...Accumulating lake effect snow develops later today and tonight...

High impact weather potential: Accumulating lake snows likely to
result in some more slick driving conditions later today through
tonight (and likely continuing right through Wednesday night).

Pattern synopsis/forecast: Winter storm that brought significant
snows to eastern upper Michigan and a wintry mess to those in
northern lower has now exited well off to our east. Broad
troughiness remains in its wake, extending from central Canada down
through the western Great Lakes. Several shortwaves embedded within
this trough, the most notable of which is closed mid level
circulation digging southeast across northwest Ontario, with a
secondary much more subtle wave racing east across Minnesota. All
the real cold air definitely tied to the former, with -20c H8
temperatures rotating into Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Much milder
conditions closer to home, with most areas still running several
degrees above freezing at this early hour...no doubt supporting some
very slippery side road conditions with water laying on top of
earlier ice.

Reprieve from the active weather will be a very brief one, as both
those upstream waves begin to impact the northern Great Lakes.
Current cold air lacking Minnesota wave set to cross southern lower
Michigan later this morning and afternoon, with surge of much
stronger and sustained cold air advection set to arrive later this
afternoon and overnight as cold air wraps around that Ontario closed
low. While the former will bring the threat for a few rain/snow
showers, the arrival of those much colder temperatures looks to set
up a rather prolonged lake effect snow event across the traditional
snow belt locations later today through Wednesday night.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Lake effect snow accumulations
tonight.

Details: Initial wave set to cross southern Michigan later this
morning and afternoon. Lack of any real cold air supports the threat
for a rain/snow mixture, and most of that falling south of M-72.
Attention then turns to arrival of secondary shortwave trough and
surge of much colder air later this afternoon and overnight. Wave
itself likely to bring a few snow showers along with it. However,
main focus will be on burgeoning lake response as H8 temperatures
steadily drop into the negative mid teens overnight...setting up an
impressive over-water thermal gradient. Descent synoptic moisture
contribution, development of aligned northwest flow/good speed shear
through the boundary layer, and an in-cloud thermal environment
centered in the dendritic growth layer should only help the snow-
producing cause. One significant negative for heavy snow remains a
relatively low inversion height, with lake-induced equilibrium
levels hovering between 5kft-7kft (highest across Lake Superior).
This should definitely throttle back on snow intensity and
accumulations, but could see simple persistence of snow showers
bring at least a couple inches of snow to those traditional
northwest flow snow belts of both eastern upper and northwest lower
Michigan by Wednesday morning. Of course, any enhanced mesoscale
convergence axis/dominate band development could tip the scales to
isolated higher totals. More snow to follow for these same areas
Wednesday and Wednesday night (see short term section below for
those details). Colder temperatures, plenty of clouds, and lighter
snow showers/flurries expected outside those traditional lake effect
areas.

.SHORT TERM...(Wednesday through Thursday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating lake effect snow chances
Wednesday through Thursday, primarily across eastern upper and
northwest lower Michigan.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Broad troughing aloft is expected to be
encompassing the eastern one-third of the CONUS with ridging evident
across the Intermountain West by the start of the forecast period
Wednesday morning. As a result, sufficient lake induced instability
and ongoing lake effect snow showers are expected to continue across
parts of northern Michigan Wednesday into Thursday, even as heights
begin to rise and high pressure begins to trek into the region from
the north throughout the day Thursday.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges: PoPs/snow amounts through the
forecast period.

Focus revolves around lake effect snow chances and accumulation
through the forecast period given plenty of cold air aloft evident
by H8 temperatures varying from -16 to -13 C throughout the day
Wednesday into Thursday. As a result, ample over-lake instability
with allow for lake processes to continue. The primary flow regime
continues to be northwesterly through much of the day Wednesday
before subtly veering more north-northwesterly by Wednesday
evening/night. Model soundings continue to look fairly favorable,
suggesting plenty of moisture above a 7-8 kft inversion during the
day Wednesday before slowly sinking toward 4-6 kft late Wednesday
into Wednesday night. Combined with fairly unidirectional speed
shear through the boundary layer and a connection to Lake Superior,
there could certainly be some dominant banding for a period of time,
primarily during the day Wednesday, although do have some concerns
as to how much diurnal disruption there will be.

Less impressive forecast soundings and overall moisture/support as
we head into Thursday. None the less, lake effect snow showers are
expected to continue with the steadiest falling west of US-131, GTV
Bay region and points west given winds continuing their slow veer
more NNW and eventually nearly due northerly by Thursday evening.

With respect to accumulation, generally a couple of inches are
expected across northern Chippewa County and over much of northwest
lower during the day Wednesday with another couple of inches
possible in more NNW flow favored snow belts, including the GTV Bay
region, Wednesday night. Some locally higher accumulation certainly
isn't out of the question if a dominant band or two is able to
develop). Lesser accumulation expected for Thursday given
diminishing lake effect favorability...perhaps up to another inch or
so in NNW/N flow snow belts.

High temps Wednesday topping out in the low-mid 20s area-wide before
turning even colder on Thursday as highs are expected to struggle to
reach much above the upper teens over the U.P. and across north-
central and northeast lower. Low 20's in far southern and
southwestern counties.

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal for now.

Perhaps a few lingering light lake effect snow showers/flurries
Thursday night near the Lake MI shoreline, but with little impact
expected as a narrow ridge of high pressure continues to slowly
press into the region. Otherwise, mid-level troughing is expected to
be renewed by the start of the weekend as a short wave presses into
the region later Friday-Saturday...perhaps leading to another round
of light snow/lake enhanced snow.

IFR to MVFR cigs overnight, as warm/moist low level air is in place
behind an occluded front that swept across the region Monday
evening. Cigs will head somewhat higher as cooler air returns during
the day on Tuesday, but that will also result in lake effect showers
forming late in the day.

Gusty westerly winds will diminish somewhat overnight. Winds will
veer nw and become gusty again late Tuesday.
