Precip has diminished as expected this morning, with Lake Huron
increasingly becoming the dominant influence in low-level easterly
flow. The inversion is quite shallow (2-3k ft), but moisture
extends above the inversion to almost 700mb (per APX 12Z sounding
and Bufr). Bufr soundings indicate that moisture above the
inversion only slowly thins during the day, which will help
support precip into ne lower MI most of the day. The above
requires no significant changes to the going forecast. However,
have added freezing drizzle chances along with light snow showers,
as cloud-top temps warm from -11C to -9C, increasing the chances
of ice not being present in the cloud layer.

The other change to note was to reduce cloud cover in eastern
upper MI today. The morning has started out mostly sunny north of
the Straits, and guidance does not appreciably cloud them up until
after sunset. Have also boosted max temps 2-3f in eastern upper.

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal before next storm.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges: Light system snow ending near
daybreak. Easterly flow lake enhanced snow through much of today.

Synoptic analysis reveals rather progressive flow over the CONUS,
with weak ridging across the eastern third of the country, and a
trough digging into the four corners region. High pressure in
southern Ontario is aiding in light easterly winds at the surface. A
weak shortwave is currently moving through the flow over the
northern Great Lakes. This shortwave and a H700 thermal gradient is
currently supporting a swath of snow across northern Michigan and
northern Wisconsin. Although the H700 thermal gradient will not
change much through sunrise, snow should decrease into the morning
hours as the shortwave weakens and moves east into Quebec taking
weak synoptic support and moisture off to the east with it. Moisture
gets stripped out through day break and shortwave ridging moves into
the region. Early this morning, the heaviest snow has been moving
through the southern portion of the area, with lighter returns to
the north of the office. Radar returns have been weakening overall
since around 0400 UTC, and visibilities south of M-32 have been
between a mile and a half and two in the heaviest snow.

Our easterly winds will lead to light lake effect from Lake Huron
through the day, before inversion heights come sinking down to
around 1500 feet into the evening. This limiting factor, in addition
to very slowly backing winds through the day should keep
accumulations down to an inch of less through the day Monday. Winds
pick up very gradually through the day as the pressure gradient
slowly increases over us. Winds near the top of the boundary layer
are progged to be near 30, so isolated wind gusts into the 20s at
the surface can't be ruled out. This will lead to patchy blowing
snow and reduced visibilities in areas, especially near the lake
shore areas an in any higher terrain. The precip from the next
system should be arriving between 09 and 12Z in our southwest
counties. More details on this storm in the short-term section
below.

.SHORT TERM...(Tuesday through Wednesday)

...Accumulating snow on the way...

High Impact Weather Potential...Accumulating snow, heavy at times,
Tuesday through Tuesday night. Patchy freezing drizzle may mix in at
times Tuesday afternoon/early evening. In addition, gusty winds
Tuesday will create areas of blowing/drifting snow. All this will
combine to bring potentially dangerous travel conditions to northern
Michigan.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Mid-level ridging atop Michigan this
evening will quickly be replaced tonight through Tuesday by potent
shortwave troughing already evident on water vapor imagery early
this morning across the Four-Corners region. Attendant strengthening
surface low pressure is expected to trek from the south-central
plains through central IL to near Detroit during the day Tuesday,
bringing another impactful winter storm to northern Michigan early
Tuesday morning through Tuesday night. Broad cyclonic flow is
expected on the back side of the departing system on Wednesday,
allowing lake effect snow showers to continue for much of the day
downwind of Lake Michigan and Superior in the typical northwest flow
snow belts.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Precipitation type(s) and
amounts Tuesday through Wednesday.

By Monday evening, any lingering light easterly flow lake effect
snow showers/patchy freezing drizzle across northeast lower will be
waning with time as a weak thermal ridge gradually presses northward
through northern lower Michigan, significantly limiting any
remaining over-lake instability. Focus then transitions to the well-
advertised early Tuesday through Tuesday night time frame as
aforementioned low pressure will be working its way through the mid-
Mississippi Valley during the overnight hours with isentropically
driven snow chances arriving from southwest to northeast across
northern Michigan primarily between 09-15z. Snow continues Tuesday
morning, heavy at times (SLRs varying from 10-14:1) as the system's
warm conveyor belt and associated deeper moisture punch right into
lower Michigan. However, as has been alluded to in the previous few
forecast discussions, deeper moisture strips away to the east by mid
Tuesday afternoon into the early evening in relation to the system's
dry slot. This will result in lighter snow and an opportunity for a
bit of freezing drizzle to mix in during this time frame. Not
expecting a whole lot in the way of icing...perhaps a glaze across
our southern/southeastern counties where the loss of moisture is
expected to be more pronounced. By mid Tuesday evening into the
overnight hours, a resurgence of deep layer moisture and synoptic
support is anticipated as the mid-level wave treks across the area,
bringing another round of steadier/heavier snow across much of
northern Michigan once again before support gradually exits stage
right early Wednesday morning allowing any lingering activity to
become more snow showery in nature during the Wednesday morning
commute.

24-30 hour storm total snow accumulations from pre-dawn Tuesday
morning through sunrise Wednesday morning expected to range from 5-8
inches across the southwestern counties to 6-10 inches across the
remainder of the forecast area...even locally higher near the Lake
Huron shoreline of northeast lower and Chip/Mack counties as a
prolonged southeasterly boundary layer wind may help draw in added
moisture despite being below the 'magical' 13 C delta T (delta Ts
around 9-10 C). In addition to falling snow, heavy at times, will be
gusty (20-30 mph) east-southeasterly winds throughout much of the
day on Tuesday creating concern for blowing/drifting snow and a
further reduction to visibility. Winds relax quite a bit Tuesday
evening into the overnight while gradually backing more northerly
and eventually northwesterly by early Wednesday morning before
becoming gusty once again.

All in all, indications continue to point toward a period of
potentially dangerous travel early Tuesday through Tuesday night
with accumulating snow, patchy freezing drizzle, blowing/drifting
snow and snow-covered/slippery roads. In coordination with DTX, will
continue the Winter Storm Watch across the forecast area allowing
the day shift to get a look at 12z guidance before upgrading to
Winter Storm Warnings and/or Advisories.

Numerous lake effect snow showers are expected to round out the
remainder of the short term forecast period during much of the day
Wednesday, primarily in northwest flow lake belts of northwest lower
and eastern upper. Gusty northwest winds should limit the flake
size, but will still cause concern for more blowing/drifting and
pockets of greatly reduced visibility. Additional accumulation of up
to 3 inches in parts of Charlevoix, Antrim, Otsego and Kalkaska
counties, with 2 inches or less elsewhere downwind of the lakes.

High temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday ranging from the low 20s
across eastern upper to the mid-upper 20s across the remainder of
the area.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Sunday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Another potentially impactful winter
storm possible Thursday night through Friday night, although
confidence remains low.

By Wednesday night into early Thursday, warm air advection will be
underway across the western Great Lakes ahead of the next
approaching system off to our west. This should bring an end to any
lingering lake effect snow Wed. night before attention shifts to the
late Thursday through early Saturday time frame as another area of
low pressure strengthens across the Plains before trekking
northeastward towards the Great Lakes region. As always, the storm
track will be the biggest contributing factor to northern Michigan's
sensible weather during this period, which remains low confidence at
this point given a spread of solutions that range from rain Friday
transitioning to snow late in the day to a system that brings
another round of widespread, potentially heavy, accumulating snow.
Worth staying tuned to as we head through the week given a very
active storm track continuing across the midsection of the
country.

.DAY ONE...Today into Tonight.

Accumulating snow is expected to arrive from south to north very
late tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday.

A winter storm will bring accumulating snow to northern Michigan
Tuesday through Tuesday night. The heaviest snowfall is expected to
occur Tuesday morning and again Tuesday evening into the overnight
hours. Freezing drizzle or light freezing rain may also mix in
Tuesday afternoon, mainly south of M-32. In addition, gusty winds
will contribute to significant blowing and drifting snow, which may
linger into Wednesday. See ongoing winter storm watches for details.

Yet another potentially impactful winter storm is possible by
Friday.

There is the potential for ice jams to develop on area rivers.
Flooding may occur rapidly upstream from any ice jams that develop.
