Unseasonably warm, moist air has advected north and east into the
Upper MS Valley this afternoon ahead of a stacked low pressure
system across western MN. With a few breaks in the clouds and gusty
southerly winds, temps have risen into the low to mid 50s across
much of southwest into central WI. In contrast, portions of
southeast MN through north-central WI have remained in the 30s with
low stratus, areas of fog and some drizzle.
The surface low across southwest MN will move little overnight
tonight while a shortwave trough rounding the base of the broad
longwave trough will help induce a secondary area of low pressure
across the Great Lakes. In between these two systems, expect the
area to remain on the fringe of more widespread areas of precip to
the east and west, although higher rain/snow chances may extend into
parts of central/north-central WI as the low develops to the east.
Up to an inch of snow is possible across north-central WI by
morning. Very weak low-level lift ahead of the surface low could be
enough to produce a bit of drizzle or freezing drizzle as temps
slowly cool overnight. Not terribly confident in how widespread or
impactful freezing drizzle will be, but a very light glazing is
possible on untreated surfaces.

Water vapor satellite this afternoon shows an upper level low over
the Missouri River Valley with a strong short wave trough rotating
around the low over the Southern Plains. This short wave trough will
lift north/northeast toward the Great Lakes and cause the upper
level low to reform overnight into Monday over the northern Great
Lakes. The low will then wobble around over the northern Great Lakes
through Monday night before shifting east into the southern Canada
Tuesday. The short wave trough that causes the upper level low to
reform will remain intact and rotate around the low and across the
region Monday night. This looks to produce weak to at time moderate
pv advection in the 500-300 mb layer across the northeast half of
Wisconsin. The frontogenesis does not look to be very strong with
just a weak signal in the mid-levels. There does look to be ample
frontogenesis to provide additional lift with 2 to 4 ubar/s on the
280K surface Monday afternoon and night.
The majority of the precipitation from this system should fall as
snow, expect for a little bit of freezing drizzle Monday morning
before the ice is totally introduced into the clouds and where
surface temperatures are occasionally warm enough for rain or a
rain/snow mix. Snow totals look to generally be in the 6 to 8 inch
range north of Interstate 94 and will upgrade the winter storm watch
to a warning. Will also add in Buffalo over to Jackson County in
western Wisconsin as the current forecast has around 6 inches or a
little more in more than half of those counties. Could also see the
need for a warning in Monroe, Adams and Juneau as those counties are
also very close to 6 inches for much of the area.
The middle of the week looks to be dry before some precipitation
chances return for the end of the week into the upcoming weekend.
A northern stream short wave trough will help to carve out a long
wave trough over the central part of the country. Most of the
moisture with this system may be locked up near the Gulf Coast with
a stronger short wave trough in the bottom of the long wave trough.
As a result, the precipitation across the Midwest may not be very
widespread and on the light side.

Abundant low-level moisture ahead of a surface low to the west
will result in primarily IFR to MVFR ceilings this afternoon and
tonight, although ceiling heights may be somewhat variable with a
few windows of VFR possible. Could not rule out some patchy
DZ/FZDZ into tonight, but confidence right now is fairly low. Snow
chances along with IFR vsbys are expected by later Monday morning
or early afternoon. Southerly winds will gust up to 25 kts at
times this afternoon, especially at KRST, before becoming light
tonight and then westerly on Monday.
