...Might be hard to believe, but another wintry mix develops late
tonight...

High impact weather potential: Freezing drizzle may result in some
hazardous driving conditions by late tonight. More significant
freezing rain expected Thursday morning (see that information in the
short term section to follow).

Pattern synopsis/forecast: Extremely busy weather pattern continues
with northern Michigan lying squarely in active southwest flow
regime between Intermountain West centered trough axis and broad
East Coast ridging. Area actually catching just a bit of a reprieve
early this afternoon as lead impulse has exited, taking the earlier
widespread freezing drizzle and light snow along with it. Still
plenty of lingering overcast, with temperatures ranging from the
teens north, to the mid and upper 20s along our southern border.

All eyes for later tonight (and especially Thursday and Friday)
directed at what will eventually be full ejection of that
Intermountain West trough. This looks to drum up quite the storm
across northern Michigan to end this week. Very initial stages of
strengthening elevated warm air advection regime well ahead of this
system looks to bring a bit of a wintry mix to our area by later
tonight...with much more to follow on Thursday.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Addressing that late night
wintry mix potential and attendant headline considerations (with
much collaboration from short term forecaster).

Details: Quiet evening expected as mid levels remain dry and the
moisture through the low levels looks too shallow to support
freezing drizzle development. While guidance trends show just
transient pockets of deeper mid level moisture later tonight within
burgeoning elevated warm air advection regime, still concerned that
increasing moisture depth through the low levels may result in more
freezing drizzle development as we head toward Thursday morning.
Passing pockets of deeper moisture will likely bring a showery
freezing rain and sleet threat as elevated warm nose remains (much
more prominent the further south one goes). All told, not expecting
any real significant ice accumulations tonight, likely just a few
hundredths of an inch. However, more significant ice accumulations are
expected after sunrise Thursday.

Headline decisions: This was a tough one for sure. Tried to simplify
as much as possible, with significant icing Thursday giving way to
high winds and lake effect snows later Thursday night and Friday.
After much in-house collaboration with short term forecaster, have
decided to issue a winter storm warning for eastern upper and
northwest lower Michigan (primarily along and west of Interstate 75)
from later tonight/Thursday morning, running right through Friday.
This covers both the freezing rain as well as what will likely be
periods of whiteout conditions during that late Thursday
night/Friday period with lake snows and very gust west to northwest
winds. Winter weather advisory for points east of Interstate 75
later tonight through Thursday to account for freezing rain.
Possible at last parts of this advisory might need to be extended
into Thursday night and Friday as strong winds blow lake snows well
inland.

High Impact Weather Potential: Freezing rain and snow accumulations
tonight through Friday morning. Gusty winds after ice accumulations.
Lake effect snow Friday.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges: Timing/amounts/exact locations
of precipitation type and accumulations tonight through Friday
morning. Gusty winds Thursday night through Friday after ice
accumulations that fell and accrued on trees/powerlines. Lake effect
snow accumulations through Friday.

Downright nasty weather... The models are in consensus for a rapidly
deepening low pressure system which is forecast to go through
bombogenesis (1004-1005mb Thursday morning to 979-980mb by Friday
morning) as it traverses from the Mississippi River Valley to near
James Bay during this time period. WAA precipitation from
aforementioned system begins impacting the forecast area by the
morning hours Thursday. As the mid-level warmer air continues it's
advection northward during the strengthening of this storm system
the mix will progress northward as well, reaching all of eastern
upper by the late morning/early afternoon hours Thursday. As surface
temperatures rise as the center of the low pressure system continues
to deepen and reach into northern lower Michigan, any freezing
precip will transition to all rain over northeastern lower Michigan
(mainly east of the I-75 corridor during the afternoon for at least
a few hours. Surface temperatures are progged to stay at or below
freezing throughout the entire day Thursday near the straits and
west of I-75 over northwest lower Michigan...this area is forecast
to receive the highest amounts of ice accumulations at this time
(between 0.25 and 0.35"), but it may change as the models continue
to fine tune the exact path of this storm system. The low pressure
system exits the forecast area to the northeast Thursday night,
still strengthening and tightening pressure gradients, allowing even
colder air to begin to filter into the forecast area on strong
northwesterly to west-northwesterly winds, gradually transitioning
any wintry mix and/or freezing precipitation to all snow and be
enhanced by Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Much colder air and
gusty winds will continue filtering in behind the departing system
into Friday with 850mb temperatures reaching -20C and colder with
ample moisture and west-northwesterly winds producing lake
effect/enhanced snow and blowing snow for the favorable areas in
eastern upper and northwest lower Michigan through Friday and into
Saturday morning. Highest snow accumulations are expected to be
between 4-6" at this time...with locally higher amounts possible.

Any freezing precipitation that accumulated on power lines and trees
will become of great concern as these gusty winds reach down to the
surface Thursday night through Friday...potentially creating power
outages. Winds at the top of the boundary layer Friday reach in
excess of 40kts in forecast soundings...can't rule out some of these
gusts reaching the surface as this storm system deepens rapidly over
the forecast area.

High temperatures will be in the 20s over eastern upper and 30s over
northern lower. Highs Friday will only reach into the teens. Lows
will be in the teens to low 20s single digits to teens above zero
Friday morning.

Lake effect snow will diminish throughout the morning Saturday as
high pressure and drier air move in behind the departing system.

through next weekend. Another storm system will approach the Great
Lakes region during mid-week next work week.
