Have received a few reports of freezing drizzle west and will
continue a mention through tonight as the models still show a dry
layer aloft and lack of ice crystals. Otherwise Rolla has wild
chills below -25 for a few hours tonight, with warming
temperatures expected tonight think this will improve shortly.

Will decide on the any possible upgrades to warnings with the next
update.

Forecast remains in good shape. Band of light snow associated with
a mid level embedded impulse continues to slowly propagate east
across western into central North Dakota. Some areas still may
receive up to around 1 inch of new snowfall through tonight. On
the backside/western edge of the snow, had reports of light
freezing rain/freezing drizzle, which a few web cams support along
with the ND DOT map showing some ice. Roughly a couple of hours
ago issued a special weather statement for the southwest, then
expanded for all of western ND as more reports came in. Will allow
the SPS to continue through 06Z. Afterwards models support
reintroducing ice which should greatly reduce the ZR chances after
midnight. Well of course continue to monitor through the early
morning hours, especially after 09Z when we start to warm aloft
and road sfc temperatures via METRo Roadcast forecast remain
subfreezing through much of the AM hours.

UPDATE
Issued at 625 PM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

Main change with this forecast issuance was to slow down the
eastward progression of snow this evening based on latest high
res guidance. I also significantly increased POPs where it is
snowing now and expected to snow in the next few hours, utilizing
a blend of the HREF/SREF/CONSSHORT. The winter storm watch and
high wind watch will be maintained as is.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) Issued at 228 PM CST
Sat Jan 26 2019

Periodic light snow through the evening ahead of the strongest
Alberta Clipper of the season highlights the short term forecast
challenges.

A weak area of relatively enhanced mid-level vorticity will
continue to drift from northwest to southeast across western and
central North Dakota through this evening and into the overnight
hours. Strong warm air advection ahead of an anomalously strong
Clipper will enhance a new band of light snow early Sunday
morning, possibly bringing an inch or two of snowfall accumulation
to portions of western and central North Dakota. Warm
temperatures near the surface across parts of the far west will
allow for the possibility of some brief light rain or freezing
rain.

A vigorous vorticity maximum at 500 mb will approach the northwest from
Canada on Sunday. At the surface, low pressure will undergo
cyclogenesis under the left exit region of a potent 130 knot 300
mb jet max. An arctic cold front will accompany this Clipper and
sweep through the state quickly through the day. A relatively
narrow band of significant snowfall accumulation will setup
somewhere across central or eastern North Dakota. The path of the
surface cyclone will determine where this band sets up and this
exact path is still a bit uncertain, but the latest trends are
for a nudge eastward. At the moment, the highest totals look to
range from 3 to 7 inches of accumulation generally along and
east/north of the Missouri River. Light rain or freezing rain may
also be possible across parts of the west.

Behind the cold front, very strong cold air advection (as high as
120+ degrees Celsius per 12 hours) and 3 hour pressure rises
approaching 15 to 18 mb will promote very strong winds across most
of the forecast area, especially the west and central. 12z 3 km
NAM Nest soundings over Bowman late Sunday afternoon and Monday
morning show 55 to 65 knots of wind at the top of a dry adiabatic
mixed layer. This suggests that we may see wind gusts as high as
65 mph as the pressure bubble barrels across the state. Thus the
high wind watch still looks to be on target and will likely need
to be upgraded to a warning for the next forecast package. For the
winter storm watch, elected to include blizzard potential wording
for all counties in the watch area as the Bagley blowing snow
model is now showing widespread significant blowing snow
generally along and east of the Missouri River valley.

Snow and wind will gradually begin to relax through the day on
Monday as the Clipper exits the region, leaving bitterly cold
temperatures in its wake.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday) Issued at 228 PM CST

Following the Clipper, a large area of arctic high pressure will
make its way into the Northern Plains as a strong closed 500 mb
Hudson Bay low deepens and cyclonically spins over the Great
Lakes, leaving North Dakota in a prime position for bitterly cold
temperatures and life threatening wind chills. At the moment
Tuesday morning through Thursday morning looks to be the coldest
time frame with widespread wind chill values likely ranging from
35 to 55 below zero. Further advisories and warnings may be needed
after the Clipper exits the region.
