.SYNOPSIS...
After a tranquil day today, another round of rain, with perhaps
a rumble of thunder, is expected tonight ahead of a cold front.
Cold and blustery weather returns for later Friday into
Saturday. On Sunday, expect cold temperatures and increasing
clouds.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 100 pm, still a good coverage of low and midlevel stratus
over the area, except for portions of the eastern Catskills
where sunshine has boosted temps into the upper 40s and low 50s.
Elsewhere, temps range from the lower 30s in the higher terrain
of the Adirondacks and Greens to the mid-40s in the Hudson
Valley from Albany south. Expect skies to remain mostly cloudy
for the rest of the day, with high and mid clouds gradually
increasing from the west ahead of the next system. The surface
low is now approaching the Chicago area ahead of an upper trough
which will become sharply negatively tilted and close off as we
head into tonight. This will result in the low deepening as it
as it tracks toward James Bay. Attendant low-level jet in the warm
sector will spread into the area with another surge of moisture
as PWATs increase to 1-1.25 inches throughout the forecast
area. This is +3 to +5 standard deviations per the NAEFS.
Fortunately, this system is a rather quick-hitter, so do not
expect excessive QPF (see hydro discussion below). Expect
showers to spread west to east into the region roughly between
00-03Z. This time, surface temperatures are expected to be warm
enough for the p-type to be plain rain, with the possible
exception of some spots in the southern Greens and possibly the
Connecticut River valley. However, with dewpoints already near
to above freezing, prospects for icing are not high enough to
warrant an advisory at this time. The rainfall will mainly be
driven by isentropic lift, although some showers are also
possible ahead of the approach of a strong cold front late
tonight into Friday morning. Showalter indices go slightly
negative tonight, so we could hear a rumble of thunder or two,
with locally heavy downpours possible. Temps will remain steady
or rise somewhat late tonight, quite mild in the mid-30s to mid-
40s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
A strong cold front Friday morning will drop H850 temps by
around 15-20C in 12 hours. While temperatures may spike early in
the morning immediately behind the front due to mixing, strong
cold advection should drop temperatures in most areas by the
afternoon. A strong post-frontal pressure gradient will set up
with deep mixing encouraged by robust cold air advection.
Forecast soundings suggest average wind speeds in the mixed
layer are 30-40 kt, so we could be looking at wind advisory
criteria. Wind headlines may be needed from Friday afternoon
into Saturday. Most of the precipitation should have moved east
by the time the colder air moves in. However, lake effect
parameters will become increasingly impressive Friday afternoon
into Friday evening, with surface to 850 mb delta-Ts increasing
to 20C and inversion heights up to 2.5 km. Winds in the 0-3 km
layer will be veering with time, so do not expect a band to
remain stationary over a period of time, which should limit
accumulations. Late Friday night into Saturday morning, local
inland extent program supported by CSTAR research is indicating
values near 200 miles, so we could even see a band reach the
Capital District to western New England briefly. Wind chills
Friday night likely will fall into the single digits above and
below zero.

Saturday will be continued blustery and seasonably cold,
although expanding high pressure will result in sunshine and
winds diminishing later in the day. The associated subsidence
should quickly put an end to any lingering lake effect activity.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Rather confluent flow sets up across the northeast corridor as na
elongated surface ridge axis extends from the Upper Plains into the
eastern Conus.  Within this confluence, there remains hints in the
global models of a deep layer moisture funneling through the local
area, but differ with QPF.  For now, and per the previous forecast,
we will continue with slight chance PoPs on Sunday into Sunday
evening with light snow/flurries.

This moisture quickly tracks eastward as a near 1035mb surface high
slides across the Great Lakes into New England through Monday.  This
should provide at least partly sunny skies and seasonable
temperatures for mid-February.  Thereafter, the forecast becomes
increasingly uncertain and impacts for the local area.

Monday night through Wednesday, consensus favors a storm to develop
and track across the center of the nation and toward the Great Lakes
region.  The downstream surface high retreats across northern New
England.  Overall thermal profile and pattern recognition suggest the
chance for light snow at the onset then becoming a wintry mixture
across portions of the region Tuesday into Wednesday.  However,
moisture plume from the ECMWF/GGEM appears rather narrow with bulk
of the higher QPF off the coastline with the GFS further west and
hence a higher impact potential. The GFS-FV3 is more in line with
the operational GFS with a higher impact potential.  So we will
place the higher PoP potential Tuesday night.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
MVFR and IFR ceilings will prevail for the remainder of the TAF
period. We expect rain to arrive between 08/02z and 08/04z from
southwest to northeast with MVFR visibility due to rain and
fog. Introduced LLWS at ALB and GFL around 08/03z with the onset
of rain but held off until 03/09z for PSF and POU. Some thunder
is possible overnight as well but did not have enough
confidence to include VCTS in latest TAFs.

The rain exits early morning with a cold frontal passage leading to
a sharp wind shift from near 170-180 degrees to near 270 degrees
between 08/14z to 08/16z. Wind gusts also increase up to 25kts with
higher wind gusts expected Friday afternoon.

.HYDROLOGY...
Temperatures are expected to warm into the upper 30s to upper
40s today into Friday morning, which will promote continued
snowmelt in some areas. Another storm system will bring rain to
the area tonight. Total QPF from this system is expected to
mainly range from 0.25 to 0.75 inches. The modest snowmelt
coupled with the modest rainfall should result in river rises.
Some rivers are forecast to reach action stage, but as of now,
no flooding is forecast. However, areas where ice jams exist
will need to be monitored, as is is possible that the river
rises could allow the ice to move, resulting in new ice jam
flooding. Locally heavy downpours are possible tonight with
isolated thunderstorms.

By Friday into the weekend, temperatures will be back toward or
below seasonal levels (mainly below freezing) with dry weather
expected, which should once again promote ice formation and
allow river levels to fall.
