Area forecast discussion, Nov 30, 12:25 AM EST, 3 hours 12 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Albany NY
1225 AM EST Sat Nov 30 2019

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build in with cold and dry conditions
tonight into Saturday. A major winter storm potentially impacts the
region for the second half of the weekend. This storm will bring a
plowable snow to the region Sunday through Monday and a wintry mix
is also possible Sunday night south of Interstate 90.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 12 AM EST, areas of low clouds have persisted and/or
redeveloped for areas within and especially just east of the
Hudson River into portions of SW VT/NW MA. Additional low
clouds have spread across the SW Adirondacks, western Mohawk
Valley extending south into the eastern Catskills. Persistence
and a strong subsidence inversion noted on the 00Z/30 ALY
sounding suggest these areas of clouds may persist much of the
night, with perhaps some erosion toward sunrise.

Otherwise, a chilly night is expected where temperatures will
fall into the mid teens and lower 20s. The winds will become
light and variable.

Saturday should feature a bit more sunshine than today as highs
reach similar values, upper 20s to upper 30s. Sunday night,
clouds begin to increase as a major winter storm approaches the
region. Even with increasing clouds, expect temperatures to drop
off quickly into the single digits to upper teens.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
...A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the entire forecast
area from Sunday through Monday evening...

Our attention now turns to a potentially major winter storm that
is expected to impact our area Sunday morning through Monday
evening. This storm has two pieces to the puzzle. The first of
which is associated with a closed upper low/surface low pressure
system. This piece of upper energy is currently over the four
corners region and will track across the central part of the
country throughout the weekend and become a closed low.
Precipitation will begin spreading into the area throughout
Sunday morning as the upper low tracks just south of the Great
Lakes. Enough cold air will be in place for the precip to fall
as all snow throughout the day. A secondary coastal low is also
expected to form and this should help increase snowfall rates at
times Sunday afternoon. Looks like 3 to 7 inches is possible
through 7 PM Sunday.

Snow will continue Sunday night but should
become light in nature with some some spots even seeing a break
from the precipitation. Locations south of Interstate 90 may
also see snow change to a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain and
snow for a period of time. Up to a tenth of an inch of ice is
possible across Ulster/Dutchess/Litchfield counties through
daybreak Monday. Snowfall totals overnight may be around 2 to 3
inches for most of the area. The second piece to the puzzle
arrives on Monday and is highlighted in the long term
discussion below.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As a large closed off upper level low passes south of the area, a
coastal low pressure storm will only slowly lift northeast from
offshore New Jersey towards southern New England on Monday. Steady
precipitation will redevelop across the entire area on Monday
morning. Colder air will rush into the region aloft and a cold
northerly flow at low levels will keep the boundary layer below
freezing for the entire area as well. Aside from maybe a little bit
of sleet for early Monday morning across the mid Hudson Valley and
NW CT, precip on Monday looks to be all in the form of snow, with
locally moderate to heavy snowfall across the higher terrain of the
Catskills and Berkshires as deformation precip blossoms across the
area. Snowfall will start to taper off on Monday evening, but could
even linger into parts of Monday night depending on how long it
takes the entire system to exit off to the east.

Although these amounts are subject to change based on the exact
storm track and any banding that develops, additional amounts for
Monday and Monday evening will range from a few inches over the
Adirondacks to as much as 10 inches over the Catskills. This will
produce storm total amounts for around a foot for many areas south
of I-90 with up to a foot and a half in the Catskills. This snowfall
will have a large impact on travel across the region, for both
the Monday morning and Monday afternoon/evening commutes.

Behind the departing storm, fairly chilly and cloudy conditions are
expected for much of the remainder of the week, with a large trough
over the Northeast. Daytime temps will mainly be in the 30s with
overnight lows in the teens and 20s. There could be some light snow
showers for Wednesday into Wednesday night with the passage of an
upper level shortwave, mainly for northern areas, where lake
enhancement will aid precipitation. Another Arctic boundary may
bring a few more snow showers (again mainly for northern areas) for
Friday into Friday evening as well, but moisture looks fairly
limited and amounts should be light.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
MVFR stratus deck was just east of the Hudson River and should
remain VFR at KGFL-KALB-KPOU with MVFR conditions at KPSF
through the overnight period. During the daylight hours
Saturday, conditions will become VFR at all TAF sites. Some
occasional higher clouds will filter in through the afternoon
and evening hours.

The winds will be northeast to northwest 7 kts or less overnight.
The winds will be north to northwest at 5-12 kts late Saturday
morning into the afternoon hours.

Outlook...

Saturday Night: No Operational Impact. NO SIG WX.
Sunday: High Operational Impact. Definite SN.
Sunday Night: High Operational Impact. Definite SN.
Monday: High Operational Impact. Definite SN.
Monday Night: Moderate Operational Impact. Chance of SHSN.
Tuesday to Wednesday: No Operational Impact. NO SIG WX.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
Dry conditions will persist through Saturday night. Widespread
precipitation is then expected to arrive during the day Sunday
and continue through Monday. Confidence is growing that
temperatures remain cold enough to support mainly frozen
precipitation but should the expected storm track shift, it is
possible the some areas (mainly the mid-Hudson and NW CT) mix
with rain Sunday night.

observed and forecast river stages and lake elevations, please visit
