...Snow Developing Ahead of the Wednesday Morning Commute with 
Difficult to Hazardous Travel Conditions...

.Snow will impact travel late tonight through Wednesday, with
difficult to hazardous travel for the Wednesday morning commute.
Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour are possible, especially late 
tonight and Wednesday morning with visibility reduced to under 
one half mile at times.

A few inches of new snow may already be on the ground at the 
start of the commute across northeast Iowa and southeast 
Minnesota. The snow will continue to spread northeast through 
western and central Wisconsin early Wednesday morning.

Plan now for a difficult Wednesday morning commute. Expect the
snow to taper off late Wednesday afternoon but will linger across
north central Wisconsin into Wednesday evening.

Morning...

.At 2 AM, snow was spreading north across the area with roads
quickly becoming snow covered and slippery. Snowfall rates of 1 
inch per hour are occurring and the visibility has been reduced 
to 1/2 mile or less under the heavier snows. The morning commute 
will be difficult to hazardous.

Snow was falling across northeast Iowa, portions of southeast 
Minnesota and southwest Wisconsin. The snow will continue to

...Difficult To Hazardous Travel Developing Quickly This
Morning...

.At 330 AM, snow continued to spread north across the area with 
the leading edge already near a Lake City Minnesota to Black River
Falls and Mauston Wisconsin line. Roads quickly becoming snow 
covered and slippery with the onset of the snow. The morning 
commute will be difficult to hazardous for much of the area.

Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour are occurring and the 
visibility has been reduced to 1/2 mile or less under the heavier 
snows. As much as 2 to 5 inches of new snow are already being 
reported across parts of northeast Iowa and far southwest 
Wisconsin, along with some drifting snow. 

Snow will continue to spread north across the area through the
rest of the overnight hours, with moderate to locally heavy snow
continuing thru the morning hours. The snow will then diminish
from southwest to northeast across the area through the afternoon
into early evening hours. Total snowfalls of 4 to 8 inches are
expected, with heaviest amounts along and west of a Wabasha
Minnesota to Oelwein Iowa line. Some freezing drizzle remains
possible across far southwest Wisconsin and nearby areas.

...Hazardous Travel In Snow This Morning...

.Slippery roads and low visibility are occurring now across the 
area as a band of heavy snow moves through. Snowfall reports have 
ranged from 2 to 5 inches along and south of Interstate 90, under 
this heavy band. This heavy band of snow will move into north 
central Wisconsin through 8 AM. Another band of heavier snow could
move through around mid morning through noon. Between the bands 
light to moderate snow will continue. Freezing drizzle may mix in 
later today over northeast Iowa and far southwest Wisconsin. 

Storm total snow accumulation of 5 to 8 inches are expected 
across northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and west central into 
north central Wisconsin before the snow ends this afternoon into

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Wednesday)

If it seems like it snows every few days, it's because it has.
Measurable snow has fallen on at least half the days this Feb for
most of the local area, with some monthly snowfall records already
falling (or likely to). With that said, more is on the way for late
Tue night-Wed...and potentially considerably more come the weekend
(more on that in the Long Term disc below).

Models remain in good agreement with taking an upper level shortwave
trough out of the desert southwest northeast, sweeping over the
great lakes (getting a bit of a negative tilt as it does) Wed. Not
much of a sfc low with rather weak gradient associated with it, but
track is generally across the local area. The QG convergence with
the shortwave is much heftier, with strong lift through the layers
between 12-18z Wed. Good thermodynamic forcing also highlighted in
this period, with upglide on the 280:295K sfcs and low level warm
air advection. 300 mb curved jet streak will enhance the lift. In
addition, north-south running x-sections point to sloping
frontogenetic support, and perhaps more significantly, some -EPV
running across it suggesting the potential for enhanced banding (NAM
a lot more rambunctious with this compared to the other models).

So, it's going to snow...but looks like a relatively quick hitter as
the shortwave treks through at a decent pace. Some variances in
timing starting to crop up though. The GFS/EC continue to paint the
forecast area well into the snow by 12z Wed while the 12z run of the
NAM doesn't do this until between 15-18z Wed. While only a few hours
difference, the impacts to the Wed morning commute would be
significant (not bad in the NAM, a lot more challenging in the
GFS/EC). As for amounts, the DGZ is not as deep as the weekend snow
event, maybe on the order of 100 mb for Wed - but the lift through
the saturated layer is stronger. Ratios a bit above climatology
likely a good place to start (roughly 15:1). Differences in QPF
between models coming into play...GFS tosses 1/2 inch out while NAM
is about half that. Think the GFS is too ambitious and will side
toward SREF/model blends for now. Resulting snowfall would range
from 4 to 6 inches (less in the southeast, more northwest). However,
with enhanced banding looking likely, some amounts pushing 7" or so
couldn't be ruled out. The "where" part of that question is
uncertain. Some model trends are suggesting a shift northwest with
the heavier snowband potential - resulting in lesser amounts for
parts of northeast IA/southwest WI and perhaps a slight shift down
for amounts over southeast MN. Most of what falls looks to come in a
6 hour period with some 1" (maybe 2") per hour rates
possible/likely. Impacts likely higher due to timing with snow in or
moving in around the Wed morning commute - even if higher amounts
aren't realized. Work, school travel will be impacted for many if
not most?

With all that in mind, feel a Winter Storm Watch is warranted for
potential snow amounts and high impact time of snowfall. Will go
with locations where higher amounts are more likely, even if models
trends to shift a bit northwest are realized.

Lastly, don't want to neglect some small threat for freezing drizzle
across the south. Bufkit soundings and x-sections suggest saturation
could shallow out just enough to remove ice from cloud for periods
Wed across far northeast IA and southwest WI. Doesn't look like a
significant threat at this time, but will continue to hold at least
small chances for freezing drizzle in those locations.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Monday)

We understand. We aren't too excited about it either. If we had an
"off" switch, we'd use it. But MORE snow is headed our way for the
weekend, and it could be a bunch. It's still several days away and
storms can/do shift their storm track - but here is the latest...

The GFS and EC continue to shift an upper level shortwave trough out
of the desert southwest Fri night, driving it northeast to across
the Great Lakes for Sat night/Sun. Trough takes on a negative tilt
as it approaches with a deepening sfc low. The EC is about 6 hours
faster than the GFS, perhaps a bit stronger and a tad farther
north...but both solutions put the local forecast area in the
north/northwest deformation region of the storm. GFS points to
strong, sloping frontogenetic support with a hefty 300 mb coupled
jet enhancing all this lift (mostly Sat night). Considerable
snowfall could/would result, if the scenario plays out as currently
progged. Some warm air to play with initially though, on the south
side of the low. Could be some mixed winter ptypes for southern
locations at the outset, but the bulk of the forcing looks to go
into snow production. Adding insult to injury, with the storm
winding itself up as it moves in, tightening pressure gradient means
strong-gusty winds would add a blowing/drifting element.

Again, a lot of time between now and the weekend for shifts in the
storm track, and don't want to hype a storm that could shift north
of the local area too much - but as it sits, this would be high
impact storm for the region (somewhere). Stay tuned...

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)

It still looks like VFR conditions will prevail through Tuesday
evening. An area of high pressure over western Minnesota and Iowa
will continue to slowly drift east through Tuesday. This will keep
skies clear overnight and with the light winds, a little bit of
fog could form for some occasional visibility reductions. As the
high pulls away late Tuesday afternoon, mid-level moisture will
start to stream in ahead of the next storm system and these will
bring in a high VFR ceiling. Conditions expected to rapidly
deteriorate after 20.06Z with snow moving in and MVFR/IFR
conditions developing.
