...Colder Air Returns Tonight...

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal. Minor drizzle/freezing
drizzle/snow showers through Sunday morning.

Afternoon surface analysis reveals weakening low pressure now
moving through eastern upper Michigan. Trailing cold front snakes
back through central upper Michigan and into northern Wisconsin
with low cloud cover continuing to expand southward through the
U.P. and now just getting into northern Lake Michigan. Lower
Michigan remains within the warm sector with a few more hours left
of clear to partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures.

Tonight: Surface low will continue to advance eastward through
the North Channel and Georgian Bay through early evening before
getting absorbed into stronger coastal storm system moving up
along the New England coast. Trailing cold front slides down
through northern Michigan through the evening hours dragging low
stratus back into the region and knocking temperatures back down
through the 20s by Sunday morning. Very little occurring with the
front itself. But increasingly cold temperatures will eventually
kick off some very minor lake induced drizzle/freezing drizzle/snow
showers in eastern upper Michigan and parts of northern lower
Michigan.

Sunday: There may be some very light lingering lake effect early
in the day. However, strong Canadian high pressure and wedge of
fairly dry air builds down into the northern Great Lakes region
through the course of the day, while low level mean flow veers
northerly...even northeasterly in time. This setup usually favors
scouring out low cloud cover as we go through the day, particularly
across the northern and eastern parts of the CWA. Otherwise, a
cooler day regardless with highs in the middle 20s to around 30,
but actually still around or just a touch above normal for early
January.

.SHORT TERM...(Sunday night through Monday night)

High Impact Weather Potential: High

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges: Wintry mix leading to slick
travel and accumulating snow.

With winds continuing to veer through the evening and overnight,
pops were increased slightly on the Huron side to account for
possible light lake effect as winds become more easterly. As winds
further veer out of the south and southwest, higher thetaE air
pushes in overnight and into Monday morning. By 09z the precip
shield out ahead of the warm front will moving into areas near
Manistee and Ludington. Precipitation will start as all snow, and
will make the trek northeastward through the morning. Temperatures
are slow to climb above the freezing mark for areas east of 131.
Many areas in northern lower will change over to some sort of mixed
precip by 18z. The NAM has much of the lower peninsula changing over
to drizzle as the column dries out between 21z and 00z with the
arrival of the dry slot. However, the GFS and Euro change over to
straight rain before drying out late Monday night. Decided the NAM
was too early with the drying, and went with a blend of the latter
two, which has more of a rain/snow mix before transitioning over to
plain rain for a few hours Monday evening and night. One question
remaining is whether the surface low will continue to deepen as it
passes over the Straits, allowing for continued support for precip
as warmer and warmer air pushes in during the afternoon and evening.
Another uncertainty is when exactly the dry slot moves in, and how
much of a toll it takes before many areas change over to straight
rain.

Overall the snow will be the wet heavy variety, making travel
difficult Monday morning through late Monday night. Accumulation
totals should range from an inch in our southern counties to about 5
inches near the Straits. Portions of Eastern Upper will receive much
more than this as they stay snow for a longer period. Areas near the
SOO and eastern portions of both counties could receive 7 to 9
inches. Areas of freezing rain spread from the southwest to the
northeast through the day. Ice accumulations will remain at a tenth
of an inch or below. Highs on Monday will reach into the mid and
upper 30s for most, with southwest counties possibly getting into
the low 40s. Overnight lows Monday night will dip below freezing in
Eastern Upper and the interior highlands of northern lower.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Saturday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Scattered lake effect snow showers
expected Tuesday night into Wednesday night, and snow from a clipper
system is possible around Friday.

A short wave will dive across the Great Lakes region on Tuesday into
a progressive and deepening eastern North American upper-level trof.
This feature will should bring a quick shot of light snow to much of
the area, with any accumulation generally under an inch. Some
guidance has enough of a surface-based warm layer during the day
that a mix with or changeover to rain is possible at times. Tuesday
will also be the last day with well above normal high temperatures
for a while, with readings topping out well into the 30s across
parts of northern Lower MI.

Increasingly cold air will spill into the region behind Tuesday's
system, with below normal highs in the teens and lower 20s likely
for Thursday. Lake effect snow showers are expected downwind of Lake
Superior and Lake Michigan as the colder air spills in. The best
chances of appreciable snowfall will occur Tuesday night into
Wednesday despite the arrival of the coldest air on Thursday. By
that time, model sounding inversion heights have lowered
considerably and low-level flow is beginning to turn anticyclonic
ahead of Friday's clipper. It's too soon to say if this clipper will
be a significant snow producer, but it will need to be watched.
Heights begin to rise across the Great Lakes in the wake of Friday's
clipper. This should result in temperatures climbing back above
normal for the weekend.

Solid VFR conditions once again across northern lower Michigan,
save for a sliver of MVFR clouds migrating through the tip of the
mitt and impacting PLN. Cold front will slide down through the
region later this afternoon and evening and bring a return of MVFR
cloud cover back to the region that will persist through much of

Cold front will sag down through the region tonight with winds
veering northwesterly and becoming gusty, leading to small craft
advisory conditions through early Sunday morning. A brief lull
again on Sunday. But a strong storm system will pivot up through
the region late Sunday night through Monday and likely produce
gale force wind gusts in most areas. Gale warnings for our
nearshore areas will likely be hoisted with the afternoon
forecast.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday.

Heavy wet snow is expected to overspread the area late Sunday
night through Monday. Heaviest snow accumulations will be in
eastern upper and the tip of the Mitt. The snow will mix with or
change over to rain or freezing rain during the day Monday.
Icing accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch are possible.
Winds will briefly gust to near 30 early Monday
afternoon...leading to possible isolated power outages. Travel
will likely be hazardous with slick ice covered roads.

Gale force wind gusts are possible on the Great Lakes on Monday.
