bounded by two areas of low pressure. The greatest moisture and
instability and associated showers and thunderstorms were along and
south of this frontal zone, and ahead of a developing cold front on
the front range of the Rockies, associated with the Plains sfc low.
Most all of the rains from last night have ended, but widespread
stratus blanketed nrn Michigan, leaving things rather damp and
dreary. The dry air from the sfc high was seen sinking southward
and toward Lake Superior, with clearing being noted punching into
the St. Mary's over the last few satellite images. Temperatures
were in the 50s and lower 60s.

There's going to be a relatively brief period of time with quieter
weather, for today into this evening. The aforementioned sfc high
pressure and deeper, drier air drop into eastern upper through
daybreak, then gradually clears out skies further south with time.
Sunny skies are eventually expected across eastern upper this
morning and even into far nrn lower Michigan later today. High
temperatures today will be in the mid 60s to lower 70s. In the
meantime, the Plains sfc low lifts into the Upper Midwest through
tonight and occludes, and will lift the frontal zone northward as
a warm front into nrn Michigan, with the associated cold front
draped southward through the western Great Lakes by daybreak.
While the strongest forcing will be off to our north and west with
the main upper/sfc lows, we will get in on some DPVA and the low
level convergence with the front, as well as the srn extent of the
better theta-e advection and upper divergence of an 80+kt jet
aloft. This will result in the arrival of the next round of
convection, into at least the western CWA. Lapse rates leave much
to be desired, resulting in rather limited MUCAPE, which may be on
the order of several hundred j/kg. There's most likely going to
be some embedded thunder arriving with the showers, but nothing
severe is anticipated right now. Winds will really be ramping up
tonight, more so just above the sfc. These strong winds, combined
with thickening cloud cover, will result in lows tonight not
getting much lower than 10 degrees or so from the high
temperatures. Readings will be in the middle 50 to lower 60s.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Saturday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Chance of thunderstorms Friday,
including an isolated storm capable of producing gusty winds? Gale
force wind gusts Friday as well.

Pattern synopsis/forecast: Vertically stacked low pressure sitting
across northern Minnesota at the start of the period Friday morning
will be the primary focus through the short term forecast period.
The system's warm front is expected to rapidly race across the
forecast area late tonight into early Friday morning before being
followed rather quickly by a fairly formidable cold front. As a
result, showers and storms are expected to be the rule - most
numerous Friday morning through the midday hours before a notable
drying trend arrives from west to east Friday afternoon through
Friday evening.

Upper-level flow becomes more zonal across the Great Lakes region
Friday night through Saturday with surface high pressure building
across the Ohio Valley region. Northern Michigan is expected to be
positioned on the northern fringe of high pressure with little in
the way of sensible weather to start the upcoming weekend, although
another weak system looms for Saturday night into Sunday.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: PoPs, thunder/severe wx
chances early Friday.

By the start of the forecast period Friday morning, expecting
showers and embedded scattered thunderstorms to be ongoing across
parts of the forecast area...primarily west of I-75 across northern
lower Michigan (most numerous near and west of the Grand Traverse
Bay region). Expecting this area of/line of showers and storms to
expand in coverage while rolling northeastward across the remainder
of northern lower and eastern upper MI through the morning hours
into midday/early afternoon before a notable drying trend is
expected post FROPA. This evident by PWs progged at 1.75+ inches
ahead of the cold front, but rather quickly falling sub 0.75 inches
by Friday evening.

With respect to severe weather chances Friday, while there's
certainly some stronger winds both at the surface (wind gusts as
high as 30-35 mph) and aloft with this system (effective bulk shear
values in the 30-40 kt range), overall instability is lackluster.
Suppose it's not out of the realm of possibilities that an isolated
storm produces some gusty winds, but SPC has excluded us from severe
weather in their latest Day 2 outlook, which seems fine for now.

Generally quiet sensible weather is expected Friday night through
much of Saturday as affects from high pressure centered to our south
are felt locally. Should be a rather cool, breezy and variable
cloudy day Saturday with westerly wind gusts as high as 20-25 mph
making the mid-upper 60s high temps feel a touch cooler than that.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal.

Overall large scale flow remains fairly zonal through the upcoming
weekend before becoming more amplified as we head into the early-
middle portions of next week. Could be a few isentropically driven
showers around Saturday night into Sunday as warm air begins to
build back into the region, although nothing too impactful or
widespread as it looks now. Latest trends continue to suggest rather
amplified ridging building back into the country's midsection
Tuesday through at least Thursday next week (e.g. rather impressive
585-588+ dM 500 mb heights over the northern Great Lakes). Combined
with expansive surface high pressure roaming the eastern third of
the CONUS should yield rather warm and mainly precipitation-free
conditions with high temperatures climbing back into the upper 70s
and low 80s for much of the forecast area...some 10-15 degrees above
the mid-upper 60 degree normal mid-September highs.

Some showers linger south of PLN, north of a stalled front well
downstate. Heavier showers/storms are confined to downstate areas.
MVFR to IFR cigs are widespread, and will persist into Thursday.
Cigs will improve to VFR early to mid afternoon. Better chances
for showers/storms will work into the region late Thursday night,
just beyond the period of this TAF.

Ne to e winds, gusty on Thursday and Thursday evening. LLWS may
develop Thu night, if surface winds diminish more than progged.

A relatively brief break in the rainfall is on tap for today into
this evening, before a stationary front to our south lifts back
north late tonight into Friday. This front is tied to sfc low
pressure in the Plains, that will lift into Ontario Friday. More
showers and potential thunderstorms are a very good bet, before
things quiet down for Friday night and Saturday.

Winds: There may be a slight slow down in the easterly winds today,
but speeds ramp up quickly tonight and Friday, turning out of the SE
then SW over this time, with solid advisories everywhere for sure,
with gales looking likely for all but Point Betsie to Sleeping Bear
Point. It stays windy/gusty Friday night into Saturday, as winds
slide around from SW to west. Gale Warnings will be issued.

There is a chance for thunderstorms across all of northern
Michigan late tonight. Severe storms are not expected. But a few
stronger storms may produce gusty winds.

Gale force winds are expected tonight on most all nearshore waters
surrounding northern Michigan. Please see the latest nearshore
forecast for further details.

There is a high swim risk due to rip currents and high waves today
and tonight for the Lake Huron beaches of northeast lower Michigan
today and tonight, and also for the Lake Huron Beaches of
southeast Chippewa and Mackinac counties in eastern upper Michigan
tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible across northern Michigan
Friday. Severe weather is not expected, although any stronger storms
may produce gusty winds.

Gale force wind gusts are expected Friday on portions of the Lake
