A warning means that a winter storm is already occurring or
imminent. This storm could pose a threat to life and property.
Driving may be hazardous. Heavy wet snow will be difficult to

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...The forecast period begins with a dynamic setup
across Southeast Alaska. A front is steadily pushing through the
the panhandle. Behind it, a series of shortwaves will help keep a
chance of active weather through the northern panhandle during
the next few days until a larger and more well defined system
takes aim at the panhandle on Wednesday.

Current satellite imagery shows a well defined cloud and
precipitation gradient associated with a front currently draped
across the central panhandle. This front will continue to slowly
push east throughout the afternoon and evening, before finally
departing SE Alaska late tonight into tomorrow morning. Behind the
front, temperatures will cool down slightly, giving many areas a
chance to experience a rain/snow mix as showers are produced in
the more convectively unstable post-frontal environment, though
most locations outside of the northern panhandle should see
minimal to no accumulation as a result of these. Accumulating snow
is expected to continue over the Haines and Klondike Highways, as
steady moisture advection will continue to encourage the
generation of wintery precipitation, however overall accumulation
amounts should diminish throughout the tonight and tomorrow.

While there is still some disagreement between the models,
indications are good that much of the central and southern
panhandle may get a short break from precip Tuesday and Tuesday
night, with the anticipated shortwaves during this timeframe
expected to impact primarily the northern parts of the panhandle.
In the northern part of the panhandle, current model guidance is
suggesting that Haines and Klondike, along with the highways in
that area, may see some significant snow accumulation during the
evening hours on Tuesday, and should conditions continue to look
favorable, it is possible that a winter storm watch may need to be
issued for these areas in the future. Am holding off for the time
being until more model consensus exists however. For the rest of
the panhandle, any break will be short-lived as another
substantial system will be approaching the region from the west,
bringing with it another front for Wednesday.

Wednesday afternoon and evening will see the arrival of this next
major front in the panhandle. Most of the central and southern
panhandle will see primarily rain out of this system, with snow
being mostly confined to higher elevations. Higher winds to
currently appear likely in both the coastal and inner waters,
some of which could reach gale strength.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Monday night/...Models have
converged significantly on a high end gale force front that will
affect the eastern Gulf and Southeast Alaska Wednesday evening and
overnight. Thus, confidence in this aspect of the forecast is much
better tonight than it was last night. Minor changes to the wind
field included a slight increase over the coastal marine zones,
and the addition of gales for both Cross Sound and Clarence
Strait. Minor changes to the PoP field as well. QPF unchanged, but
if model agreement is still good tomorrow, expect a significant
increase in the forecast tomorrow afternoon. This represents the
greatest point of concern in the forecast for Wednesday night as
these grids are handed off to the short term forecasters.

The next forecast challenge involves the following front for
Friday/Friday night. Good model agreement on this being another
high end gale to marginal storm force front with very large QPF
values. That is where model agreement ends. On Friday afternoon,
when this system becomes a factor for Southeast Alaska, models are
placing it anywhere from well south of Kodiak to already making
landfall near Sitka. Additional complication is that the
orientation of the front and associated wind field is dramatically
different amongst the models. Opted not to make any changes to
the existing Friday/Friday night forecast in the hope that models
will converge with better agreement by Monday evening. While the
resultant wind field is a big question mark right now. Models are
is good agreement that, when this second front arrives, it too
will feature A LOT of precipitation. P-type and timing for any
give SEAK location still uncertain at this time.
