.SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday)

The main issue into Monday will be the continued cold, wind chill
values and associated headlines. The cold air is just beginning to
spread across the local area with some spots now slipping below
zero. The cold air will continue to move in this morning and
expecting a good share of the area to be below zero by sunrise.
With the area of high pressure at the surface centered over South
Dakota, enough of a gradient to produce northwest winds around 10
mph which will produce wind chills of 20 to 25 below in the
current advisory area and not planning any adjustments even though
a few spots could still be slightly into advisory criteria at the
lunch hour.
The coldest air of this arctic outbreak will be over the area
tonight with 925 mb temperatures dropping to around -24C. The
02.12Z NAEFS remains consistent in showing this to be around 1
standard deviation below normal, which normally would not put us
in record setting territory. While this may be true with overnight
lows as they fall into the single digits and teens below zero,
there is a potential to set some records for coldest daytime high
temperatures both today and Monday. In regards to wind chills,
another advisory will be needed for tonight into Monday morning
for the entire area with values of 20 to 30 below expected.
.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday)

There looks to be a small chance for some light snow Monday night
as a pretty strong northern stream short wave trough rotates
across the Upper Midwest. However, this wave only looks to produce
some weak pv advection in the 500-300 mb layer as it comes through
along with weak qg convergence in the 850-300 mb layer. Looking at
some forecast soundings, they don't show a lot of omega with a
shallow saturated layer close to the surface that will be in the
dendritic growth zone. This could end up being just flurries, but
for now, will maintain some forecast continuity and keep a 20 to
30 percent chance of some light snow.
Temperatures look to moderate just enough that a wind chill
advisory may not be needed Monday night into Tuesday morning. A
few spots look to briefly fall just into advisory criteria, but
does not look very widespread or to last very long.
The different models remain consistent within their own solutions
with a short wave trough crossing the Rockies and the Midwest for
late this week. The 03.00Z ECMWF and CMC remain weak with this
short wave trough and track it just to the south of the area while
the 03.00Z GFS and GFSFV3 are much stronger and bring across the
region with the potential for some accumulating snow. Will
maintain a mention of some snow with this system with 20 to 40
percent chances mainly south of Interstate 90.
Another system looks to be taking aim at the area for the upcoming
weekend. Plenty of model differences again with this system and
while there may be decent agreement on timing between the ECMWF,
GFS and GFSFV3, there is very little agreement on the expected
strength of the system. Will keep it simple at this point and just
have a chance of precipitation for most of the area Saturday.

Main taf concerns are sustained wind speeds at both taf sites.
A weak cold front moved across the area last evening and
tightened pressure gradient. This has produced sustained wind
speeds of 10 to 15 knots per latest metars. The pressure gradient
will remain tight across the region and produce northwesterly
winds of 10 to 15 knots with gusts possibly up to 20 knots at
both RST/LSE taf sites today. With subsidence and dry airmass over
the lower layer of the atmosphere column...VFR conditions will
prevail through the taf period at both RST/LSE taf sites.
