradient. A slight shift westward in the storm track would give these areas significant amounts of snow, while a slight shift east would lead to hardly any snow at all. Therefore, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for these areas until details become clearer regarding where exactly the tight snowfall gradient will set up. Confidence is much higher for significant snowfall accumulations to the east of Minot and Bismarck, with the James River Valley up through the Turtle Mountains under the gun for an additional 1 to 2 feet of snow this weekend with locally higher amounts. Therefore, the Winter Storm Watch for these areas has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning, which now extends through Saturday afternoon. Even windier conditions are expected this weekend, with wind gusts possibly exceeding 55 mph in some areas. This may create blizzard conditions in the warned area. The low finally pushes out of the Northern Plains on Sunday as the downstream ridge breaks down. At this time, Sunday and Monday mainly dry across western and central North Dakota with chilly temperatures lingering. Chances for snow may return on Tuesday as a clipper system moves through the area. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday morning) Issued at 632 AM CDT Thu Oct 10 2019 The 12z TAF period continues to be highlighted by gusty northerly to northwesterly winds and widespread light to moderate snow. Once snow begins to accumulate, patchy blowing snow will also become a concern. Snow has ended for KISN, but will continue at KDIK, KMOT, and KBIS today. Snow may mix with rain at KJMS this morning, before changing over to all snow by mid morning. Although snow may end at KDIK and KMOT this afternoon, it appears light snow will linger at KBIS and KJMS.
