vehicles. Turn Around, Don't Drown!

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Wednesday)
Issued at 253 PM CDT Tue Apr 9 2019

Trends in this spring storm becoming a bit more clear, as expected,
but still a few possibilities on how this plays out. Main challenges
center on how mix of weather will actually impact travel, including
snow bands and threat for some mixed precipitation at times. Overall
trend is for most of area to be on the warmer side of this system
and hence, lesser impact than areas west and north.

As we watch upper trough move inland across the western states,
already seeing signs of a mid level frontogenetic band setting up
from the Dakotas into far western Wisconsin. Much of this is light
initially and not reaching the ground as it battles drier air
funneling in from the north. Lift will continue tonight though, and
strengthen with approach of trough, leading to eventual saturation
and onset of a more continuous precipitation band.

As temperatures cool overnight, and lifting continues, expect this
precipitation band to become more established. Short term and
mesoscale models still hint at some mixed precipitation, but
thinking this may be mainly rain or snow. Initial snowfall from this
band into Wednesday morning could be main impact producer,
especially across southeast Minnesota into far western Wisconsin,
where several inches of wet snow are possible. Snowfall rates could
overcome warm road temperatures, at least for a time, but once
snowfall rates decrease, would expect melting to be fairly quick.
This might prompt a short-lived advisory at some point.

Evolution of this frontogenetic band a bit in question on Wednesday.
Prefer trends of NAM and ECMWF of lifting this more northeast
through the day, with a transition over to rain for most areas.
09.12z GFS tends to drift band more east in time, but overall trend
in all models is to weaken this feature through the day. Will have
to be watched though. If snowfall is strong enough, could keep
things a bit cooler than expected and produce a fairly narrow snow
or sleet band with higher impacts as it slowly drifts northeast
towards the Interstate 94 corridor during the day.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday Night through Tuesday)
Issued at 253 PM CDT Tue Apr 9 2019

Trends in models have been further north and west with main storm
and related surface low going into Wednesday night and Thursday.
This led to lower snowfall amounts overall in earlier forecast
adjustments, and this still looks reasonable after browsing
09.12z guidance.

As main upper trough ejects into central Midwest late Wednesday, low
level warm air advection increases and max wet-bulb temperatures
climb well above zero through most of the forecast area. In
addition, watching some drier air moving in at main icing levels as
"clear slot" idea is observed ahead of main wave. Not sure a true
clear slot will develop, but could experience periods of drizzle or
lighter precipitation with very little impact. Again, amount of ice
being produced could be very negligible so not playing that up at
this time. Any icing would be light and on elevated surfaces.

Other factor to watch will be amount of instability that may form in
warm sector ahead of strong lift. While severe weather threat looks
to stay south of the immediate area, would not be surprised to see
some convection intermixed ahead of occluded front Thursday
afternoon. Small window of severe threat could get as close as
southern Wisconsin so worth keeping an eye on.

While not much discussion will be added for heavier snow threat
further north and west, parts of north central Wisconsin could see
some accumulation starting Wednesday night and into Thursday. If NAM
trends continue north and west, even this area might be spared brunt
of snow. Winter Storm Watch seems reasonable at this point until
confidence in track and amount of warm air grow.

In later forecast periods, another upper trough ejects out of
southern Plains Sunday. GFS has kept idea of this staying mainly
south of the area, but 09.12z ECMWF a bit further north and brings a
threat for accumulating snow back into the mix. Will have to watch
evolution of this feature as it draws closer. In fact, active
pattern continues into next week with warming trend. Long term
accumulation of all these events could complicate river levels.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Wednesday evening)
Issued at 653 PM CDT Tue Apr 9 2019

A frontogenetic band will move northeast across the area tonight
and Wednesday. Many of the meso models suggest that the
precipitation will only last 3 to 6 hours at the TAF sites. The
highest chances for KRST will range 10.14z to 10.20z and from
10.15z to 10.21z at KLSE. The precipitation will likely start out
as snow at KRST and rain at KLSE.

.HYDROLOGY...
Issued at 253 PM CDT Tue Apr 9 2019

Warmer and possibly more drier solution with this storm could lower
local flood risk with lighter overall precipitation totals. Amount
of precipitation upstream, and in Mississippi River headwaters,
could have higher impact though so will have to watch river trends
next week or two. Already seeing forecast rises or leveling off.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Flooding continues along the Mississippi River.

Heavy rain to snow to a wintry mix will impact the region
Wednesday into Friday. Total snow accumulations look to be an inch
or less with perhaps around 1/10 of an inch of icing. The rain
and melting snow could produce additional flooding. Travel impacts
can be expected where snow or a wintry mix falls. Isolated
thunderstorms are also possible.

In addition, winds gusting to 40 mph are expected Wednesday night
into Thursday. This could produce some power outages or tree
damage if enough freezing rain were to accumulate.
