.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

...Gusty winds to add chill to much cooler temperatures...

High impact weather potential: Gusty winds to bring the potential
for gales and lakeshore flooding. Also some concern for isolated
waterspouts on Lake Michigan tonight.

Pattern synopsis/forecast: Intense, but rapidly occluding, low
pressure nearly stalled over the far northwest reaches of Minnesota
at this early hour. Classic deformation axis on its backside
bringing blizzard conditions to parts of North Dakota, while fully
mature warm conveyor belt to its east brought periods of showers
into our area through the overnight. Well developed mid level dry
slot punching rapidly northeast along its southern periphery just
behind attendant cold front, ending the showers as it marches into
our area in the process. Strong pressure gradient resulting in the
continuation of gusty winds, with those winds having swung around to
the southwest as the front has exited off to our east. Strong cold
air advection now well underway, with temperatures dropping into the
30s and 40s.

Steadily weakening low pressure moves very little this morning,
before upstream kicker wave forces a more steady east progression to
the system this afternoon and overnight. Combination of still
cooling boundary layer conditions enticing a growing lake response
and passing waves/attendant moisture plumes will bring periodic
shower activity into northern Michigan through tonight. Combine the
above with gusty southwest winds, and no doubt just a classic
northern Michigan fall weather event.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Gusty winds resulting in
lakeshore flooding concerns/possible gales, spatial/temporal
resolution of additional lake enhanced shower activity, and
potential for a few waterspouts on Lake Michigan.

Details: Mid level dry slot expected to continue to swing across the
region early this morning, ending the widespread showers in the
process. Return of somewhat deeper moisture will be a quick one, as
evident by large area of low and mid level clouds rotating across
Wisconsin into Lake Michigan. Combination of this moisture and an
increasingly favorable over-water thermal regime with H8
temperatures in the negative lower and middle single digits should
result in at least some lake response in favored southwest flow
areas across the Tip of the Mitt into eastern upper Michigan today.
However, definitely not looking at any real organized lake shower
activity with maintenance of a relatively low inversion and a noted
inverted-V signature (dry low level air) in guidance derived
soundings. Expect dry conditions under partly sunny skies to prevail
elsewhere. Definitely going to be much cooler than the last few
days, with gusty southwest winds (gusts of 25 to 35 mph, highest
near Lake Michigan) adding considerable more chill to actual
temperatures only recovering into the middle and upper 40s.

Expect southwest flow lake enhanced showers to become much more
organized heading through this evening with arrival of deeper
moisture and increased forcing via approach of main shortwave
trough. Shower threat expands inland with better mid level forcing
overnight, but still expect most numerous showers to target areas of
eastern upper and northwest lower Michigan where lake support will
be greatest. Wet bulb zero heights largely at or above 2kft and low
level modification from the warm lake waters should keep
precipitation of the liquid variety. Chilly for sure however, with
damp conditions and continued gusty southwest winds making lows
ranging from the middle 30s to lower 40s feel considerably colder.

.SHORT TERM...(Sunday through Monday)

...Lake Effect Rain into Monday Morning, Waterspouts?...

High Impact Weather Potential...Waterspouts on the Great Lakes,
which looks like the best chance is on Lake Michigan.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...The core of the 500 mb low moves into
Lake Superior 12z/Sun, and continues to move NE towards James Bay.
The coldest air looks to remain on the backside of the low. As the
air moves into the bottom of the trough, and across Lake Michigan,
it slowly warms from the -6C temperatures to around -4C. The sfc
temperatures with the -4C temperatures should keep the p-type rain
through the day. The night is a bit more problematic, and will
discuss that more in the next section, but there is a chance for a
mix in the inland highlands of N Lower and in E Upper.

Monday, the lake effect rain continues through at least the morning,
until the warm front begins to move north, and the 850 mb
temperatures begin to warm. The 500 mb heights are beginning to
build and the mid level moisture looks to be lifting out as well.

Sunday into Monday morning, there is a chance for waterspouts as
well, which is the high impact potential as the temperatures and the
winds are favorable for some.

Primary Forecast Concerns...The rain/snow mix is one concern as the
soundings show that overnight the positive energy is pretty low as
to support snow flakes to reach the ground. The models have now been
consistent with the 850 mb temperatures around -5c air getting into
the region. Local studies have shown that the inland areas (like
Gaylord/Grayling/Mio) can have some mixes when the 850 mb
temperatures is -6c or colder (it takes -10c to mix near the Lake
Michigan shore) this time of year. When the sfc temperatures fall to
around 37F (about +2C) overnight, the mix will be possible. So will
probably see some flakes around Sunday night into Monday morning. If
things come in a little colder, then the flake potential will be
greater. However, barring some convectively driven band, think that
it is unlikely that there would be any accumulation.

Waterspouts over Lake Michigan is the other concern as the delta T
is around 20c Sunday into Monday morning with cloud depths of 5000-
10000feet. Winds are expected to remain 20-30 kts at 850 mb, so that
the chance for waterspouts will be pretty decent, especially during
Sunday afternoon and evening. Overnight, the moisture in the mid
levels begin to thin out, and would expect that the cloud depth will
lower, which would lead to the chances of waterspouts falling as
well.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Friday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.

Extended (Tuesday through Friday)...Before coming in tonight, based
on many sources, it was sounding like we were going to be heading
into a cool period. However, the models have been moderating pretty
quickly over the last day and a half, with the extended portions of
the models pointing to at or above normal temperatures by the end of
the next week. This trend starts on Tuesday, as what had looked like
a reinforcing shot of colder air that would stay with us, will now
move through the Upper Great Lakes bringing more rain, before
lifting out Wednesday morning. The 500 mb trough associated with
this system pushes east quickly, and the heights rise quickly by
Thursday morning, and continue into Saturday, for the most part.
There looks like another storm system Friday into Saturday, but it
too looks to push more warm air north.

Strong cold front is moving out across Lake Huron. Post-frontal
rain will impact PLN/APN for several more hours yet. However,
vsbys and cigs are both tending to improve. A mix of MVFR to VFR
conditions is expected. APN eventually will become VFR, and the
Lake MI TAF sites more MVFR thanks to lake effect clouds and rain
showers in the chilly post-frontal air.

Winds will be wsw and gusty, with the gustiness increasing Sat
afternoon/evening. LLWS this evening.

Plethora of marine concerns as deep lower pressure slowly weakens as
it moves east into the northern Lakes tonight and Sunday. Strong
pressure gradient and a very unstable over-water environment will
continue to result in gusty southwest winds this weekend. Widespread
small craft advisory conditions expected across all nearshore
waters, with at least a few gale gusts on northern Lake Michigan,
especially this afternoon and evening. Those unstable conditions and
a deepening boundary layer may result in isolated waterspouts on
northern Lake Michigan tonight into Sunday as well. Small craft
advisory producing conditions may continue across at least some
nearshore waters right through Sunday night and Monday. Periods of
lake enhanced showers through the weekend.

Lake Huron, as a strong storm system pushes across the area. The
stronger winds will also increase the threat for lakeshore
flooding in coastal areas.

Lakeshore flooding may continue to be an issue for several areas
along the northwest lower Michigan shoreline Saturday into
Sunday.

Isolated waterspouts are possible over northern Lake Michigan
Saturday night into Sunday night.
