Impactful weather: Winter storm arriving tonight with snow and ice
accumulations.
Pattern synopsis and forecast:
A large expanse of sfc high pressure covered much of Canada early
this morning, with a ridge axis that extends southward into the
eastern Conus. Deepening low pressure was ejecting into the central
Plains, associated with a large closed upper low over the western
conus. Impressive forcing with all the players is currently ongoing
from the Dakotas back through the Ohio valley, with nice diffluent
pattern aloft, upper jet dynamics, strong DPVA and WAA. This was
resulting in an expanding precipitation field off to our south and
west. In addition, a tight pressure gradient around the storm was
leading to gusty winds. Upper ridging was over nrn Michigan, which
lies between the storm and the high pressure. We have an increasing
easterly winds, with lots of dry mid level air, but while also
seeing that pesky shallow moisture still stuck underneath a strong
low level inversion. This has continued to lead to low clouds across
most of the region.
The well advertised storm system will make steady eastward progress
through tonight, making it to the mid and upper Mississippi valley
by Sunday morning. While there will be some increasing initial
ejected shortwave energy into nrn Michigan today, we are still going
to have some fairly dry low to mid level air in persistent easterly
flow through 6kft or so. This will more than likely not be overcome,
until maybe toward very late afternoon/nightfall in the GTV Bay
region. We remain underneath the mid level ridge over this time, and
we;ll likely see some returns on radar, but don't know how great
chances are for precipitation to hit ground.
Going through tonight, now things start cranking up. We lose the
ridge to the east, and the diffluent upstream pattern aloft moves
in, with all the aforementioned forcing mechanisms and deeper
moisture to saturate the atmosphere. During the evening, the warm
nose slides into areas focused on areas west of I-75 and generally
south of M-72, for a snow/sleet to freezing rain scenario. This
hasn't really changed from previous forecasts, nor have the ice
accumulations, which appear largely between 1-2 tenths. There could
be a bigger impact of the accumulating ice, due to minimal snow on
the front end. Very slick roads and heavier ice on power lines are
definitely still in play. Deeper moisture and introduction of ice in
the cloud into the overnight suggests a transition back to mainly
snow. Further north, less freezing rain (none in eastern upper), and
primarily a wet snow event, but the better snow accumulations are
expected Sunday (see more on that below). Looking like 1-3 inches
tonight for nrn lower and much of Mackinac county, with up to an
inch in Chippewa county.
Highs today will range from around 30F in eastern upper, to the low
to mid 30s over much of nrn lower. Lows tonight will be in the upper
teens to lower half of the 20s most areas.

.SHORT TERM...(Sunday through Monday)

High impact weather potential: Winter storm through Sunday. Possibly
some freezing drizzle/rain south of M-72 late Saturday into Sunday.
Near blizzard conditions possible through Sunday morning north of M-
32 into eastern upper.
Models are continuing to be in fairly good consensus with the track
of a strong system developing over the central Plains going through
the southern Great Lakes region...which would be a good snow maker
for northern Michigan. Sunday looks like it could just be downright
nasty...possibly near blizzard conditions during the the early
morning hours Sunday with heavy snow and strong easterly winds
gusting to 40+ mph over the Tip of the Mitt, Straits area, and along
the northern Lake Huron shorelines. Using QPF and snow ratios of
around 10:1 to 12:1...locations could see 5-8 inches of snow through
the day Sunday, while locally higher amounts will be possible
towards the Tip of the Mitt and eastern upper...some totals of 12+
inches will not be out of the question. Will continue messaging
about the forecast impacts and stressing that weekend holiday travel
will be impacted...especially Sunday. There is also the chance of a
warm nose getting into the southern end of the forecast area as the
aforementioned system passes through Michigan Sunday
afternoon...this could pose some freezing drizzle/rain
threats...mainly south of M-72 at this time. Chances for freezing
drizzle may mix in with snow through the early morning hours of
Monday as drier air begin filtering into the area...with moisture
not reaching -10C anymore in forecast soundings.
Headlines: Went ahead and hoisted Winter Weather Warnings for
Mackinac County, northern lower (mostly north of the M-32 corridor),
and Leelanau County...these are the locations that have the greatest
potential for warning criteria snow and should be all snow for
precip type. Chippewa County is only an advisory as the northern
extent to the best moisture and stronger synoptic support stays
south. Our remaining counties we decided to keep in the Winter Storm
Watch since there is the potential of accumulating ice...along with
the strong winds forecast. Tomorrow we will have a better idea on
exactly what precip type and what type of accumulations we may see
before hoisting an Advisory or Warning.
Winds will diminish in intensity and back to northerly behind the
departing storm system and high pressure building in from the
central Plains late Sunday night into early Monday. Said high
pressure...along with much drier air...will produce decreasing
cloudiness throughout the day Monday and precipitation-free weather
through most of Tuesday. Tuesday afternoon/evening may see some very
light snow showers with an upper level wave, shallow moisture, and a
bit of lake help. Temperatures will be generally in the upper 20s to
30s during the afternoon hours, while in the low teens to low 20s
overnight.

A weak upper level low and moisture trek through the Great Lakes
Tuesday night. This will produce some light snow showers. The
pattern then looks to remain active with a few different
disturbances going through the Great Lakes region through the long
term period...expect a few shots of precipitation here and there
through the remainder of the week. Temperatures appear to remain in
the low to mid 30s during the daytime, while lows will be in the
teens to mid 20s.

Solid cloud cover stretches across the Great Lakes with generally
MVFR CIGS...although there are some holes in the lower cloud
cover and spotty VFR CIGS. But MVFR CIGS will be predominant
tonight and much of Saturday.
Meanwhile, another strong storm system is organizing over the
front range of the Rockies this evening. System will deepen and
migrate into the Midwest on Saturday, crossing the lower lakes
region on Sunday. This system will spread a swath of heavier
wintry precipitation (largely snow) into northern Michigan
starting later in the day Saturday, and becoming heavy late
Saturday night into Sunday. Gusty east winds will accompany this
storm with the strongest winds Saturday night into Sunday.

The pressure gradient will be continually tightening up today into
Sunday, as a well advertised storm system gradually works eastward
and into the region, bringing gale force winds and a mix of rain and
snow. Precipitation will slowly taper off, and winds start to weaken
late Sunday through Sunday night, as the storm departs east. Winds
look a bit stronger in the latest data, and most all nearshore
waters will be in a gale warning.
