A band of 5 to locally 10 inches of accumulation is expected across portions of north-central Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and west-central into north-central Wisconsin. .SHORT TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Currently monitoring a rather vigorous mid-level shortwave moving
east through northern MN per latest GOES water vapor loop/RAP 500mb
analysis. At the surface, a 990mb low was co-located under this mid
level wave with a warm front pushing east through MN. Lift ahead of
the low and warm front was producing widespread mid-cloud and
pockets of light rain mainly across areas north of the I-94
corridor. Temperatures across the area as of 2 am ranged from the
mid 20s to mid 30s.
For today, that low will continue tracking east dragging a cold
front through the area this afternoon. Brief period in the warm
sector of this system ahead of the incoming cold front is expected to
produce highs today in the 40s, with possibly a few 50 degree
readings across northeast IA into southwest WI under partly sunny
skies. A few showers will be possible across northern WI with the
front but the rest of the area should stay dry.
A ridge of high pressure moves in for tonight for quiet conditions.
Expect in increase in high and mid level highs later in the night
ahead of an organizing storm system over the Central Rockies. Plan
on overnight lows in the upper 20s/lower 30s.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

All eyes on incoming strong/dynamic storm system spinning up over
our region late Tuesday into Wednesday. Models are coming into
pretty good agreement on general track/timing of this system.
Initial strong push of moisture transport ahead of the
deepening/stacking low will move into our southern parts late
Tuesday afternoon/evening. This will bring rain or a rain/snow mix
and a few embedded thunderstorms (with elevated/2-7km CAPE in the
150-250j/kg range) into areas mainly south of I-94 by late
afternoon/early evening. Dynamic cooling through the column with
stacking/deepening low as it moves into IA will change precipitation
to mainly snow across portions of north central IA/southeast MN/west
central into north central WI fairly rapidly. Mainly rain is
expected for far northeast IA into southwest/central WI where warmer
inflow air will reside.
The low will continue lifting northeast through WI Wednesday
morning, exiting northeast of the area Wednesday afternoon. Current
track of the low would place heaviest snowband (potentially 6-10
inches) from south central/southeast MN into northwest/north central
WI. Since upper level energy is just reaching the CONUS from the
Pacific currently (per latest GOES water vapor imagery), will leave
Winter Storm Watch going and let the dayshift assess latest 12z runs
with CONUS raob network analyzing upper energy -contributing to
better model resolution. Current placement of the Watch looks good
as well.
Large ridge of high pressure builds in Wednesday night into
Thanksgiving Day morning for a respite from the storminess. A brief
respite though, as a chance for some light snow is slated to return
later in the afternoon ahead of yet another storm system brewing
over the Intermountain West. This would be mainly west of the
Mississippi River. Plan on highs in the 30s.
Precipitation chances will be on the increase as we progress into
Friday/the weekend as that aforementioned Intermountain West storm
system moves into the region. This storm has the potential for some
significant snow accumulations and will have to be monitored closely -
especially with all the ongoing Holiday travel.

VFR conditions expected through the afternoon, with gusty
westerly winds and perhaps a few sprinkles. Guidance has trended
toward the low VFR to MVFR cloud deck to the north moving farther
south into the area this evening, so have introduced MVFR mentions
at both TAF sites through Tuesday morning. In addition, winds
will gradually turn from northwesterly to northeasterly through
the overnight hours, with speeds becoming under 10 kts by this
evening.
Beyond this TAF period, attention turns to an incoming winter
storm Tuesday evening into Wednesday. Expect MVFR and IFR
conditions to prevail as rain and snow move through. Highest
snowfall accumulations look to stretch from north-central Iowa and
southeast Minnesota (including RST) into north-central Wisconsin.
LSE remains right on the southern edge of the heaviest snow, so
will need to watch trends closely.
