.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

High impact weather: A little accumulating snow and possible
freezing rain, starting late tonight for the start of the much
discussed storm.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Pretty quiet out there early this morning, as a sfc trough with
drier air behind it, continues to press SW through nrn lower
Michigan. The drier air was associated with strong high pressure
centered over Hudson Bay, and has has become deep enough to result
in a distinct clearing line, which was pressing through far srn
Ontario and into the nrn portions of Lakes Superior and Huron. Most
all of the light rain/snow shower activity with this trough has
ended, and we are just left with clouds over much of nrn Michigan.
Attention now turns to the developing upstream low pressure in the
lee of the Rockies/working into the central Plains. This storm
system wasn't working with much moisture attm, as it is untapped
from the Gulf of Mexico. Forcing however was decently strong, with a
50kt jet lifting air up and over a warm front extending east of the
low, and divergence aloft on the nose of a 110+kt upper jet rounding
the base of sharp upper troughing in the Rockies. This has resulted
in a narrow corridor of rain and some thunderstorms stretching from
WY/SD all the way to nrn IL.

Most of the next 24hrs will be quiet for nrn Michigan. The sfc
trough and dry air will gradually sink south, and skies will be
clearing across eastern upper, far nrn/NE lower Michigan through the
day. The GTV Bay region over to HTL/Gladwin county doesn't look to
be so fortunate, as lower clouds and incoming higher level clouds
will keep skies mostly cloudy.

The higher clouds will continue to spread from south to north and
thicken over all of nrn Michigan through tonight. The low pressure
deepens further as it settles right into the heart of the country.
While all of the very strong forcing will be well west of us, we
will start getting at some ejected shortwave energy, increased WAA,
and possible upper divergence in a double jet structure. This will
allow for a chance for light snow to break out for the GTV Bay
region over toward Tawas. GFS/RUC suggest no chance for freezing
rain by daybreak, but the aggressive NAM rams that above freezing
layer aloft into portions of the M-55 corridor, where sfc
temperatures are at or below freezing. Believe those chances are
small. Snowfall amounts expected to be no more than a half inch at
most by daybreak.

Highs today will be in the upper 30s to lower half of the 40s. Lows
tonight in the mid 20s in eastern upper, to the upper 20s and lower
30s south.

.SHORT TERM...(Thursday through Friday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Accumulating snow is possible early,
then a wintry mix through Thursday and into Thursday night with
significant icing possible.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Thursday morning, the precipitation type
looks to start out as snow as the warm front moves to the north.
Amounts look light (1-3") at this point. By Thursday afternoon, the
snow should change to rain, however, it looks like with the
significant undercutting of cold air from the Hudson Bay High, that
the sfc temperatures remain below freezing through most of the day.
As the sfc low moves closer to the Upper Great Lakes, the warm air
does take over at the sfc, slowly pushing the sfc temperatures over
freezing by 07z, even in E Upper. Friday, the rain continues into
the morning, and the cold front/occluded front moves through, and
the cold air begins to move into the region this will lead to the
sfc temperatures to slowly fall through the day, and the rain will
mix with and then change to snow by 12z/Sat.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Main concerns is the icing issues of the
forecast. Snow amounts are expected to be light(1-3") with the
initial warm advection. however, things turn to freezing rain once
the warm advection aloft runs into the undercutting cold air from
the Hudson Bay High. Several days ago, this didn't look like an
issue, but over the last few days, the sfc high and sfc low with
this system have strengthened for the steady NE to ENE flow that
continues the below freezing air into the NE Lower and E Upper.
Yesterday, the ice looked to be below warning criteria, then a
portion of the forecast area, look to be above warning criteria
(0.25" of ice) with a good portion in advisory. Numbers have come
down a bit, so that it looks like it would be mainly advisory
amounts. So concern will be for the speed of the warm air aloft and
the cold undercutting, to produce ice early and then the change over
to all rain Thursday night. There are still some uncertainty with
the speed and the ice amounts overnight.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal

Extended (Saturday through Tuesday)...It looks like by Saturday
morning that we should be back to all snow across the forecast area.
High pressure then begins to move into the region and looks to keep
things dry through Saturday night. The models have been all over the
place with this system for Sunday as the ECMWF has been chasing the
GFS solution and now it looks like the system lift up over the
state, and brings rain, that mixes with and changes to snow
overnight. Monday, high pressure builds into the region and dries
things out, until Tuesday afternoon when a fast moving system moves
through Michigan and brings rain, and possibly a mix of rain and
snow overnight.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)

MVFR ceilings and visibilities, wintry mix of precipitation and gusty
winds expected during the day Thursday. VFR conditions expected
through this evening and most of the overnight hours before the
precipitation arrives. A cold front with more precipitation is
expected to move through thursday night.

Gale force winds expected Thursday and Friday. Strong storm moving
out of the Plains will help winds increase this evening out of an
easterly direction, becoming full gales early Thursday morning. By
Friday winds will diminish some and shift to a southerly
direction but once again increase later Friday before a cold front
moves through Friday night.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.

A wintry mix of weather will impact northern Michigan for late
tonight through Thursday night. Light accumulations of snow are
expected, followed by a period of freezing rain. The most
significant ice accumulations are expected in eastern upper and
far northern lower Michigan. Gusty easterly winds will also occur.
See ongoing winter storm watches for details.

There is also a chance for thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon
and evening in northern lower Michigan. Severe storms are not
expected.
