...Late autumn storm impact begins tonight...

High Impact Weather Potential: Heavy precip tonight. Wintry
precip at times, especially in eastern upper MI overnight.
Becoming windy overnight.

1000mb low pressure is moving east of Lake Superior and
weakening. An associated cold front is exiting across Lake Huron,
and pre-frontal showers are long gone. That front links up with a
warm front that extends ne from organizing low pressure in the
southern high plains. Substantial clearing has occurred behind the
front, though post- frontal low clouds are already present in
eastern upper MI, and are expanding back into nw lower.

Today's wx is uneventful. Low clouds will gradually push back into
much of northern MI, though there are a few gaps over eastern
upper MI and eastern Superior. On balance it will be mostly cloudy
day, though eastern upper MI could be partly sunny for part of the
morning, and places near Saginaw Bay for part of the afternoon.
Another relatively mild day is on tap, with highs near 40f to the
mid 40s.

Tonight's wx will become eventful. Surface low initially near KC
will lift ne, and be in central WI by morning, deepening slightly
under 990mb. Rapidly intensifying theta-e advection in the warm
conveyor belt will race into lower MI during the night, before
moving off to the east. The cold conveyor belt lifts into upper MI
overnight, well n and ne of the 500mb closed low lifting to the
IA/WI border. Widespread precip will surge northward into northern
MI during the night, and will be heavy at times, as we find
ourselves at the nose of a southerly 50kt 850mb jet that pokes
into southern lower MI. Intense moisture transport will result in
QPF totals of 0.75-1.0 inch in the south third of the forecast
area, dwindling to about a third of an inch over Whitefish Bay.
Also, given the SPC day 1 outlook, and an axis of 200-300j/kg of
MuCape that develops into central lower MI overnight, thunder has
been added to the far south late tonight.

P-type...our antecedent airmass is rather mild, with temps starting
our 40-45 late this afternoon, and dew points near freezing.
Developing and strengthening easterly winds will not bring
substantially cooler air to the region, thanks to the buffer of Lake
Huron. Perhaps we can see some snow mix in at onset as precip
invades northern lower from s to n, especially over the higher
elevations of the interior. Otherwise, the vast majority of precip
in northern lower MI will be rain. Eastern upper does not get as
much marine influence with an easterly fetch, and their temps will
be cooler, but how much? The usual favored gridded guidance
(BCConsShort) still looks a little too cool in eastern upper MI,
just given the mild antecedent air. Precip arrives is force up
that way shortly after midnight, and will be more emphatically
mixy. Snow will be most favored in western and central Chip Co.
But even there, it is likely too warm/mixy for decent accums. Will
keep snow amounts below 2". Winds will be increasingly gusty as
well up that way (see below), so some limited blowing/drifting
will develop if and as we deposit snow.

Winds...main concern for increasing winds is overnight tonight. Just
ahead of the surface low, and south of high pressure in far northern
Ontario, easterly winds will ramp up in the tightening pressure
gradient. There is some potential for storm-force winds over the
waters of far northern Lake MI and Huron. And coastal counties in
this area run a risk of advisory-level wind gusts, especially
along the coast. Where the winter storm watch is not in affect,
wind advisories will be posted in the Straits area, Beaver Isl,
and far northern lower MI, for late tonight into Wed morning.

Min temps low-mid 30s. In northern lower, those mins will be early,
with rising temps overnight.

.SHORT TERM...(Wednesday through Thursday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Moderate-high

...Strong low pressure system continues across the area Wednesday,
bring soaking rains, snow, and very strong winds...

Synopsis/Forecast: As forecast the shortwave responsible for the
upcoming storm system is currently digging into the southwest. This
pivots northeast through Tuesday so that by Wednesday morning the
strong cut off low is over southern Wisconsin, and will become
stacked as it treks northeast near the tip of the Mitt. After riding
up the southwest-northeast orientated thermal boundary the surface
low will likely be at peak intensity over central Lake Michigan 12z
Wednesday. After which time it begins to occlude over nrn lower
Michigan while continuing its east-northeast trek. Precipitation
will remain all rain across nrn lower through the daylight hours as
profiles stay above freezing. The dry slot will sweep through from
about 10am to 3pm, mainly affecting nrn lower, but also possibly
creeping up into ern upper. This will create a lull in rain
intensity over nrn lower as deeper moisture gets stripped out.
Current thinking is that Wednesday rain totals south of the bridge
will be anywhere from 0.25" south to 0.75" near the straits. In ern
upper precip type and amount becomes trickier. Guidance has been
consistent with taking the surface low through the tip of the mitt
for the past few runs now, which pushes the heaviest snow just to
the north of previously thought. Forecast soundings show a limited
depth to the DGZ and we may even loose saturation above the -10 C
level causing a brief period of much reduced snowfall intensity with
some drizzle/freezing drizzle mixed in during the late morning.
There is also uncertainty regarding exactly how far north any
elevated warm nose gets near midday. As of now the NAM is the only
one to have this warm nose. Surface temperatures could warm into the
mid and upper 30s, especially in southern Mackinac Co, further
reducing accumulations there. Overall a tight gradient is expected
across ern upper with very little in St. Ignace to the heaviest
amounts along and north of M-28.

As far as winds are concerned, near midday we may get a brief lull
(at least over land) with the center of low pressure passing
directly overhead. Stronger winds out on the lakes will continue the
lake shore flooding concerns for Lake Huron Wednesday morning, then
Lake Michigan in the late afternoon and evening. There are still
some concerns for Grand Traverse Bay Wednesday night with northerly
winds getting funneled into the Bay.

Heading into the evening CAA on the backside will sweep over nrn
lower, inducing lake effect in the typical NW flow belts. As winds
remain gusty some blow/drifting snow is possible even though total
snowfall amounts across nrn lower may only be an inch or so.
Thursday morning will continue the light NW lake effect as CAA
continues on northerly winds behind the departing system. However
surface high pressure pushing through central Ontario will help dry
things out. Along with increasing subsidence and sinking inversion
heights the morning snow showers should not last long. Despite
anomalously strong upper level ridging poking north into the Great
Lakes, Thursday's highs will be noticeably colder as Canadian air
pushes into the region. The continued drying through the column may
even give us some peaks of sun in the afternoon.

High Impact Weather: Another potentially strong storm over Weekend

Thanks to the strong Canadian high passing by to our north, Friday
will continue the tranquil and mostly dry conditions. Don't think
precip chances really enter the picture until Friday night as
synoptic moisture returns ahead of the next Plains system. A deep
west coast trough with a kicker wave rounding its base allows energy
to eject out into the central High Plains. This energy quickly
becomes a bowling ball of a cut-off low barreling straight toward
the Great Lakes before dropping south. Of course all this could (and
likely will) change in the next few days. But guidance has been
suggesting for a while now that this could bring widespread rain,
snow, and everything in between. Behind this system weak high
pressure moves in to give a quieter start to the workweek.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)

Low pressure will continue to make its way eastward thru Lake
Superior overnight...reaching the Ontario/Quebec border by
Tuesday morning. After an area of light rain moved Northern Lower
Michigan this evening...dry wx will return to our area overnight
but cigs will diminish to MVFR as lower clouds move into Northern
Michigan.

A much stronger area of low pressure will lift NE out of the
Central Plains...reaching the Western Great Lakes region by late
Tuesday night. Dry but mostly cloudy weather is expected on
Tuesday ahead of this system...with chances of rain quickly
increasing Tuesday night as this system approaches.

SW winds AOB 10 kts overnight will become westerly on Tuesday...
and will then shift to the east ahead of our next low pressure
system Tuesday night.

Easterly winds will crank up tonight, ahead of low pressure
heading toward WI. Storm-force winds are possible for a period
late tonight into Wed morning, especially over far northern Lake
MI and far northern Lake Huron (this includes the Straits of
Mackinac). The storm moves directly over northern MI on Wednesday,
with very strong w to n winds behind it.

A winter storm will affect northern Michigan Tuesday night into
Wednesday night. This will impact travel just before the
Thanksgiving holiday. The worst conditions are expected in eastern
upper Michigan, which will likely see significant snow
accumulations, along with blowing and drifting snow. See ongoing
watches for details.

In addition, gale and possibly even storm force wind gusts are
expected overnight Tuesday into Wednesday night.

Lakeshore flooding is expected on the coastlines of Lake Huron
and Lake Michigan Tuesday night into Wednesday night.

There is potential for another significant winter storm to impact
the region this weekend.
