Main short-term fcst concerns are highs today then increasing
SHRA/TSRA chances tonight.

06z Data analysis had a 1000mb low moving across western KS with
troughing northeast into western IA and southern MN. Moisture being
lifted north ahead of the sfc-850mb trough combined with some 850-
500mb FN convergence near the MN/IA border responsible for a band of
sct SHRA from NE IA into SE SD early this morning. Further NE into
NE WI, leading edge of the moisture transport/theta-e convergence
producing sct -SHRA across portions of eastern WI. Otherwise, a
warmer night across the SE 2/3 of the region under cloud cover and
warm advection near/ahead of the trough axis.

No issues noted with 16.00z model initializations. Solutions similar
as mid level ridging builds/moves across the Upper Midwest today/
tonight, ahead of stronger northern/southern stream troughing coming
thru the Rockies. Short-term confidence is good this cycle.

For the short-term, 850-500mb FN convergence driving the SHRA early
this morning quickly wanes/moves off by or shortly after 12z this
morning. Today trends dry as the lower level trough moves SE of the
area and weak high pressure builds in from the north under the
rising hgts aloft. A drier push of sfc-700mb air from the north as
well today with a partly cloudy/partly sunny skies expected for most
locations. With some sunshine and a warmer start this morning, mixed
925mb temps today support highs in the low-mid 60s with the blend of
guidance highs looking good.

Next round of low level moisture transport/theta-e convergences
lifts north into the area tonight as the sfc-850mb low moves into
NEB and the trough axis that slides SE of the area this morning
starts to return north as warm front. Warm advection/isentropic
upglide over the sfc-850mb front combined with divergence aloft
ahead of the troughing coming thru the Rockies provide the lift. A
drier low level airmass to re-saturate Tue evening before higher
SHRA chances would start to spread north across the area later Tue
night. Kept -SHRA chances rather small and across the south end of
the fcst area Tue evening, with chances increasing to 50-80% across
the SW half of the fcst area toward 12z Wed. MUCAPE of perhaps 250-
500 J/KG when lifting elevated parcels progged into mainly the SW
half of the fcst area later this evening/overnight. Continued with
mention of some -TSRA chances (main threat the lightning) across the
SW half of the fcst area, mainly later tonight.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

For Wednesday thru Thursday night: main fcst concerns this period
are SHRA/TSRA chances/precip amounts Wed into Thu and any strong to
severe storm chances Wed afternoon into Wed evening.

Model runs of 16.00z in good agreement bringing the north/south
parts of the troughing east across the plains Wed then phasing them
as they move into/across the MS valley Wed night thru Thu night.
Trend is for the trough to not close off a mid level low as it
crosses the mid/upper MS valley (remain an open wave). Overall Wed
thru Thu night fcst confidence is good this cycle.

Bulk of the forcing/lift with the approach sfc low thru mid level
trough now progged to spread across the area Wed. With a more open,
progressive mid level trough/wave, forcing/lift now progged to
gradually wane/lift NE of the area Wed night/Thu. Greater precip
chances and QPF now looking to be a shorter period of Mainly Wed,
with rain chances tapering off Wed night/Thu as the sfc-850mb
low/front moves across and east of the area. Still need to watch Wed
into Wed evening for potential hydrologically significant precip
which would create rises and possible flooding on tributary rivers
or prolong the flooding along the MS River. However the threat of a
prolonged period of 36-48 hrs of heavy rain possibilities is
diminishing. Model blend rain totals from late tonight thru Thu now
now more in the 1" range vs. 1 to 2", locally up to 3" from earlier
model runs. Continued with 50-90% SHRA chances Wed into Wed evening,
then followed the model consensus of decreasing precip chances later
Wed night thru Thu night.

Per SWODY2, marginal threat of strong/severe TSRA in the area Wed
afternoon/evening cannot be ruled out. The model consensus tracks
the sfc low NE across the fcst area with southeast half of the fcst
area in the 'warm sector' for a time Wed afternoon/evening, with as
much as 500-1000 J/KG of MUCAPE possible.  However, low level RH
progs show saturation of the 925-850mb layers across eastern
IA/southern WI with this moisture/strato-cu deck stuck in/under an
inversion. Lower KM or 2 of the column looking to be cut off from
the convection, with limited wind shear in the portion of the column
above 1.5 to 2KM. Any strong/severe risk across the SE half of the
fcst area Wed afternoon/evening appears to be elevated TSRA with
possibilities of some hail. A cooler day Thu in northerly flow/low
level cold advection under clouds behind the departing low with the
blend of guidance highs in the upper 40s-low 50s reasonable.

For Friday thru Monday (days 4 to 7): main fcst concerns this period
are returning SHRA chances Sun/Mon.

Medium range model runs of 16.00z in good agreement on shortwave
ridging building across the region Fri/Sat, followed by a northern
stream shortwave into the north-central CONUS for Sun/Mon. Day 4-7
fcst confidence is average to good this cycle.

High pressure to slide across the region Fri/Sat, for dry, quiet
weather. Temps to return to above normal by Sat as low level warm
advection spreads in on the back side of the high. Northern stream
wave to approach for Sun/Mon pushes a lower level trough/front into
across the region. Timing/strength detail differences as expected by
days 6/7, but some 20-30% SHRA chances Sun/Mon as a front would move
into/across the area reasonable at this time.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning)

Last of the showers will exit the area through 13-14Z, leaving a
period of clearing skies for many areas, with just some thickening
mid/high clouds expected later today. Those clouds will eventually
lower late tonight ahead of an approaching warm front, but with
ceilings still VFR through 12Z Wednesday. However, as moisture
increases into the area, showers and thunderstorms are likely to
develop late tonight, impacting LSE and RST by 10Z or so per
current forecast trends. Still a bit too early to include a
thunder mention for either site given some uncertainty but
something to watch the next few forecast cycles. Winds will shift
north then northeasterly this morning behind a passing weak
frontal boundary, holding southeasterly through tonight but
increasing in speed 10-15 knots late.
