The weather front with the strong gusty winds is leaving the 
southern panhandle overnight. So the High Wind Warning will be 
allowed to expire at 1 AM AKDT. A few gusty winds will continue 
and slowly diminish into early Thursday morning.

The peak wind at Salmon Landing Marine Exchange sensor was a gust
to 69 kt at 940 pm. Ketchikan Harbor Marine Exchange sensor 
gusted to 60 mph near midnight.

.SHORT TERM...Current satellite imagery and radar show showers
continuing to move onshore Tuesday afternoon. The showers will
begin to diminish this evening from west to east as a weak ridge
quickly moves across the area Tuesday night. This will provide a
brief reprieve from precipitation Wednesday morning before the
next impactful front approaches the panhandle.

There are two main concerns associated with the storm force front
as it impacts southeast Alaska Wednesday afternoon through
Thursday morning. First, very strong southeasterly winds ahead of
the front as it lifts across the eastern gulf from the southwest.
Storm force winds are expected to develop in the the NE gulf coast
outer waters tomorrow afternoon. As the front approaches the
panhandle, expect strong winds to increase along the outer coast
with possible gusts up to 60 mph across Prince of Wales Island and
the southern inner channel areas near Ketchikan tomorrow night. We
are continuing a High Wind Watch for these areas as we do expect
frequent gusts to around 55 mph, but model timing is still an
issue and confidence not as strong in 60 mph or higher gusts.
Appears to be a fast moving front which may enhance wind speeds
briefly. The NAM continues to be the faster of the models by
approximately 3 hours.

The second impact will be the possibility of warning criteria
snowfall across the northern panhandle inner channels Wednesday
night through Thursday morning. As the front lifts NE towards the
panhandle, anticipate wind direction in the northern areas should
switch to a northerly direction, which would advect in some colder
air. Timing, cloud cover and other factors though may keep the
precipitation starting out as rain, before becoming more of a mix
of rain and snow Wednesday night as temperatures cool slightly.
We are still thinking 4 to 6 inches of snow is possible near
Juneau, Haines and Skagway, as well as the Haines and Klondike
Highways. Also considering the possibility of snow showers
developing as colder air is advected in behind the front. The
Winter Storm Watch remains for these areas late Wednesday
afternoon through Thursday morning.

Overall forecast confidence is above average with a strong front
effecting the panhandle, but average in the details of the impacts
of this system.

.LONG TERM.../ Thursday to Tuesday / as of 10 pm Monday. Made a
few minor changes to the forecast package for Thursday and Friday
across the panhandle, that may ripple the forecast slightly as we
see if the changes will continue to hold.

Thursday continues to be the wrap up day as the stronger front
sweeps through the panhandle on Wednesday night. As the front
approaches the outer coastline again, believe that there could be
the potential for a slight chance of thunderstorms along the
coast.

Friday to Saturday the model solutions are suggesting another
frontal band to impact the southeast panhandle. The solutions are
a little better timed however positions differences are slowing
down a more accurate forecast time for when it will impact the
area.

The other hiccup in the mix, is that the temperatures got a cool
down from late Wednesday to Saturday morning as they were running
a little warm compared to model consensus. Daytime highs took the
biggest hit in the change with some in the northern regions
lowering as much as 5 to 7 degrees. Overnight lows went down 1 to
3 depending on locations. This will bring snow and or a mix back
into play for much of Southeast Alaska. Mainly minor
accumulations, although the Saturday morning time frame could be
interesting as another warm moist front is headed into the area
and the northern portions of the panhandle will have north to
northeast winds from the interior, so could get a few inches
before a change over occurs.

The Saturday system looks to be bringing in another push of warm
air so left the weekend temperatures a little warmer than the
Thursday to Friday time frames. The pops for the weekend will
remain in the chance to likely levels as the pattern should stay
on the wetter side through much of next week. The long range forecast
confidence is average.
