Morning composite analysis reveals respectable mid level ridging
just upstream through the Midwest and attendant surface high
pressure centered across Ontario and stretching down through the
Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. Very strong subsidence on the
descending branch of an upper jet core overhead this morning...and
resulting dry air (surface dewpoints are below 0F across Ontario)
has/is settling into the Great Lakes and already producing quite
a few breaks in the lake induced cloud cover over northern
Michigan. A few "blips" of lake induced precip are still showing
up on KAPX radar, although those will be fairly short lived.

Surface high pressure/subsidence and very dry air spilling into
region from the north on veering low level flow should have decent
success in thinning out cloud cover today. That said, clearing
will be offset to some degree by lake stratus pressing in off
Lake Huron via eventual NE flow as well as increasing high cloud
cover coming in from the southwest. Have made some cosmetic tweaks
for forecast sky cover today with the greatest amount of sunshine
across Eastern Upper Michigan and down through interior Northern
Lower Michigan.

Otherwise, breezy and certainly cooler as compared to the last
couple of days, with highs in the middle 20s to lower 30s but a
touch of wind chill (teens and 20s) through the day.

.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

...Wintry mix to develop later tonight...

High impact weather potential: Wintry mix of snow, sleet, and
freezing rain to bring increasingly hazardous travel conditions
later tonight into Monday.

Pattern synopsis/forecast: An airmass at least a bit more resembling
typical northern Michigan January weather in the process of building
into the region as cold air advection further matures behind
departing shortwave trough and attendant weak surface reflection.
Low level winds veering more northerly on south side of large
western Ontario centered high pressure only helping the cooling
cause, with most areas now falling into the upper 20s and lower 30s.
Plenty of clouds out there with moisture trapped below a rather
stout low level subsidence inversion. Inversion top temperatures
just cold enough to entice a bit of lake moisture contribution,
helping kick off even a few scattered flurries/very light snow
showers.

Surface high pressure will build into and through the area today,
quickly followed by its mid level likeness this evening. Elongated
trough axis, currently moving across the west coast, will move
steadily east into the northern Plains by early Monday morning. A
rather vigorous elevated warm air advection regime will develop out
ahead of it, interacting with both Pacific and western Gulf of
Mexico moisture plumes to drum up what looks to be a rather
impactful winter storm for at least parts of the northern Great
Lakes by later tonight and Monday.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Addressing late night wintry
mix potential and snow accumulations. In coordination with short
term forecaster will need to address winter weather headline
concerns.

Details: Rather quiet for much of the near term as that surface high
and mid level ridge axis dominates our weather today into this
evening. Winds continue to steadily veer, becoming northeast and
easterly by later today, which will usher in a much drier low level
airmass (surface dewpoints well down into the teens). This should,
at least in theory, scour out much of the low clouds as we head
through the day. However, high clouds will be on the increase,
especially across northwest lower Michigan. While by no means cold,
airmass will be notably more chilly than the past few days, with
highs in the 20s to lower 30s.

Top-down saturation begins to ramp up tonight well ahead of that
approaching trough. Rapid maturation of low level jet should
complete the saturation process from west to east as we head through
the early morning hours, likely taking until near or shortly after
sunrise for precipitation to reach the surface across far northeast
lower and northeast sections of eastern upper Michigan.
Precipitation type remains a much more formidable forecast
challenge, with such strong warm air advection working over an
initially cool and very dry airmass. Gotta believe evaporational
cooling will result in mostly snow/ice pellets initially, with
further development of elevated warm nose bringing freezing rain
concerns by sunrise, especially for areas south of Grand Traverse
Bay. Heavier snow amounts and icing potential hold off until Monday
morning, but still could be looking at upwards of a half inch to
inch of new snow/sleet along and west of Interstate 75, along with
some very light ice accumulation where freezing rain occurs.

.SHORT TERM...(Monday through Tuesday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow transitioning to a
wintry mix is expected to lead to hazardous travel conditions across
much of northern Michigan Sunday night - Monday.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Little change in overall thinking from 24
hours ago. By Monday morning, a fairly active upper-level pattern is
expected to be evident across the CONUS with ridging centered over
the eastern Great Lakes and longwave troughing anchored across
western NOAM. Closed upper-level low pressure is expected to be
trekking eastward across Saskatchewan with an elongated area of
attendant surface low pressure draped from south/southwest Canada
into the northern/central plains...set to impact the region locally
through the day Monday with a wintry mix of precipitation. A brief
reprieve from wintry weather is anticipated Monday night as mid-
level ridging quickly crosses the area overhead before troughing
reemerges over the western lakes Tuesday with increased chances for
lake effect/lake enhanced snow showers.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges: PoPs, precip-type and snow/ice
amounts through the forecast period.

Primary focus continues to revolve around the aforementioned storms
system set to cross the region late tonight into Monday. Guidance
remains in fairly decent agreement with regards to isentropically
driven snow arriving from southwest to northeast across the forecast
area prior to sunrise Monday morning. This snow could certainly pack
a little punch for the Monday morning rush hour given formidable
isentropic ascent overhead, strong omega pegged squarely in a 6,000
ft. deep DGZ and deep moisture through the column. Primary threat
initially would be reduced visibilities in moderate to heavy snow
for at least a brief window of time. Also by early Monday morning, a
tightening pressure gradient is expected to lead to wind gusts of 25-
35 mph (highest near the Great Lakes shorelines), which are expected
to persist through much of the day. By mid-morning, latest trends
continue to suggest that precipitation will be gradually
transitioning from snow to freezing rain across our far southwestern
counties, which will continue to gradually spread northeastward as
the day wears on. Still wouldn't be surprised to see many locations,
primarily south of M-32, switch to all rain for a period of time
Monday afternoon before temperatures gradually cool on the backside
of the system as precipitation diminishes late Monday afternoon
eventually departs entirely Monday evening.

With respect to snow/ice accumulation, little change from
yesterday's thinking with an inch or two of heavy/wet snow near
Grand Traverse Bay and along the M-55 corridor, 1-3 inches from M-72
northward to M-32, and 2-5 inches north of M-32 to the Straits.
Across eastern upper, higher snowfall totals expected given lift
maximized across the far north and the dominant precip type
remaining mostly snow through much of the event, generally ranging
from 5-9 inches, although could foresee a couple spots exceeding
that in both eastern Chip/Mack. Do have some concern that strong
winds may decrease flake size and hinder accumulation to some
extent, but certainly in regards to snow accumulation, eastern upper
will feel the brunt of impact from that. However, northern lower's
greater impact may wind up coming from freezing rain during the day
Monday. Have bumped up ice accumulations more in line with
WPC...generally ranging from around a tenth of inch west of US-131
near GTV Bay (perhaps a few hundredths more than that) to less than
a tenth elsewhere. Primary impacts across the forecast area will be
low visibilities and slippery roadways leading to hazardous driving
conditions as a result of the snow/ice combination, but given the
wet/heavy nature of the snow (SLRs from 8-12:1) and ice accretion on
trees/power lines combined with increasingly gusty southeast winds,
suppose there could be an isolated power outage concern as well.
Have opted to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for much of the
forecast area given all of the above that runs generally from 09/10z
Monday through 21/00z. Only counties left out were Gladwin and
Arenac given sub-advisory snow and ice, but they may certainly be
added with the next forecast package as details continue to become
more refined.

Aforementioned brief reprieve in the wintry weather is expected
Monday night, although there could be a little lingering
drizzle/freezing drizzle in spots as mid-level moisture scours out,
although think this will wind up being more the exception rather
than the rule. Focus then transitions to another rather robust
incoming mid-level shortwave, progged to pinwheel from near
International Falls southeastward towards northern Michigan through
the day Tuesday. The result expected to be lake enhanced snow
showers, most numerous across northwest lower and eastern upper
Michigan. Additional snow accumulation of perhaps an inch or two,
mainly west of I-75 tapering to under an inch east of I-75.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Saturday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Lake enhanced/lake effect snow
possible at times Tuesday night through the end of the forecast
period on Saturday.

Lake effect snow chances continue Tuesday night-Wednesday under
primarily northwesterly flow, aided occasionally by a subtle
shortwave or two pinwheeling around parent troughing. Tough to
pinpoint the hardest hit areas at this juncture given it'll be
largely driven by wind direction, although it does look like some
accumulation is certainly viable as forecast soundings suggests a
virtually non-existent subsidence inversion at times combined with
plenty of moisture extending upwards of 500 mb. Little change beyond
Wednesday with broad troughing continuing over the Great Lakes and
occasional perturbations bringing synoptic support and moisture to
the region.

through the western Great Lakes late tonight through Monday. This
system will bring wind/wintry mix of precipitation/MVFR-IFR
