073 WWUS43 KARX 180836 WSWARX URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE National Weather Service La Crosse WI 236 AM CST Fri Jan 18 2019 ...Snow, Hazardous Travel Today And Tonight... .Snow will make for slick to hazardous travel for many across the region this afternoon through tonight - especially along and south of Interstate 90. The evening commute could be difficult in some locations. Delay or avoid travel during peak snowfall if possible. Currently, highest amounts from 6 to 8 inches are expected across northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin. Amounts will decrease rapidity north of the heaviest band. Snowfall rates of an inch per hour will be common at times with significant reductions in visibility. Drifting could also occur in open and unsheltered areas. The snow will start to spread across portions of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa by the noon hour, gradually extending into southwest Wisconsin by mid afternoon. The incoming 12Z model guidance so far suggests increasing QPF/snow
amounts for the system tomorrow and tomorrow evening, especially
along and south of the MN/IA border into far southwest WI. The
potential exists for snowfall of around 6 or more inches in this
area. As a result, will be coordinating with surrounding offices
to issue a winter storm watch late this morning. With the influx
of dry air to the north, will have to continue to refine the
northern edge of the snow with a sharp gradient in snowfall
amounts expected.

GOES water vapor/RAP 500mb analysis early this morning showing a mid-
level shortwave trough moving southeast across western MN. This was
producing some light snow across eastern SD/southwest MN/northwest
IA. Latest hi-res models march this shortwave across the area this
morning while in a general weakening phase. Current thinking is that
areas west of the Mississippi River will likely see a dusting of
snow with tapering as it moves east of the Mississippi River. Will
also have to keep an eye on the small possibility of patchy light
freezing drizzle as the wave departs by early this afternoon.
Otherwise, a cloudy day on tap with near normal temperatures in the
20s.
High pressure builds into the area from Canada tonight with some
clearing expected. Overnight lows will be in the single digits/teens
above zero.
For Friday into Friday night, another mid-level trough will drop out
of the Northern Plains while deepening low pressure takes place over
the Central/Southern Plains. Good feed of moisture an increasing 850-
500mb frontogenesis will likely produce some accumulating snow for
at least northeast IA into southwest WI. Could see a rather sharp
southwest to northeast gradient in snow/no snow as high pressure
sprawled out across southern Canada, northern MN/WI will be
providing dry low-level flow. Right now, model consensus is
producing anywhere from 2-6 inches possible, heaviest accumulations
south of a line from Austin MN to Boscobel WI. However, based on
drier air filtering in from the north/northeast vs. system forcing
uncertainty, will hold off on any headlines for now and let dayshift
assess further with 12z model runs. Will continue covering messaging
in HWO and other social media outlets. Temperature-wise, highs
Friday will be on the colder side of normals with readings topping
off in the mid-teens to lower 20s. Lows Friday night will range from
the single digits to teens above zero.

Colder than normal temperatures will set up across the area for the
weekend as Arctic high slides from Canada into the Great Lakes
Region. Plan on highs Saturday and Sunday in the teens to lower 20s.
Coldest air will be late Saturday night/early Sunday morning as lows
drop into the single digits below/above zero with wind chills in the
teens below zero.
Another mid-level trough tracking slowly east across the
Plains/Upper Mississippi River Valley region will bring a chance of
light accumulating snow from Monday through Tuesday. Otherwise,
continuing a bit colder than normal with highs in the upper teens to
lower 20s.
Another weak system drops down in northwest flow aloft Wednesday
afternoon for a slight chance of light snow. Plan on highs again in
the upper teens to lower 20s.
