Issued at 1230 PM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019 Nudged highs up once again, mainly across the Missouri River Valley and west as widespread temperatures in the mid to upper 30s are already being observed across the west, likely enhanced by downsloping. The only other update was to hold on to patchy fog for a bit longer across portions of the south central as webcams continue to show some lower visibilities in the area. UPDATE Issued at 940 AM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019 Bumped up afternoon highs a bit using a blend of the previous forecast and the latest consensus MOS guidance. Fog has also continued to linger a bit longer than originally anticipated so extended mention of fog south central through 15z and issued a new SPS mentioning fog through 16z. Otherwise, blended the latest observations to the going forecast. UPDATE Issued at 647 AM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019 Latest fog/stratus loop shows the area of low clouds and fog now beginning to show signs of dissipating across Burleigh and southern Morton Counties. This trend should continue through mid morning followed by sunny conditions. Forecast is on track. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 439 AM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019 Latest fog/stratus imagery loop and surface observations show an area of low clouds/fog centered over south central ND, covering the northern portion of Kidder county, most of Burleigh, southern Morton and Sioux counties. Followed the RAP/HRRR BUFKIT soundings, and the 925mb wind/RH fields, which suggests the boundary layer winds will continue to veer from south-southwest to west-southwest, advecting in drier air. The end result will be a gradual decay/dissipation of the stratus/fog through 15z/10AM CDT Tuesday across south central ND. Sunshine will then take control for the remainder of the day. Water vapor imagery shows a upper level low circulating over northeastern Wyoming/western South Dakota. This will lift northeast across southern ND today. Other than suppressing the height fields, no other consequence will occur with its passage. Low level southwest to westerly winds and a plethora of sunshine today will help produce milder afternoon high temperatures. Expect highs in the mid to upper 30s, to lower 40s far southwest. Mostly Clear then becoming partly cloudy tonight with lows 10 to 20. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 439 AM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019 Highlight is the issuance of a Winter Storm Watch for Blizzard conditions Wednesday evening through Thursday far southwest, south central and the James River Valley. Significant weather impacts are becoming more probable, with the worst conditions favoring the James River Valley. Strong low pressure still on track to eject out of Baja California today, into the Central Plains Wednesday, and midwest Thursday. Very strong northerly winds will ensue Wednesday evening, being drawn into the strong low pressure center. In conjunction with the very strong winds will be heavy snowfall, especially over the James River Valley where 6 to 12 inches along with wind gusts to 60 mph are forecast. Across the far southwest and south central, 3 to 6 inches of snow along with gusts to 50 mph can be expected. The 00Z GEFS Plumes still show several clusters of possible snow accumulations from Bismarck to Dickinson, but are more conclusive with the higher amounts as mentioned above in the James River Valley. For far southwest and south central ND, the hazards and impacts will occur Wednesday evening through late Thursday morning. Across the James River Valley, the heavy snow/winds begin Wednesday evening and continue through through early Thursday evening; but the impacts may be felt far beyond Thursday evening! The system exits the James River Valley Thursday evening.
