Travel conditions remain hazardous across the area this evening
from a combination of falling snow and blowing and drifting snow.
Recent reports from a southeast Minnesota sheriff's department
indicated numerous roads were being impacted by the drifting with
some reduced visibility from blowing snow. As a result, there were
several accidents or slide offs.

The falling snow will continue to taper off from west to east
through the evening with additional accumulations of 1.5 inches or
less. The higher totals will be over central Wisconsin. However,
the winds will remain strong enough to continue producing blowing
and drifting snow, especially over open, unsheltered areas and on
the higher terrain.

...Drifting Snow Remains A Problem...

.Travel conditions remain hazardous across the area from a 
combination of falling snow and blowing and drifting snow.
Numerous roads continue across the open, unsheltered areas of
southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa continue to be impacted by
drifting snow. Travel was not advised for some parts of the area.
The winds causing the drifting snow will diminish overnight which
will allow the drifting snow to end.

The falling snow was mainly across Wisconsin and will continue to
taper off from west to east. Additional accumulations should be
less than an inch.

.While some light snow continues to fall across western Wisconsin,
no significant accumulations are expected before the snow ends
overnight.

The winds producing the drifting snow over the open, unsheltered

overnight. As this occurs, the snow will stop drifting across area

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday Night)

Focus this morning is on the winter storm to impact the area late
today through Tuesday.

It's a quiet start to the day with stratus blanketing the area given
moisture trapped beneath relatively warm mid-levels. Benign weather
will continue through much of the daytime hours with seasonable
temps and cloudy skies.

However, water vapor imagery early this morning shows a few upper
troughs out heading across the Rockies. These will cross the plains
later today and interact, taking on an increasingly negative tilt
with time. Concurrently, a surface low will lift northeastward from
the southern plains today into the lower Great Lakes on Tuesday.
Ahead of the main wave, there is a chance for a bit of freezing
drizzle late today ahead of the stronger lift and moisture push.
However, there is some question whether the moist layer will be deep
enough for drizzle before the column rapidly saturates this evening
as the snow develops. It looks to be a very short window.

The heavier snow is expected to develop from the southwest this
evening, continuing into Tuesday morning. Snowfall rates of 1+ inch
per hour are possible within the heavier snow bands during this time
with increasing warm/moist advection and the approach of the upper
trough. Lighter snows/snow showers will persist on Tuesday afternoon
and evening as the surface low deepens across the eastern Great
Lakes and an inverted trough swings north and eastward. There is
still some variation among model solutions with QPF placement, but a
trend in both the high res guidance along with the global solutions
is suggesting the higher QPF/snow amounts from northeast IA through
central WI, with somewhat lower amounts across parts of southeast
MN. Overall, a general range of 6 to 10 inches still looks
reasonable with the lower amounts farther west and potential for
locally higher amounts over parts of WI (locally around a foot
possible). A strong pressure gradient is progged over the area by
Tuesday afternoon as high pressure noses eastward from the
northern plains. The NAM would indicate noticeably stronger gust
potential with its more intense surface low to the east compared
with the GFS and would support considerable blowing/drifting in
prone areas west of the Mississippi. That will be another aspect
of this system to keep an eye on. Converted the winter storm
watches to warnings for the entire, slightly delaying the timing.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Sunday)
Issued at 330 AM CST Mon Feb 11 2019

High pressure briefly will spread across the region on Wednesday
with dry and seasonably cool conditions. Unfortunately, the active
weather pattern will continue with another Pacific trough forecast
to approach from the plains later Thursday into Friday. A surface
low is forecast to cut northeastward from the central plains towards
the Great Lakes in association with the trough during the Thu/Fri
time frame, although confidence in timing/track remains low at this
time. This system has the potential to bring additional snow to the
area, but it's far too early to determine the specifics. Quieter
weather is expected at least into the start of the weekend as high
pressure follows behind the departing low. Cooler air is also
expected heading into next weekend with below average temps.

Cigs: MVFR to IFR will persist tonight-Mon. With next winter storm
starting to push in later Mon, cigs expected to a drop a bit as it
moves in - leaning more LIFR/IFR late Monday night-Tue morning.

WX/vsby: MVFR vsbys lingering longer than first thought (BR). Sfc
obs show a mix of vfr/mvfr. Will hold with some mvfr for the
overnight hours, improving Mon morning. Pcpn will push in from the
south between 00-03z Tue (perhaps as freezing drizzle), with snow
overnight Monday through Tue morning. Significant accumulations are
expected - with the bulk done by 18z Tue. There is a
blowing/drifting risk for Tue/Tue night - moreso KRST. Additional
reductions to vsbys outside of the falling snow likely, perhaps more
MVFR with current forecast wind speeds (if they increase, IFR
likely).

Winds: generally light east tonight, picking up a bit for Mon but
holding east. Stronger winds are expected Tue into Tue night -
potential sustained near 20 kts for KRST.
