.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Impactful weather: Freezing rain and ice accumulation in eastern
upper Michigan. Windy with potential lakeshore flooding issues.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

High amplitude upper air pattern across the country early this
morning, with ridging pushing into the eastern conus, and over the
west coast, while deep troughing and an associated deep sfc low
dominating the central conus. Widespread precipitation was occurring
with this storm system, forced by strong DPVA, impressive upper jet
dynamics from a 120kt+ jet rounding the base of the upper trough,
strong theta-e advection via a 50-55kt LLJ and deep Gulf of Mexico
moisture tap (PWATs in excess of 1.00"), and frontal forcing/low
level convergence. Certainly an impressive system. Some of the
initial warm advection was pressing through eastern upper, producing
a band of light snow/rain mix, while the air mass in nrn lower
remains dry enough (mainly below 6-7kft), and not into the strong
forcing yet for any precipitation. That same strong forcing and
deeper moisture was however, making steady progress N/NE, with the
widespread rain working into/through Lake Michigan attm.

Not much has changed in the forecast. The initial WAA wing will
continue to lift north through eastern upper early this morning,
while the aforementioned strong forcing mechanisms and deep moisture
will sweep in over all of nrn Michigan through the day. Widespread
precipitation is expected through this morning/early afternoon,
before an easily identifiable dry slot strips out the moisture
aloft, and precipitation turns more drizzly in nature through this
evening. Then, there will be a strong shortwave (currently in
carving into west Texas) that lifts up into nrn Michigan late
tonight, bringing even stronger deep layer -divQ and widespread
precipitation. Thermodynamically, an above freezing elevated deep
warm nose of air lifts through all of nrn Michigan by daybreak, and
remains through tonight. Sfc temperatures meanwhile, will be above
freezing in all of nrn lower Michigan. Thus, just rain is still
expected. In eastern upper, especially Chippewa county, readings
will be lingering around the freezing mark into much of this
morning, resulting in a decent period of freezing rain and ice
accumulations. While these sfc temperatures are expected to rise
slightly above freezing this afternoon (change to rain), readings
might be able to fall back to around freezing again tonight. This
could provide another bout of freezing rain. Latest data suggests
that one to two tenths of an inch of ice accumulation is possible,
again, primarily for Chippewa county. Will keep the Winter Weather
Advisory, but not issue another potential Advisory there for
possible freezing rain again tonight. Will let the current headline
complete it's course. Total rain totals through tonight (actually
Monday morning) are expected to reach 1-1.50" for most all of nrn
Michigan. This rain, wet ground and continued snowmelt, will allow
for streams and rivers to rise, with possible lowland/river flooding
developing.

Winds will be pretty gusty out of the east/SE for much of nrn
Michigan through tonight especially coastal areas around Lake Huron,
as well as coastal areas of Leelanau and Mackinac counties in Lake
Michigan. The high Great Lakes water levels, combined with these
winds, may result in high waves and resultant Lakeshore flooding and
beach erosion. Lakeshore flood advisories will be issued for these
areas.

Highs today will be in the middle 30s to lower 40s over most of the
region, but downsloping easterly winds across the GTV Bay area,
leading to mid and upper 40s. Lows tonight will be around freezing
or in the low 30s in eastern upper, to the mid 30s to lower 40s in
nrn lower.

.SHORT TERM...(Monday through Tuesday)
Issued at 332 AM EST Sun Dec 29 2019

High Impact Weather Potential: Ongoing precip to transition to
mostly snow by Monday night.

Synopsis: A vigorous shortwave will be moving across the Great Lakes
to begin the period as more general troughing encompasses much of
the central CONUS. Solid curvature and 500 mb jet max speeds upwards
of 100 kts will provide excellent support to rapidly develop and
deepen a cyclone along an existing cold front associated with a
weakening cyclone to the west. This strengthening system will
progress northward through the forecast area beginning Monday
morning. This system largely becomes vertically stacked heading into
Tuesday, ceasing substantial advections to further support the
cyclone. The longwave trough and main jet max will continue to move
east through the time period, eventually developing another cyclone
off of the New England coast on Tuesday as the former decays.

Forecast/Details: Precipitation is expected to be ongoing across the
majority of the forecast area Monday morning. Portions of eastern
upper that see temperatures at or below freezing Monday morning have
the potential to see some sleet/freezing rain heading into late
morning before temperatures begin to warm up a few degrees ahead of
an approaching cold front from the west. Forecast soundings show a
mid-level warm nose that will initially melt any precip falling
through the layer before reaching the ground, along with a
potentially sub-zero near-surface layer that could support
sleet/freezing rain for a short window in the AM hours. Regardless,
the majority of precipitation across the region Monday morning will
be rain as most will see temps in the mid to upper 30s during the
day.

Heading into the afternoon, temperatures begin to drop from west to
east as an associated cold front sweeps across northern Michigan.
Cold air advection combined with synoptic lift will help erode the
previously mentioned warm nose, creating a profile that is sub-zero
throughout that supports a transition to snow. Soundings display
ample moisture across the region with saturated DGZs within layers
where forcing for ascent is expected through Monday night heading
into Tuesday morning. Although the system largely stalls overhead
for the middle of the period, multiple embedded shortwaves/speed
maxima could rotate down from the upper-level low and create
localized support for precipitation. Southwest near-surface winds
late Monday night will support lake enhanced snowfall, with some
totals in Benzie and Manistee counties potentially exceeding 4".
After the cold front passes and the cyclone departs to the east,
west/northwest winds across the region will create a small
timeframe for lake enhanced/lake effect snow through Tuesday night
across parts of northern Michigan as lingering moisture stays in
the region through the period.

Otherwise, high temperatures on Tuesday are expected to be in the
upper 20s to low 30s across the area after the frontal passage the
previous day. Overcast conditions are expected, along with gusty
conditions on Monday as the system tracks through the forecast area.
Falling snow combined with stronger winds could create hazardous
travel conditions after dark Monday night.

High Impact Weather: Minimal...Potential ongoing lake effect snow
Wednesday morning.

Ongoing lake effect snow is possible across west/northwest flow
belts Wednesday morning as sufficient moisture is expected to linger
into the forecast period. In the upper levels, troughing makes its
way off of the Atlantic coast as more amplified troughing progresses
across the central CONUS heading into the weekend. A relatively weak
shortwave could help support a clipper system to move across the
US/Canada border during that same timeframe. After high temps near
freezing on Wednesday, southerly low-level flow helps bump
temperatures into the upper 30s late this upcoming week. This would
be between 5-10 degrees warmer than average for most across northern
Michigan. After Wednesday, the next main chance for precipitation is
expected to be on Friday with a possible system forming to our south
and west and moving across the Great Lakes.

Extended period of MVFR to IFR conditions expected to spread
across the taf sites as low pressure and surge of deep moisture
spread overhead. Intense low level jet will bring wind shear to
all sites later tonight through the mornign hours. Periods of
heavier rain and areas of fog will result in reduced visibilities.

Deep low pressure in the Upper Midwest will slide into the region
today through Tuesday morning, with a level of uncertainty on the
exact placement of the sfc low pressure. This will lead to
uncertainty on the direction and strength of winds past Monday
morning. There is however, enough confidence ahead of this system,
to upgrade many nearshore waters to gale warning today into Monday
morning. There will likely be a need for additional headlines after
this system departs in the Tuesday to Wednesday timeframe.
