This activity may produce enough heavy rain to produce some localized flash flooding. Farther to the northwest, the threat for heavy rain has diminished. The additional rainfall expected overnight should not be enough to produce flooding roughly northwest of a line from New Hampton Iowa to La Crosse to Tomah Wisconsin. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service La Crosse WI 1254 PM CDT Mon Sep 30 2019 .UPDATE...This Afternoon Issued at 1254 PM CDT Mon Sep 30 2019 With skies clearing earlier than expected along and south of Interstate 90, we will likely see mixing to at least 900 mb. Both DVN and MPX soundings had 925 mb temperatures above the 90th percentile. Due to this, raised the high temperatures into the lower 80s north of Interstate 94 and into the mid- and upper 80s elsewhere. Several record high temperatures may be tied or broken this afternoon. See the Climate Section below. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday Night) Issued at 240 AM CDT Mon Sep 30 2019 Get ready for some heat today as the area will be entrenched in the warm sector of deep low pressure moving northeast through MN today. Some showers and storms will be seen early this morning in strong moisture transport into/over a warm front pushing through. Latest CAMs show this shower/storm activity will remain mainly north of our area but could see some stragglers further south -north of I-94. After the front pushes north through the area by mid-late morning, will still have some low level cloudiness to contend with but mixing in the capped warm sector should scatter it out along and south of I- 90 with areas north of I-94 remaining mostly cloudy. Nonetheless, warm air advection with 925mb temps climbing into the 22-25C range will produce very warm temperatures at the surface with highs expected to top off in the 75-82 degree range along/north of I-94 with generally 82-85 expected across the rest of the area to the south. In addition, fairly uncomfortable dew points in the upper 60s to lower 70s will produce heat indices near 90 in some places south of I-94. The low continues to pull northeast into southern Ontario this evening, with a trailing cold front pushing into the area. Forcing from this front looks to initiate a scattered line of showers and storms as it presses into the area. May have to watch for a few stronger storms with moderate CAPE and bulk shear of 25-35kt. With southwest flow aloft, this front will not be in a rush to exit, in fact, lays up from approximately Green Bay through La Crosse and into central IA overnight. Near term models/CAMs show a mid-level wave ejecting northeast from the Plains and along this frontal boundary by Tuesday morning. This is expected to bring in another surge of moisture and lift over the frontal boundary for more showers and storms. Going into Tuesday night, models are locking on to a more significant wave of low pressure moving through IA/northern IL. Yet another surge of moisture and increased mid-level f-gen associated with the wave is expected to produce another round of heavier rainfall for areas mainly south of I-94. Any rainfall from tonight through Tuesday Night will have the potential of becoming heavy with localized flooding possible given high precipitable water/moisture-laden airmass in place. Will have to keep an eye on how this all evolves. Will be issuing a hydrologic outlook (ESF) this morning highlighting this concern. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Sunday) Issued at 240 AM CDT Mon Sep 30 2019 Heavier rain shifts east with the departing surface low Wednesday but will then be watching deep closed low/trough lifting northeast out of the Plains late Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. This will produce more showers but heavier rain stays north and east of our area. A strong ridge of high pressure builds/moves east across the area Thursday night through Friday for a brief dry period. Rain chances move back in and last through Saturday as a cold front pushes east across the area. Slight chance of showers linger into Sunday as cool mid-level trough rotates into the area. Temperature-wise...Look for highs slipping below normal from Wednesday through Sunday. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1254 PM CDT Mon Sep 30 2019 Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be found along the cold front as it moves southeast through the area later tonight. This front will move into KRST around 01.04z and at KLSE around 01.07z. In the wake of this front, ceilings will become MVFR and these low ceilings will persist through the remainder of the TAF period.
